Archspire Explains "The Lucid Collective"
The terrifying technical death metal force that is Archspire just released a new full-length album last month titled "The Lucid Collective." Matching the dizzying heights of technicality found in the instrumentation, the album's themes explore the concept of infinite parallel realities and all life existing in a state both living and dead.
Wanting to spread the word about the release, Archspire got in touch with Metalunderground.com for a new interview. The full text can be read below, which covers everything from how the band connected with Season of Mist, why the members are drawn to this style of death metal, and what's been happening with fellow Vancouver metal outfits lately. Pit Stories: The Useless Sound Guy
Every week we have metal musicians from around the planet share their favorite stories from live shows, and while these are usually centered on the mayhem in the pit or the interaction between band and crowd, sometimes the best stories come from before the show has even started.
This week Eddy "Snow" Levitsky from Montreal outfit Hollow shares a story of something many metal bands can relate to: an uncooperative sound guy!
I’ll tell you a tale which has become one of the most used inside joke in Hollow. When you have gigs, most of the time, the venue will have all you need to accommodate your stage needs and if you’re starting out, the staff to help you. Sometimes, though, you get the one sound guy who’s had either too much to drink or hasn’t slept well enough before coming to work and who obviously does not care for your music, or anybody else but himself, for that matter.
I’m not sure if I can name which venue and when this happened, but I do remember the circumstances around this story. We were setting up our gear on stage and getting ready for the sound check. Every question or important fact that we needed to tell the soundman about our performance seemed like a chore to him, even though the guy was paid to do this. Hey, we rented your venue for a reason, we want to have a good night, and at least you could be pleasant with us, even if it’s just a little bit.
So we are completely set up and I take the microphone from its stand to start sound check. As I walk away from the stand, the mic gets stuck on something and I almost drop it. To our amazement, we all realize that I’ve got a six foot wire, plugged straight into the floor of the stage underneath the mic stand. Being six foot and one inch tall and needing to move to and fro on stage to give a better show, I turned to the sound guy and asked in the nicest way possible if he could procure me a longer wire, say a twenty five inch one or longer. I’ll never forget his face, bothered, vexed and desperate at the same time, as he looked at me and answered:
“Do you like, REEEEAAAAALLLLY need this?”
For our many readers who are musicians themselves, be sure to let us know your story of a venue employee who just had to make the night a little more difficult in the comments below.

Combichrist Plays Elysium in Austin, Texas
Metal Underground.com has followed Combichrist's recent jaunt over Europe with Mortiis. That tour must have been special with two of the major players in the modern electro-industrial scene. On Friday, May 2nd, I caught Combichrist's mechanized performance at Elysium in Austin, Texas. This tour saw them at the top of the bill with William Control and New Year's Day providing support.
I missed New Year's Day as the concert started at 9 and not 9:30 as the event markers stated. I can't say I'm a fan of their pop-friendly California rock style, but I did hear good things about their performance. Much like the industrialized section of nu metal, the group wore face paint and watching a female singer front a hard rock band is always fun. I wish I could say more about the Anaheim-based group, but for now the You-tube video embedded below will have to suffice.

As we were putting the tour together deciding on song choices and all that, we thought it would be a lot of fun to play all the songs on the record we first introduced to the world. We haven't played an album all the way through in over 10 years, so what better time to do it again than now and what better record to do it with? We're also going to play what our fans have deemed "the classics" from all our other albums, as well as test out a new song or two. We're also going to make this tour as personal as we can for our fans. We've got some surprises for you!"

Myon Releases New Single
Myon today treats the band's loyal fans with a brand new single release: “That Was Yesterday.”
The song is an updated version of Foreigner's smash hit from 30 years ago. "That Was Yesterday"
will be the second cover release by Myon during the group's almost 20 years of history. Keyboardist Mika Pohjola comments:
“We just had to release 'That Was Yesterday' as a single, because when I heard Marco Mannermaa’s interpretation I felt we had a version that would respect the original and combine the song with a modern sound."
This is the summer of Myon: soon after the single's release, the band's 5th album, "Vitalworks," will be released. According to guitarist Jyrki Laiho, the reasons for the album’s delay were simple: “The album has been recorded and mixed thrice so now we know we’ve done the best we can and the songs can work even when it comes to the most critical of listeners. In the current state of music business, more accurately in our situation, we could never afford to release something
done medium well.”
The cover art for the single and the upcoming album is in the hands of Uruguayan artist Tamara Picardo from Upon Shadows. More...

Winterfylleth Posts Track From Folk Compilation
Season of Mist is proud to present a new track from the compilation "One And All, Together, For Home," which features international metal artists gathered by Drudkh mastermind Roman Sayenko and will be released on May 23rd (May 27th in North America).
Winterfylleth's anglicised version of the traditional Scottish song “The Three Ravens” is streaming below, courtesy of Terrorizer.com.
"The idea behind this compilation is a coming together of like-minded artists from all across Europe in an attempt to rediscover the history and traditions of their respective areas of origin; through the medium of traditional music", explains Winterfylleth main man Chris Naughton. “Given that Europe has a particularly strong folk heritage all the bands contributing to this release are drawn from a broad range of countries that make up the continent; each with their own unique musical style & traditions to explore. One way that folk music has endured throughout the world's turbulent history is by people coming together and sharing the stories, tales and folklore of old; re-creating the melodies in a way that is relevant to them in the now. This compilation brings together eight artists, who have a strong historical interest and a pre-existing link to the music of their respective homelands." More...

