Durst, Stapp Make "Worst Onstage Meltdowns" List

Two hard rockers - who happen to be the butt of many jokes in the metal community - have made Blender's "Worst Onstage Meltdowns" list (in the August edition).

Fred Durst:
When Metallica's 2003 Summer Sanitarium tour arrived in Chicago, few of the 40,000 headbangers gathered at Hawthorne Racecourse were keen to see openers limpbizkit. Possibly incited by a feud between bizkit frontman Fred Durst and local shock-jock Erich “Mancow” Muller, the crowd held up signs reading “Fred Sucks” and pelted him with garbage and coins. Dodging the barrage of detritus, Durst suggested that the audience's lousy aim explained why the local baseball teams were so bad — ironically, he was then struck squarely in the balls by a lemon. Calling the set to an early end, Durst berated the crowd from the wings, boasting that limpbizkit was the greatest band in the world, until his microphone was taken from him.

Shame Scale (7 out of 10)

Scott Stapp:
Messianic Creed singer Scott Stapp seemed over-refreshed before playing Chicago's Allstate Arena on December 29, 2002, possibly due to a cocktail of Jack Daniel's, Xanax and an anti-inflammatory steroid he'd been taking for his throat. After performing five songs, Stapp wandered off stage, and guitarist Mark Tremonti went backstage to look for him. He found the singer resting on a couch, apparently convinced he'd played a full set. Persuaded to return to the stage, Stapp removed his shirt and shoes before falling backwards over a monitor. He then got up and sang the wrong words to crowd favorites “Higher” and “Arms Wide Open.” Four fans later sued the band, demanding the entire audience be refunded.

Shame Scale (8 out of 10)

Lance Bass of N'Sync Comes Out Of The Closet

LANCE BASS, band member of N SYNC, says he's gay and in a "very stable" relationship with 32-year-old actor Reichen Lehmkuhl, winner of season four of CBS' "Amazing Race."

'Metalocalypse' Cartoon Featuring Metallica

METALLICA's James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett — along with members of ARCH ENEMY and NEVERMORE — have lent their voices to the cartoon series "Death Clock Metalocalypse". Check out the show teaser at this location.

Brendon Small, known for the series "Home Movies", co-created "Death Clock Metalocalypse" about a Norwegian heavy metal band called DEATHKLOK. Although they rock to the top of the charts with gusto, they are also incredibly stupid and leave a path of destruction and mayhem behind wherever they tour. The new series will premiere in August on on Adult Swim, the adult-oriented television programming block on Cartoon Network.

METALLICA had previously lent their voices to such animated shows as "The Simpsons" and "Dave the Barbarian".

666 Festivities

As you're no doubt aware, today is June 6, 2006 or 6.6.06, the day of the Beast. Here's a roundup of a few interesting features I saw on the 'Net:

"More Cowbell" Video

Reading my daily round of blogs today, there was an obscure reference to a "cowbell" which linked to this site, which contains a classic video of Saturday Night Live. The SNL skit revolves around the Blue Oyster Cult and features Christopher Walken as Bruce Dickinson and Will Ferrell as Gene Frenkle - a fictional character in charge of the cow bell (actually handled by BOC singer Eric Bloom).

Hatebreed's "To The Threshold" In Verizon Ad

Hatebreed's "To The Threshold" has been used in one of Verizon's recent online ads entitled "Helevator" promoting their VCAST service.

Verizon has done a great job with the ad. To sum it up, some people get stuck in an elevator and a girl whips out her phone to play a song. One of the choices is Hatebreed's "To The Threshold," which I of course selected given the other lame choices. What ensued was quite entertaining and well done for an ad. You can try it for yourself here (select the "Helevator" clip). How the geeky/wussy guy gets his shirt back on is a mystery to me...

"Best of" Metal Photo Gallery Posted

In our almost five years covering great metal bands, we've had the chance to meet and witness many great bands, people and our idols in person. I've prepared this photo gallery of some of the best photographs of those bands and moments. These guys rock and surely you can see why. Just check out the gallery.

Update on the April Fool's Gallery: Of course no disrespect was meant by posting some of the odd pictures we've taken over the years. Most are nothing more than an odd look or pose, whether looking away from the camera, looking like a deer in the headlights, caught in a weird pose or just looking so extreme that it's humorous. The photos didn't make the cut for the real photo gallery, but I put them away for something silly like this April Fool's gallery. These guys really do rock and we've enjoyed covering them all. \m/

The photos will remain online for posterity, however.

New Hope For Black Metal

Only once in a decade do we witness art of such proportions. The music of this black metal superband has been circulating the underground scenes for a few years now but it wasn't until the kindred spirits of MTV declared them " a landmark in black metal history" that IMPALED NORTHERN MOONFOREST started selling millions and millions of albums worldwide.

Upon listening to their awe-inspiring music, it is impossible to overlook the sublime interlocking of artwork, lyrics and song composition. And yet, it only took them a few hours to record and mix this exquisite material and fine example of what true black metal should sound like. When asked what is the main inspiration behind the raw lyrics, mainman Seth replies: "We don't want to limit our fans' perception, we want everyone to interpret our lyrics for themselves". Rather elusive, but oh, so wise.

Unfortunately, the mp3 are currently unavailable on their website but do check back at a later time. In the meantime, I strongly encourage you to visit the About and Fanstuff sections. Behold the KVLT art.

