Swarm Of The Lotus Calls It Quits

Baltimore metal band Swarm of the Lotus are officially breaking up. The band will play their final show on November 1st at Ottobar with Goatwhore and a few other bands to be announced later.

Here's the official statement from the band:

"So, it has reached its end. After 8 years, I have decided to put the monster, the rolling ball of chaos that it is, to rest for the long hall.

I never thought I'd reach that point with this project. But after years of mostly struggle to even exist, I have come to the realization that it has always been somewhat of a broken project trying desparately to push forward. With all the line-up changes, relearning processes, constant bad luck on the road, and the general one-step-forward, two-steps-back blackhole that the band sank into, it has been hard to even recognize who and what exactly we are. And to try and maintain constant motivation and confidence that in the end everything will work out just fine, can be taxing and has only and finally started to affect me very recently. Now I'm not saying it was all bad, I don't want to paint it with that brush.

I feel nothing but grateful and fortunate for all of the things the band has managed to accomplish over our time and have enjoyed playing with everyone that I've had the pleasure of doing so with. And to any of you who appreciated what we had to bring to the table, thank you. Mountains of thanks to all the people that might have had a hand in helping or supporting the band in any and all ways. I could never say enough.

This also doesn't mean that I personally will be giving up playing, no way. I could never do that and neither will anybody who is currently in the band. So be on the lookout for those guys in future projects that they may do. As for me, I feel that this is all a good thing and that by putting this gargantuan project to rest, I can start fresh with new music, in a new project, with renewed enthusiasm. Until then, thank you once again for everything, to all of you who cared and became part of the history of the band.

Thanks,
Pete/Swarm of the Lotus"

Candlemass Frontman Ousted

After months of uncertainty, Candlemass has officially parted ways with frontman Messiah Marcolin. Here's a statement from the band:

"You have heard the rumours and it is with a heavy heart we must make this official. The band have tried to solve the situation several times, but Messiah cannot be persuaded to sing on the new album. His attitude and demands are way too unreasonable. I'm very sorry about this, not surprised though.

We have all been very disappointed with Messiah's behaviour during the previous years reunion, especially with his childish and undemocratic way to "discuss" matters before the May recording at Polar in Stockholm. It's not cool when one person refuses to listen to other people, don't give a shit about his bandmates and demands special treatment. Sure, a little bit of primadonna vices is allowed in a band. But when it comes to the extent that it's "my way or the highway" in every little discussion that comes up, it is not fun anymore. We like the thought of five equal metalheads playing together, having fun in the rehearsalroom, at gigs etc. That's the whole point of it if you ask us. Unfortunately negativity and stupidity have been dictating the rules for Candlemass lately.

We hope you all can understand how disappointed we are. And angry! Disappointed with the fact that a grown man can behave so badly towards others – his friends – and for such a long time. And so easily, when he doesn't get everything he wants, throws it all away. We're still in chock! We never thought it was possible for somebody in this great band to have such a bad attitude towards his bandmates! We are also angry that we have bought the shit for so long. Been fucked over so much, so many times since the reunion 2002. It's really shameful! It only took a couple of gigs to understand that Messiah wasn't back to make friends, so we have fought hard to keep this together for you - our fans. It's been a rough ride, but when you stand in front of 200 or 2000 or even 20 000 screaming fans it's worth all trouble.

And yes, it was close that last album didn't include Messiah, but we made it happen because we love this music and we love that you guys love us!! But it was the last album with Messiah Marcolin on vocals. We can't deal with the big man anymore. Sorry!! We tried to reason with him before the recording of the new one but Messiah's behaviour was beyond the acceptable. Mr. Marcolin has been too much to take and the reasons behind his departure from Candlemass are not very flattering for him. No details, sorry....too embarrassing.

On the positive side (there is one!), this can make the band stronger and lead to something better. We don't stand and fall with Messiah Marcolin. We will look hard for a worthy replacement because we got a superb album recorded already. With the right voice it will kill!! We hope for a new start with Candlemass, a band we love way too much to ditch because of one rotten apple!"

