Katatonia Launches Beer Glass Line

Update: Looks like this line is making the rounds, as Opeth and Devin Townsend are now selling the same drinkware with their own logos.

Joining the game of expanding merch beyond t-shirts and patches, Katatonia is now selling tall beer glasses, whiskey glasses, and shot glasses etched with the band's logo and the latest album title. Check out the full lineup right here (and now you can reenact the Opeth/Katatonia album listening/wine drinking sessions!)

"...And Justice For Art" Series Tackles Katatonia

In the latest part of the "...And Justice For Art" serial on Pure Grain Audio, writer Ramon Martos-Garcia explores the highly charged artwork of the band Katatonia. Now on its ninth album, guitarist Anders Nystrom from the Swedish band explains the symbolism behind "Dead End Kings" and the credo of the artistry of Katatonia: "To follow your own vision without compromising and conforming to other people’s demands and expectations would make you a king in what people would just define as a dead end." Check out the wealth of insight into the band's album covers, most of which have been designed by American Travis Smith since 1999, by heading over to this location.

Anders Nystrom Talks Bloodbath, Canned Opeth Tour

MetalInsider.net had the chance to interview guitarist Anders Nystrom (Katatonia, Bloodbath) in New York City last weekend, and during the chat Anders revealed that Katatonia’s originally planned fall tour with Opeth has been canned, and also confirmed that Bloodbath has found a replacement for Mikael Akerfeldt in Bloodbath. Excerpts from the interview follow.

Metal Insider: Speaking about touring, guitarist Fredrik Akesson let it slip this past summer that Opeth and Katatonia would be touring North America again later this year. Is that still happening?

That was supposed to happen, but Mikael [Akerfeldt, Opeth frontman] actually pulled the plug on that at the last minute. It’s very unfortunate because we have two more days on this tour now. In three days, we were supposed to start that tour, so it’s a bummer really. We were ready to do that.

Metal Insider: Did he give a reason for canning the tour?

I think honestly, Mikael’s burnt. He’s just been touring nonstop, constantly. I think he had to choose his priorities because they’re going out in Europe in a month as well. So that would mean they probably wouldn’t have a gap at all and they decided to pull on this tour, which is unfortunate for us. But things like that happen, it’s out of our control.

Metal Insider On the plus side, at least you guys did get to tour together. It brought a lot of exposure for the band, I’m sure. I remember when we were speaking you were like, “that would be the perfect tour for us” and one year later… More...

Sunday Old School: Katatonia

Catatonia are one the biggest successes in the history of Welsh pop rock, having forever entered the annals of British music with such classics as "Road Rage" and "Mulder and Scully." No, sorry, I got mixed up. This week, Sunday Old School will not be looking at a female fronted pop rock group, but rather a band with a similar name who created some of the darkest and most atmospheric music of their time, and continue to push boundaries, Katatonia. Katatonia were formed in the Swedish capital city of Stockholm in 1991 by guitarist Anders Nyström and singing drummer Jonas Renkse, and soon recruited keyboardist and singer, Dan Swanö, which would be released in 1992 as an EP entitled, "Jhva Elohim Meth... The Revival." They followed this with the release of their first full length album, "Dance of December Souls" the next year, which featured a new member in bassist Guillaume Le Huche, but saw Swanö appear only as a guest musician. These early releases proved to be landmark entries into the emerging hybrid of death and doom metal, a crossover also launched by such British bands as Anathema and My Dying Bride, and they followed this direction for their next release, a four track EP named, "For Funerals to Come" in 1994, which would prove to be the last recording with Le Huche, who left the band soon afterwards. His departure was quite a blow for the band, and they took over a year to find a new lineup they were satisfied with.

Katatonia eventually returned in 1995, after Renkse decided that Fredrik Norrman, a bandmate in his new group, October Tide, would fit in well. Soon after bringing the band back, Renkse discovered that he could no longer perform harsh vocals and focused on clean singing instead. So that the style wasn’t missing from their new material however, the band invited Opeth frontman, Mikael Åkerfeldt to perform death growls on their new album, "Brave Murder Day," which was released in November of 1996 through Avantgarde Music. The album was notable for going to pressing unmastered, something which wasn’t rectified until it was re-released in 2004 through Peaceville Records, along with their next EP, "Sounds of Decay," which also featured Mikael Åkerfeldt, who claims that two versions of the EP were recorded and that he preferred the unreleased edition. More EPs were released during this time, including, "Scarlet Heavens," (a split with Irish black metal band, Primordial,) which the group did not want released owing to it’s noticeably different sound from their previous work and "Saw You Drown" in 1997, which marked the start of Katatonia’s complete shedding of harsh vocals. Katatonia Discusses Upcoming Tours

Peaceville Records has posted a video clip online of Jonas and Per from Katatonia discussing the band's forthcoming tours: the "Epic Kings & Idols" tour with Devin Townsend and Paradise Lost, and the "Dead Ends of Europe" tour with Alcest and Junius supporting. All dates & tickets can be found at this location. Peaceville also commented on the band's upcoming "Dead End Kings" album:

"A continuation of 2009's inspired & acclaimed Night is the New Day, Dead End Kings sees Katatonia conjure yet another milestone in audial melancholy & angst. The Katatonia of 2012 is more potent, focused and creatively impactful than ever before. Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström - alongside guitarist Per Eriksson, bassist Niklas Sandin and drummer Daniel Liljekvist -- are at the peak of their powers right now, and their brand new studio album Dead End Kings provides incontrovertible evidence of their unstoppable artistic momentum. A rich, adventurous and endlessly evocative masterwork that exhibits all the Swedish quintet's established traits while absorbing countless fresh ideas into that monumental sonic brew, this is plainly the strongest and most beguiling album in the Katatonia catalogue to date. It also proves that sadness comes in many shades and that no one is safe from its cold allure."

