Unearthing the Metal Underground: Malefic Throne

The trio behind Malefic Throne don’t need a lengthy introduction if you’re a longtime aficionado of death metal. Guitarist Gene Palubicki (Perdition Temple, Blasphemic Cruelty) converged with drummer John Longstreth (Origin, Hate Eternal)—both of whom performed together with Angelcorpse—as well as vocalist/bassist Steve Tucker of Morbid Angel and Warfather. The legendary musicians are poised to release an utterly savage, self-titled EP via Hells Headbangers on January 28 on CD and tape. A vinyl version will be released later this year. More...

Al Case: Favorites Of 2020

First, a disclaimer… I don’t tend to listen to everything that comes out in order to pick my favorites. My listening, instead, focuses on bands I think I may be seeing in the coming year or bands I’ve seen in the past few years that I was impressed with.

These aren’t in any order, and a fuller list (including several non-metal albums) can be found here.

Also, check out Diamond Oz’s picks here. Our choices include one overlapping album. Of course, my personal favorites shouldn’t be considered concession picks of MetalUnderground.com.

Sodom @ Copenhell

Sodom – Genesis XIX

I always liked Sodom, but I didn’t listen to them much. They were supposed to play at the 2017 Gefle Metal Festival so in the six months prior I really started to get into them. Alas, they were a last minute cancel so I had to wait another year to finally see them live. That happened at 2018 Copenhell (pictured above) at about 2 a.m. I was blown away. That was a magical performance, and I’ve been a super fan ever since. Genesis XIX is their 16th album but called 19. Why? I have no idea. The album doesn’t create a new Sodom sound, and, in fact, some songs could have easily been on earlier albums. Even though there is nothing ground breaking or revolutionary here, Sodom delivers as well as they ever have and fans won’t be disappointed.

Dark Tranquillity @ 2019 Gefle Metal Festival

Dark Tranquillity – Moment

One of my favorite bands since I first heard them in the late 1990s, Moment is Dark Tranquillity’s 12th album. The only thing puzzling, to me, about Dark Tranquillity is why they aren’t more well known and respected. They always seem to be playing in the afternoon at festivals or opening for a couple other bands that should be opening for them in my opinion. Not to take anything away from bands like In Flames or Opeth, but it is odd to me that Dark Tranquillity has less than a third of the following on social media as them. Moment has only been out for a month so I have only listened to it a few times, but each listening sounds better (and the first run was fantastic on its own)—a good sign.

Redwood Hill – Ender

Blackened post-metallers Redwood Hill were one of the bands I most wanted to see at 2020 Copenhell, a festival which, of course, didn’t happen. Hopefully the 2021 version goes off without a hitch. Even the shorter songs on Ender are epic. If you’ve never heard of Redwood Hill and you enjoy black metal, post metal, or shoegaze then it’s time to experience an underground masterpiece.

Enslaved – Utgard

Enslaved’s 15th album was in my rotation since its release a few months ago, but I hadn’t really noticed how brilliant it was until a week or two ago when I listened to it after an edible I had consumed kicked in. That listening changed everything. Let’s just say it was a The Dark Side of the Moon kind of experience that you all should take part of.

Auðn – Vökudraumsins Fangi

Vökudraumsins Fangi is the third of three perfect, or nearly so, albums from Iceland’s Auðn. The writing is carefully crafted, beautiful, and well executed. The atmosphere created here provides therapy for a troubled soul. Put your headphones on, turn down the lights, grab your favorite beverage, and enjoy the best 55 minutes of your day.

Sodom Recruits New Drummer

German thrash metal legends Sodom has announced that they have recruited Toni Merkel as the band's new drummer, following the departure of Stefan "Husky" Hüskens. Speaking about his decision to leave Hüskens said:

"Unfortunately I have to tell you that I have to leave Sodom. Due to some changes at my full-time job, as well as a few other matters, I do not see any chance of continuing to crush the skins for Sodom in the future. I had a great time, I am proud of what we have achieved and I thank Onkel Tom Angelripper, Yorck Segatz and Frank Blackfire, and the entire crew for many extremely awesome moments. It was an honour to be part of one of my two all-time fave bands during the last two years. There are always important decisions in life and this is one of them! Thanks for everything!"

A statement from Sodom adds:

"Hail Sodomaniacs! Get ready for our new recruit: Toni! Flying under the radar for a long time, it’s a dream coming true for him. Brace yourself to get your face smashed by his awesome drumming! More information coming soon!"

Merkel comments:

"I am very proud to anounce that I am the new Sodom drummer and really looking forward to work and rehearse with these awesome guys for the next album and live shows. See you soon!!!"

Sodom Posts New Song Online

German thrash metal legends Sodom have released their new digital single "Out Of The Frontline Trench". This song is also the title track of the forthcoming EP, which will be released on November 22.

Tom Angelripper: "Postcards and letters from my granddad, which I discovered among the things he left behind when he died, and some TV documentaries have given me a vague idea of what it must have been like for soldiers back in those days to leave their trenches and face those life-threatening battles."

The close relationship between a metal band and its fans can be measured by - among other things - how long they make their supporters wait for new songs. So looking at it from that perspective, Sodom are definitely exemplary seeing that they’ve always supplied their huge following with new material at regular intervals. The release of their current album "Decision Day" was followed - in time for their major European tour in December 2018 - by the "Partisan" EP.

Now the Gelsenkirchen thrash metal act surrounding figurehead Tom Angelripper (vocals, bass) presents itself from its generous side again: Even before work on their upcoming album is set to commence, Sodom are ready to unleash their brand-new mini-album, "Out Of The Frontline Trench." Tom calls the recording “a sign of life for our fans”, having cut, together with his guitarists Frank Blackfire and Yorck Segatz plus drummer Husky, three new songs as well as two classics (one of them re- recorded, the other one a live number), "Out Of The Frontline Trench" forging an arch between Sodom’s past, present and future. 70.000 Tons of Metal: Day 3

Alright after 2 days of metal madness on board of the 70.000 Tons Of Metal cruise ship I guess everyone needed this: A relaxing day out on the beach. Early birds like me could even witness our arrival at Labadee, Haiti from the Windjammers buffet windows' awesome view, while having another delicious breakfast.

Labadee itself offered almost everything you would need for a fun-day out on the beach: Snorkelling tours, the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line (the world’s longest zip line over water), the 300 foot long Dragon’s Splash Waterslide, a kayaking tour, and many things more. Also a highlight - at least for most male metalheads: The 70K Tons Of Metal pool girls calendar photoshoot.

Refreshed and sun-burnt everyone slowly comes back to life back on board again and prepares for the night ahead:

Paradise Lost's second set on the boat, relied more on Draconian Times/Icon era material, opening with “Embers Fire”. Belting out “Hallowed Land”, “One Second”, “Faith Divides Us”, “Shadowkings”, ”Gothic”, “Pity The Sadness” the band really took no prisoners. Ultimately ending their set with “The Last Time” and leaving a more than happy fan-crowd.

Next up for me were teutonic thrash metal veterans Sodom, who reunited with guitarist Frank Blackfire fired off an almost entirely old school set: More...
