9:00am. For the first time since arriving, I wake up without a sore neck. In profound relief and gratitude, I kiss the small-but-soft pillow I managed to procure at Kik yesterday.
Before this, my strategy was simple: I’d rest my head on the stack of clean clothes in my open bag at the end of my tent. But as the days passed, the stack dwindled, until I felt like a neck injury victim tied to a crude, makeshift wooden stretcher.
There’s a preparation and packing lesson to be learned in there… somewhere. More...
German thrash act Sodom has issued the following announcement about beginning working on a new album:
"Hi fellows. At the time, we started the production of the new Sodom album. Makka finished all the drum tracks on Wednesday. And believe us, he did a great job and hammered twelve songs in just two days.
"Next week, Bernemann will start the guitar recording sessions. Again, we produce this killer album with Waldemar Sorychta.
"We will keep you informed as soon as we get more news for you. Thanx again for your loyal support and keep on thrashin."
Further details will be announced as they are made available. Sodom also recently released a 30th anniversary box set, "30 Years Sodomized - 1982-2012."
Mike, Schmier, and Vaaver from German thrash act Destruction are currently in Gernhart Studios in Troisdorf with engineer Martin Buchwalter to record their new thrash hammer. The thirty year anniversary album will be mixed by Andy Classen. In addition, there have been guest visits from Mr. Tom Angelripper and Gerre from Tankard.
Mastermind Schmier commented: "For this anniversary album we did a really great job, our new drummer VAAVER opens up new possibilities of course. On this album there are no limits. So fast, brutal and yet groovy we haven't ever sounded, probably! Also the guest musicians are very special this time: with Gerre (TANKARD) and Tom Angelripper (SODOM) our old friends and companions are with us, the original 'Mad Butcher/Release from Agony' - line up is doing one song and with Ol Drake (EVILE) we got the hottest young thrash guitarist for a few solos on the album!
"Germany's best extreme metal producer Andy Classen will take care for the brutal and raw production! The album will destroy even more than DOR: fast riffs, double bass attacks and brutal groovy songs, I think this time we found the 100% right mix!
"Also the 'Mad Butcher' returns to the cover. Cool artworks are very important for us; for the new thrash thunderstorm our artist Gyula created a real hammer again! The artwork makes clear immediately where to go - FULL FORCE AHEAD - as it has to be."

Back in 2005, Dimmu Borgir was a band still basking in the unholy success of its latest outing “Death Cult Armageddon.” And yet instead of launching into a new opus for fans to consume the band members decided on a new approach; they would re-release an early and often praised album (“Stormblåst”) by completely re-recording it, updating the sound with modern production and slap “MMV” on the end. There had of course been prior examples of bands making this choice, but it was perhaps here that best truly crystallized the new era of metal re-recordings. No doubt you have heard of similar re-recordings in the same vein, perhaps most recently Gorgoroth’s “Under the Sign of Hell 2011” or Burzum’s “From the Depths of Darkness”? Perhaps not, but that’s what I aim to uncover for you here. More...

German thrash metal band Sodom has announced that they have been forced to pull out of their scheduled show with Hirax in Katowice, Poland this Saturday, after guitarist Bernd "Bernemann" Kost was rushed to hospital. A message from the group's booking agent is as follows:
"A few minutes ago I received an upsetting phone call from Tom (Angelripper - vocals, bass) and Makka (Markus "Makka" Freiwald - drums) as Bernemann (Bernd "Bernemann" Kost - guitar) has been rushed to hospital.

As many people are aware, February is Black History Month in the United States of America. Always one to respect cultures and take part in something, we here at MetalUnderground.com are dedicating this month to the history of Black Metal. We will be looking at some of the biggest names in the genre, those who helped to shape it and some of the promising younger black metal bands in the underground.
While American thrash metal has it’s Big Four, with constant debate among fans as to who belongs there and who should be added to expand the number, German thrash metal has always had their Three Kings, who’s reign will never be challenged. We’ve already looked at Destruction, so this week we’ll be examining Sodom, who along with Destruction, proved to be a major influence on black metal as it is known today. The band was formed in 1981 by Tom “Angelripper” Such as an attempt to escape from his job as a coal miner and took much of their inspiration from New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands such as Venom, Tank and Saxon. After going through a few members, they eventually signed to SPV/Steamhammer Records and released their debut EP, “In The Sign Of Evil,” with a full length album, “Obsessed By Cruelty” following shortly afterwards. The album was widely panned by critics, dismissing the group as a second rate Venom and criticising their occult themed lyrics. More...