Ex-Diabolic Guitarist Dies

Florida-based death metallers DIABOLIC have issued the following update:

"Just got a call from Jerry Mortellaro [ex-DIABOLIC guitarist] tonight letting us know that Bryan Hipp, ex-DIABOLIC guitarist, died last night [Saturday, Oct. 21]. Cause of death unknown.

"Bryan Hipp helped write songs off the DIABOLIC album 'Subterranal Magnitude' and helped DIABOLIC complete the 'Death Metal Massacre' Metal Maniacs tour 2000, opening for CANNIBAL CORPSE, GOD DETHRONED and HATE ETERNAL.

"We are posting the song 'Infernalism' Bryan Hipp wrote back in 1999. Bryan Hipp also played in BRUTALITY, CRADLE OF FILTH, and in BLASTMASTERS he helped write the song 'Implemented Digital Control'!!! On stage Bryan Hipp would explode with raging headspins. His talent to create some of the most dark and evil riffs will be missed."

As previously reported, DIABOLIC uploaded a new song, entitled "Devour the Subconscious", to their MySpace page. The track comes off the band's new album, "Shellfire and Tombstones", which was recorded and mixed in July/August 2006 at Diet Of Worms Studio in Seffner, Florida with producer Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez (MORBID ANGEL). The album features artwork by acclaimed Swedish artist Mathias Noren and is tentatively scheduled for release late 2006/early 2007 through an as-yet-undetermined label.

Legendary NYC Venue CBGB's Closing

CBGB's is the legendary NYC club that spawned punk rock while launching the careers of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Blondie, the Talking Heads and the Ramones.

This Sunday is the last of the band sticker blanketed, 300 person capacity venue, the last of classic NYC punk heritage; memories will be all that will remain. As stated in the Associate Press: "Although its boom years are long gone, CBGB's remained a Manhattan music scene fixture: part museum, part barroom, home to more than a few rock and roll ghosts."

Last year many bands such as Gorilla Biscuits did benefit shows to keep the venue open, but due to the landlord-tenant dispute, it will be closed by Sunday. "I knew the closing was inevitable, because my lawyers said, `You can't win this case. The law is that your lease is up, and they don't even need a reason to put you out,'" said owner Hilly Kristal. Kristal plans to relocate to Las Vegas, where I'm sure all the memoribilia from the venue will be well received. She also plans to auction pieces of the interior and other such CBGB memoribilia on Ebay.

CBGB has incredible shows lined up this week including the '80s hardcore band Bad Brains and the '70s punks the Dictators. It is rumored that Blondie's Debbie Harry and Chris Stein are also stopping in.

CBGB's last show is October 15th and the club will reopen in the near future. CBGB Fashions: (the CBGB store, wholesale department, and online store) will remain open at our 315 Bowery premises until October 31. On November 1, they will move to and open CBGB Fashions at Broadway and Bond Street. All phone numbers will remain the same.

Cynic Reunite

Long-defunct Florida-based band CYNIC, whose 1993 album Focus is regarded as a landmark release in the field of technical/progressive metal, have announced plans to embark a reunion tour in the spring/summer of 2007, beginning with possible U.S. warm-up performances and culminating in a number of festival appearances across Europe.

The reunion lineup is as follows: Paul Masvidal - vocals/guitar, Sean Reinert - drums/keys, Tony Teegarden - vocals/ keyboards, Chris Kringel - bass, Santiago Dobles – guitar

Kringel, who replaces Sean Malone (who can't participate in the reunion because of teaching and work commitments) in Cynic's reunion lineup, has been involved with the band since the pre-Focus days and toured with the band in Europe in support of the CD. He also played bass on the classic and much-sought-after PORTAL demos and toured the UK with Paul and Sean's AEON SPOKE project. Teegarden also previously toured with Cynic in support of Focus, while Santiago — who is said to be "the man behind AGHORA" — has been around the Cynic camp since 1993-94 and was one of Masvidal's guitar students in Miami back in the day. The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower Breaking Up

San Diego's The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower has announced their impending break-up. Following a fall tour, the group will permanently disband. Additionally, a seven-song mini LP, "Saviours & Suckers," will be released posthumously by Three One G. The group has issued the following statement:

"Over the course of the last five years we have accomplished and exceeded every goal we had set out to accomplish. We saw the world, and in the process made half of it fall in love with us and the other half wish us dead. We released records that will surely be regarded as classics in the years to come. We made life long friends in faraway places. Perhaps most importantly, four best friends watched each other grow from boys to men."

