1985-1995: The Golden Age of Death Metal

Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.

Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...

70,000 Tons Of Metal, Day One: "Casting Off"

When winter strikes the northern hemisphere, we know it’s time for our annual sojourn to the biggest and best floating festival on earth – 70,000 Tons of Metal. Back on its third different boat in three years, Ultimate Metal Cruises returns to destroy the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean with the most diverse and powerful lineup in its sixth voyage. This year, the boat returned to Jamaica, but a different port – Falmouth. Last year, a disastrous blizzard it the Northeast U.S. leaving many stranded on the beaches of Ft. Lauderdale upon return to Port Everglades, something I surely hope wouldn’t happen (he says with tongue firmly planted in cheek). More...

Sodom Cancels MDF Appearance

Sodom has cancelled a scheduled appearance at the annual Maryland Deathfest - scheduled for this weekend in Baltimore - due to an issue with visa paperwork.

The post on Facebook reads: "The government approved the visa petition for SODOM, but then failed to send the required documents that would have allowed the band to actually get their visas despite repeated attempts by the MDF and the band to get those documents. The parties have been unable to get any answer from the government as to why the documents were never received by MDF or the band. The band is incredibly frustrated by this and so are we. We take a lot of pride in doing everything in our power to get foreign bands to the states , but it's really hard for us to swallow when the incompetence of the U.S. government messes something up."

The band was scheduled to headline in Edison Lot A on Saturday, May 23rd. Tickets for the fest can still be had by visiting this locaiton.

Sodom Releasing New EP

Tom Angelripper had this to say about new EP "Sacred Warpath" and on the state of the world:

"Since we've been getting the impression that the world is falling apart at the seams, we've decided to make our voices head ... while there's still time. 'Sacred Warpath' was originally written for our upcoming album, but we feel it's a good idea to release it now as an appetizer for future Sodom tracks.

"Because it's going to get raw, brutal and will be a reflection of all the things that we're afraid of and that give us nightmares. Pretty much like that hate-filled world we live in. And it's probably more authentic than any of our releases so far.

"The record includes three representative titles which we recorded in Germany this year, and it's guaranteed to become a rare collectors' item. The cover will feature a re-paint of an old design from the 80s, which I did for a demo cover, painted in oil by Christian Ermel. This may all sound a little old-school, but that's intentional. That's what we've always been and always will be about. We very much hope to tie over the waiting time until the arrival of our new album. And now listen to my unmistakable demand on this world: turn back on your sacred warpath and find the path of peace before it's too late. Our music will help you!"

The "Sacred Warpath" EP will be released worldwide through SPV / Steamhammer on November 28th in Germany, December 1st in Europe, and late January 2015 in the USA on CD, 10" clear vinyl, and digital download formats. The track listing is:

1. Sacred Warpath
2. The Saw Is The Law (live)
3. City Of God (live)
4. Stigmatized (live) More...

Kreator To Tour With Arch Enemy, Sodom & Vader

Kreator announced a new headline European tour with Arch Enemy, Sodom and Vader in support. The tour will begin on December 4th in Tilburg, Netherlands. The press release reads:

"Following the release of last year’s highly acclaimed and critically hailed live DVD/Blu-ray "Dying Alive," German thrash metal giants Kreator now announces a tour for November/December 2014, leading the true "hordes of chaos" throughout Europe as headliners, and with them a real high class selection of bands.

"Joining Kreator for the upcoming live shenanigans are Polish label mates Vader, Swedish death metal masters Arch Enemy and German thrash veterans Sodom.

"Frontman and icon Mille Petrozza comments: 'A lot of our European fans voiced their discontent over the fact that the band hardly does European club tours – apart from our festival shows. In 2013 we were mainly busy playing for our fans overseas. We want to change this now. In time for the reissues of 'Endless Pain,' 'Pleasure To Kill' and 'Extreme Aggression' in all kinds of formats – finally on vinyl again too - we'll end the 'Phantom Antichrist' tour cycle in Europe with a massive string of shows. This will be your last chance to see Kreator live in clubs for quite a while, because we'll be busy working on a new album in 2015 and only play carefully selected shows. Right now we're working on a new multimedia stage show and we'll also have a bunch of surprises in the setlist. Our friends of Arch Enemy are part of the trek to present their new album 'War Eternal,' and so will Vader and our old companions Sodom. This tour will be KILLER!!!“

Sodom Cancels Bangalore Show

Sodom has checked in with the following statement about canceling the band's previously scheduled live appearance in India:

"Due to solid problems we are forced to cancel the upcoming show in Bangalore/India. We already had our suitcases packed and were ready to go.

"We are awfully sorry to take these steps and we are deeply disappointed by this situation, but in the end there's the awareness that not everything is done to our entire satisfaction. We are 'only' the musicians, who would have loved to rock India and we owe this to our fans, even more because we never performed over there, of course through no fault of our own.

"The one who botched this up will have to be confronted with the fans and the local scene for his faults. We concluded a contract, which has strictly abided by our booking agency ourselves. In the end, this set of problems redounds upon us, because we're in the front line and have to be answerable to our fans.

"I hope we didn't lose too many fans due to this mess, but all people who know us are aware of the fact, that we would do anything for our fans. We hope for your understanding and keep you informed about the latest facts."

Sodom would have been performing in support of latest album "Epitome of Torture," which is out now. More...

The Big Teutonic 4 Comment On Beastival

The day the thrash metal world had been waiting for came this past Thursday at the Beastival Open Air in Geiselwind, Germany when The Big Teutonic 4 - Kreator Sodom, Destruction, and Tankdard - performed in front of thousands of metalheads.

Now, all four bands share their memories and thoughts of this memorable night. A photo taken after the shows by artist Stefan 'Heile' Heilemann of Heilemania can also be found below.

Kreator's Mille Petrozza comments: "My personal highlight were the fans! We had real bad luck with the weather and during our gig there was not just heavy rain but also a real storm so that it would rain on stage all the time. Our fans once more proved to be the toughest and best in the world and partied with us till the end. Touching and impressive at the same time. Beastival was a KILLER festival overall!"

Sodom's Tom Angelripper states: "Beastival was a special event for Sodom. The Big Teutonic 4 sharing the same stage... this event will go down in history. Aside of that everything else was just classy as well. I've barely experienced a festival as well-organized as this. And a special thank you also goes out to all the metalheads that stuck with us despite the heavy rain and made this festival a memorable and great experience for all of us! We're hoping on a repetition!" More...