Shining Signs To Season Of Mist
Season of Mist is proud to announce the signing of the controversial Swedish metal band Shining (not to be confused with the Norwegian blackjazz band of the same name).
The band is currently writing for a 9th studio album, due to be released by Season of Mist in early 2015. Regarding the signing, Shining mastermind Niklas Kvarforth comments:
"After a long period of negotiations and discussions that lasted almost eight years, I have now chosen to grant Season of Mist the privilege of releasing the next SHINING album. We have also once again decided to work with Andy La Roque and record at his Sonic Train facilities (Ascension, Hammerfall). The ceremony is set to begin in September, and thus my ninth child can be expected in early 2015."
Founded in 1996, Shining has since earned notoriety within the black metal underground as a result of the band's innovative and ever-evolving sound, in addition to main-man Niklas Kvarforth's frightening and abrasive stage persona.
Characterized by Kvarforth's philosophy on suicide, Shining was originally conceived as a "suicidal black metal" band, inciting violence within its rabid fan-base through the band's provocative lyrics and self-destructive imagery. Refusing to be bound by the confines of the genre, Shining later expanded its approach to songwriting and themes, incorporating melodic death metal passages and dynamic vocals ranges. Stay tuned for more info in the near future. More...
Origin Unveils "Omnipresent" Art, Track Listing
The death metal masters in Origin will release their new studio album entitled "Omnipresent" on July 4th in Europe via Agonia Records. Cover artwork was crafted by Colin Marks (Nevermore, Kataklysm, Exodus) and can be seen below.
Featuring the recording debut of new vocalist Jason Keyser (ex-Skinless), together with drummer John Longstreth (ex-Angelcorpse), guitarist Paul Ryan, and bassist Mike Flores, Origin marks a genre-defying return with this 6th full-length release. The band comments: "Omnipresent is a culmination of 15 years of technical death metal brutality that transcends definition. From light speed to absolute zero, it is a journey to the farthest reaches of the universe, to the darkest nether of the mind."
Jason Keyser had this to say about the new album cover: "We were very happy to be able to work again with Colin Marks of Rain Song Design for the artwork of 'Omnipresent.' He designed the art for our previous album, 'Entity,' which had a barren, stripped down minimalism, but for 'Omnipresent' we wanted bigger. We were looking for something that would represent the total insignificance and helplessness of humanity to the impending doom of the universe that surrounds us at all times. It's a strong running theme of the album lyrically, how our pride and arrogance can advance us as a species in so many ways, eventually conquering the unknown reaches of space, but ultimately we continue to exist only at the whim of the cold, indiscriminate forces that could snuff our sentient spark at any moment. Allegaeon Reveals New Album Details
With change comes new ideas, and "Elements of The Infinite" is the culmination of a flurry of new ideas within Allegaeon. It is, in essence, an album with a chip on its shoulder, a point to prove, and a big step out of the shadows from its predecessor.
With two new members, the band is in a very different place than its ever been, and the music reflects that. Guitarist Greg Burgess adds: "It is material that stays true to where we've come from, while exploring some new territory. We've had the opportunity to do some things we've wanted to from the beginning, but haven't been able to until now. We're very proud of this record, hopefully it will live up to what our fans have come to expect from us."
"Elements of the Infinite" will be released on June 24th, 2014 in North America, and a video for the new song "1.618" can be seen below. Guitarist Greg Burgess commented on the video:
"The 1.618 video is quite a departure from what Allegaeon has done in the past. For our music, lyrically speaking; it's been really hard for us to come up with story lines to capture what Ezra was singing about. So in the end we always ended up just having performance videos. This video is more like us hanging out and having fun, a reflection of our personalities, and well... poking fun at ourselves for the lack of success we've had with the music video medium."
After having spent some time in drummer-limbo, the band enlisted Brandon Park as a new permanent drummer in 2013. Additionally, the departure of Ryan Glisan led to the addition of guitarist Michael Stancel. More...

A Breach of Silence has effectively created its own type of sound, which fans have dubbed "power core". The five piece recorded its debut album with world-renowned producers Fredrik Nordstrom and Henrik Udd (In Flames, Bring me the Horizon, At the Gates, I Killed the Prom Queen).
The debut album "Dead or Alive" is an album that challenges many metal genres and brings something new and exciting to the world. "The album never gets old," explains guitarist Mat Cosgrove, "each time you listen to it you pick up on something different." The biggest difference though is saved for songs like "There Will Be Blood" and "Dawn to Rise" where high-pitched falsettos are heard that even Rob Halford would be proud of.
"People are initially totally dumb-founded when they see us live for the first time," Bass player and vocalist Blair Layt describes. "The faces on everyone are priceless, which might I add is a look of 'HOLY F$*K did you just hear that?!' with massive smiles."
Servants Of The Mist Recording New EP
Tampa merchants of misery Servants Of The Mist are entering the studio this month to record the follow-up to last year's well received "Suicide Sex Pact" EP (released last December 10th). The new EP will be called "Gross Knowledge of Genital Mutilation" and will again be self-released on digital format at bandcamp.
The new material will again carry themes of sorrow and depravity with even more devastating sonic results. In promotion of "Gross Knowledge of Genital Mutilation" the sextet will be touring this August, spreading their bitterness and misery throughout the East coast of the United States. While the new EP is waiting to drop, check out the three tracks from "Suicide Sex Pact" below.