"Dead End Kings represents progression and taking things to the next level," says Renkse. "The writing was a little more intense and spontaneous for this one. I think that's the biggest difference. But it was made with the same mindset as the last few albums. It just had a little more fire involved. We don't want to repeat ourselves. We are still hungry for new music." More...

Dew-Scented Confirmed For Summer Breeze

This year's Summer Breeze festival will be taking place from August 16th - 18th, with full details available at the festival's website here. The organizers of Summer Breeze have now issued the following announcement about confirming new bands:

"Since the release of their amazing breakthrough album 'Inwards', Dew-Scented have been at the forefront of European thrash metal. Since then, the cool bunch led by frontman Leif Jensen have been producing fantastic albums full of unstoppable riff power and overwhelming intensity at nicely regular intervals, cementing the band's excellent reputation time and again. In 2012, Dew-Scented aim at kick-starting their career with an entirely new line-up – with the exception of band boss Leif – and the fantastic new album 'Icarus', and are gearing up to shatter the Summer Breeze Open Air into small pieces. We are stoked to welcome the indestructible machine called Dew-Scented at our festival once more. Get thrashed!

"When Agrypnie played the Summer Breeze festival in 2008 for the first and only time so far, they were booked as consolation for all those who were mourning the recent disbanding of Nocte Obducta. Four years, one studio album and one EP later, the Hessians have made a career for themselves, having now reached the same level as the aforementioned group. Their new studio album is still being recorded as we speak, but their last EP 'Asche' was already an announcement for big things to come in the realm of post black metal. Expressive, multi-faceted, melancholic, dynamic – all these attributes fit Agrypnie like a glove and are underlined by the fact that their songs don't ever become predictable or interchangable. One of the most exciting bands our scene has to offer nowadays."

"We're proud to present to you the first glimpse into the world we've been living in for the last half a year. Instead of giving you just a snippet of audio, we decided to give you a 'lyric video' for a FULL song also showcasing some of the exquisite artwork to be found inside the album.

"We hope you will enjoy one of many diverse and differerent sides found on Dead End Kings by starting off with 'Dead Letters', one the most heavy and proggressive songs to be found on the album and certainly a new live classic. The Foreshadowing Added To Summer Breeze Lineup

The organizers of the upcoming Summer Breeze 2012 festival have issued the following update about confirming new acts:

"Italy is not exactly a hotbed for dark doom metal. Fortunately enough, there are always exceptions to confirm the rule. With the three albums they have released so far, The Foreshadowing have provided a master class in gloom and doom. Hailing from Rome, the band prove that it is indeed possible to write great atmospheric songs without falling into excessive pathos and kitsch. Especially singer Marco Benevento's clear, ear-piercing vocals take the group's material to a level which is only populated by bands such as Katatonia, My Dying Bride, early Anathema and even Opeth. Don't miss this black pearl of darkness! You will hardly experience anything bigger, darker and more epic at Summer Breeze 2012!

"Breakdowns aren't exactly the most innovative element in metal nowadays... However, if you use them with such conviction and vehemence as Bleed From Within, even the most athletically challenged of metalheads should soon mutate into pit fighter number one. The UK band have two albums out which should appeal to fans of As I Lay Dying, Bring Me The Horizon and Parkway Drive, while at times Bleed From Within are even more melodic than the aforementioned bands, only to dive into a brutal breakdown the very next second. All fans of metalcore and deathcore should highlight this band in their personal running order, as this is the perfect stuff for all of them!"

The festival is set to take place from August 16th - 18th, will full details available at this location. The currently announced bill is as follows: More...

Devin Townsend And Katatonia Announce Tour Dates

Canadian extreme metal outfit, The Devin Townsend Project, has announced that the band will be embarking on a co-headlining run of North America this Autumn, along with Swedish metal veterans Katatonia, with whom they will rotate headlining slots. British gothic metal legends Paradise Lost are also on the bill as direct support, with Stolen Babies confirmed as the trek's openers.

Speaking on the tour, Townsend stated: "So after a break in which we've managed to finish the live DVDs from the London shows (‘By A Thread’) as well as our surprisingly epic new record, 'Epicloud'...We're about to start getting into touring mode again, and it pleases me to announce that we'll be with some wonderful bands this Fall. I think this package pretty much covers the gamut of emotional heavy music, and really...It'll be nice to share the stage with some passionate folks who live for their music as much as we do. Again, we can't thank you enough for supporting what we do and allowing us to play for you. It will be nice to catch up, and we hope to see you there!"