Khanate Calls It Quits

"Extreme doom" metal band KHANATE, the brainchild of Stephen O'Malley (THORR'S HAMMER, BURNING WITCH, SUNN 0))), LOTUS EATERS) and James Plotkin (OLD, SCORN, ATOMSMASHER), has disbanded. In a statement, Plotkin writes, "I have decided to leave KHANATE due to the lack of commitment of certain members. The decision was a difficult one, as I've put six years and immeasurable amounts of creativity into the band hoping to take it as far as possible. The past year has brought about many missed opportunities and the realization that some players are more concerned with personal careers and day jobs rather than the advancement of music as an artform.

"I will continue to work with drummer Tim Wyskida on a number of other projects, mainly KHLYST and our improvisational duo.

"Gratitude to all those that have supported what we have done and acknowledged our importance in modern music.

"The companion album to 'Capture & Release' is currently being mixed. This yet untitled work consists of spontaneous recordings made during the 'C&R' sessions dating back to February 2005. This will be my final work in KHANATE. There are plans for Japanese issues of the self-titled and 'Things Viral' CDs with expanded packaging and bonus discs with unreleased material."

Stampin' Ground Calls It Quits

After months of speculation, UK metal band Stampin' Ground (Century Media Records, Thorp Records) has confirmed their imminent demise. The band has issued the following statement:

"We slogged our hearts out for 11 years; harder than any band we've ever met, and we loved every minute of it. It's been the greatest ride and were proud to have been part of it, but all good things come to an end and so has SG. This has nothing to do with musical differences, personal stuff or any other lame ass excuse you've heard a million times, truth is we just feel the time is right to hang it up. We never set out to win the world title, we just wanted to go the distance for 15 rounds and get some good punches in."

Prior to disbanding, the group will embark upon one final UK tour. Here's the info:

10/15 Manchester @ Damnation Festival
10/26 Newcastle @ Trillians
10/27 Sheffield @ Corporation

Shining Replace Singer On Possible Suicide Of Last

Swedish black metallers SHINING have posted the following statement regarding frontman Niklas Kvarforth has committed suicide:

"There have been many rumours saying that our front-man, founder Kvarforth is dead, we wish these speculations to be put to an end by telling you what we know: a couple of days ago, we received a letter from a person very close to Kvarforth telling us that Kvaforth had decided to leave this world behind and also introducing as a kind off last will, a new singer to replace him for future events of Shining. All that we know for 200% is that Kvarforth has been missing for the past four weeks and might be dead. We don´t really know for us, the band. This comes as no surprise as he has been suffering from extreme anxiety and depression the past six months and some truly extreme things, considering his own personal life, occurred dramatically right before he disappeared. However, we wish to send our deepest regrets to our friend and sadistical leader Kvarforth wherever he might be! Kvarforth did as mentioned, involve a new singer in the band without telling us before he left. His name is Ghoul and will be introduced on the release-show we are holding in December. No one of us, the band members have meet him yet but a contact have been established via letter-exchange, and as this was Kvarforth’s own will, we are now officially presenting our newest member, whoever this might be, Ghoul. It shall also be said that both me and the guys in the band have heard Kvarforth's wish that Shining should get a new singer if he died or disappeared but we never thought that it would come to this point! But it has so we welcome Ghoul to this misery."