RIAA Sues Deaf Woman For Downloading Music

In a new low, the RIAA are reportedly suing a 77 year old Nebraska woman for downloading music files to her computer. However, Edna Springer claims she does not know how to download music online and furthmore has no need to since she was born completely deaf.

That's not stopping the RIAA, however. They continue to use hardball tactics to get her to settle for a reported $12,000.00, an amount that Edna has never even earned in a year's salary, much less could afford on her retirement.

A spokesperson for the RIAA had this to say: "Ms. Springer has violated the rights of hundreds of music artists and corporations around the world and needs to pay them for their work that she stole. Our methods leave no room for error, and we know that she has downloaded at least 540 songs. What she does with them is not our concern. She has broken the law and violated copyrights of our clients."

Ms. Springer has been widowed for 20 years and does not have relatives or friends who use her computer, only a dog.

An initial hearing is scheduled for May 15, 2006.

Metalunderground.com To Cover Nu-Metal Exclusively

Official Press Release:

In light of nu-metal's recent death and newfound underground status by most bands who play it or are just beginning to play it, we proudly present the new nu-Metalunderground.com. Metalunderground.com will be devoting all of its resources to promoting this once-loved genre starting tomorrow, April 2, 2006. Bands such as Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Godsmack and others will still be covered, probably even more than usual.

"With metalcore, hardcore and most forms of metal back on the rise, there is only one worthy place to dedicate all of our resources," commented the sites owner, known only as "deathbringer." "The other upside is that we can weed out all of those whiners who only want "real metal" or "underground" news now and we'll be supporting what we truly love...until emo goes back underground at least."

A new site desgin with a more nu-metal feel will be forthcoming. Thank you for your time and patronage.

Danzig Unveils Reality Show, Announces Tour

His ego still reeling from being leveled by North Side Kings singer Danny Marianinho nearly two years ago (a working video link can be found on Google Videos), Glenn Dazig has reportedly inked a deal with an undisclosed TV network for a new reality show. The show seems to be a combination of "Battle for Ozzfest" and "The Contender," in that Danzig is offering up a supporting spot on this year's tour to the band who can field a member that can knock him out in the [boxing] ring.

Bands rumored to be involved in this competition include:

Drowning Pool
The Esoteric
Avenged Sevenfold
Fear Before The March Of Flames
Sicks Deep

And of course North Side Kings

Bands apparently were under the impression that this would be a musical competition like "Battle For Ozzfest." Atreyu and Avengend Sevenfold, who are rumored to have been heavily recruited by the show organizers and Danzig himself.

"They've leveraged every possible thing they can, from touring restrictions to a hefty fine for breaking the contract, so once we found out what this [show] was really about, we were already trapped," said Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows. It's all about stroking [Glenn] Danzig's ego. I mean, why else would he was a bunch of young metalcore and emo bands on here?"

"Well, we should still get some good exposure out of the TV time. We hope they play some of our music at least," said Dan, from Atreyu. "I'll be taking one for the team here. It's ok, we're all used to getting beat up anyway," he reflected, almost to himself.

Danny Marianinho commented as well. "I knew what the score was when we got the call. He's probably been working out for the past two years, hardly touring at all. I feel sorry for those other bands, but I'm not worried for myself. I know it'll still only takes one punch and he'll crumble like a broken toy."

Danzig had only swearing to offer after apparently being offended by an intial question asking if he was trying to boost his ego.

Guns N Roses are said to have been tapped for the show's theme song, having re-recorded a version of "Get In The Ring" with guest vocals by Danzig.

Fittingly, this year's tour has also been renamed "The Blackest Eye" tour. Show network and times and tour dates to be announced shortly.

If Alf Were To Make A Death Metal Music Video

I'm sure this video has been floating around the Internet for a while, but I just saw it. "If Alf Were To Make A Death Metal Music Video" - the title says is all. The video is clips of that bad 80's muppet star of his self-named TV show, Alf, "playing" Exhumed's "DeathWalks Behind You." You can watch the video here.

Antimusic.com Has Fun With Ozzfest Rumors

With all the rumors going around about the bands on Ozzfest, Antimusic.com thought it would be fun to look at some of the latest rumors:

Guns N' Roses - We now know that Axl and company are making the rounds at European festivals this Spring but will they headline Ozzfest? It could happen but then again they could easily sellout the same venues on their own and keep all the cash instead of sharing with Sharon.

AC/DC - Given that Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, two bands that do well on their own, have done the tour in the past it's not too crazy to think of AC/DC heading the fest but again they might be better off on their own.

Korn - Since they aren't drawing like they used to on their own this might make be a good fit.

Alice in Chains - Judas Priest used Ozzfest for their comeback but a Layne-less AIC might not attract enough $$ for Sharon.

System of a Down - Given how much they love greedy capitalist like Sharon, who knows?

Body Count - Ice T supposedly told a radio DJ that they are doing it. Would be kind of cool to have a credible rap rock band on the tour for a change.

Tool - would be cool but they are supposed to have some conflicting summer gigs already in the can.

Metallica - management killed this rumor. Maybe they will team up with Guns N Roses again and do stadiums? Hey we can start rumors too, just look at the next section!

Since rumors are so fun, we're gonna start our own. Sharon wants to expand Ozzfest's reach and wants to sell as many tickets as possible so what about these bookings? Backstreet Boys, 50 Cent and Britney Spears. Think it's a stretch? Sharon did put Crazy Town on the main stage one year and let's not forget about Linkin Park and Adema.