The Banner Calls It Quits

New Jersey's The Banner has disbanded. Formed in 1999, the band has released albums with Blackout! Records and most recently, Ferret Music. Vocalist Joey Southside has issued the following statement:

"The saddest thing I've ever had to do is announce that The Banner is no more. After 7 years of playing, writing and recording i've decided its best for the band to simply put it to bed. Some of the members have decided that the full-time touring lifestyle just isn't for them and I cant' blame them. The Banner has gone through a zillion member changes since the its inception but the current line-up was what I most felt "The Banner" should be, with perhaps the inclusion of Garrett. I'd like to thank all the bands we played with, especially Folly, Modern Life Is War, GETREAL, Himsa, Death By Stereo, the Breakout, Mermaid In A Manhole, My Chemical Romance, The Sleeping, Burn the Tyrant, Senses Fail, Ensign, Shattered Realm and god only knows who else, I'm not thinking too clearly right now as I'm quite shitfaced. I'm reasonably sure Chris, Mike and Ian are all going back to school and I'll be continuing doing the comic books and concentrate on my new band Wolvez. Anyway, again thank you to all the kids and people who have supported us over the years, all the people who have gotten us shows or fed us or let us sleep at their homes on tour. Thanks to Blackout, Warmachine and Ferret records for all their help and thanks to our families and girlfriends for putting up with the bullshit. I personally want to thank all the Jersey kids who have stuck by us from the begining. I appreciate it more than you'll ever know or I could ever tell you with words. Your support was a lot more than I deserved."

Man Arrested For Beating At Korn Concert

WSBTV.com reports that Atlanta Police say they have charged a man with the murder of Andrew Richardson — who died after being beaten at a KORN concert.

Police say they have arrested 24-year-old Michael Scott Axley and charged him with Richardson's murder.

Richardson and his friends were attending a concert for the band KORN at the Hi Fi Buys Amphitheater July 30 when Richardson and Axley were allegedly involved in an altercation.

"We just went out there to have a good night," one friend, Eddie Arellano, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It was starting off fun. And then this whole thing turned into a nightmare."

According to Arellano and others at the concert, there was a group of rowdy men at the show.

"These guys were just way too drunk. They had too many fights," Arellano said.

Earlier in the evening, some of the rowdies tumbled down a hill, crashing into Richardson and his friends. There was a brief scuffle, according to Bernice Averil, who was in Richardson's group. A little later, the rowdies returned and one of them snatched Richardson's cap.

"When they took his hat he stood up and said 'We've already had a fight. I don't want to have any problems.'" Arellano said, describing the moments just before the punch. "The guy threw the hat back at him. And when he [Richardson] caught it, the guy hit him in the face and he [Richardson] hit the ground and hit the concrete with the back of his head. He just collapsed.

"His face was bloody. It was bad. It was horrible," said Arellano, who also was Richardson's roommate. The person who threw the punch and that person's friend ran off, Arellano said.

Richardson sustained a serious head injury and he died August 1.

Man Badly Beaten At Family Values Concert

A 30-year-old man who was beaten in the mosh pit at the Family Values show at Atlanta's Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheater on Sunday night is hospitalized and on life support after being declared brain dead. According to Atlanta's WSB-TV, 30-year-old Andy Richardson is in critical condition following the fight, during which two unidentified men attacked him in the mosh pit after Richardson asked the men to be careful not to hurt his pregnant girlfriend and a mentally challenged child they had with them.

"Can you imagine your child goes to a concert and be killed for it, because of people out there fighting to have a quote unquote good time?" Richardson's mom, Gloria told the station. "And I'm angry. I'm very angry. Why were the police not there to stop them?"

A friend of Richardson's who attended the Korn-headlined show with him, Edgar Arellano, said the fight broke out after Richardson asked the men to be careful, but it ended soon after that and the men left the area. "We were all enjoying the concert, we were having a good time, until these two guys came around," Arellano said, adding that the men showed up again and one of them punched Richardson in the head, knocking him head first onto the concrete.

"He was unconscious. He had blood all over his face when I picked him up," Arellano said.

WSB-TV reported that homicide investigators are looking into the beating, but have only a vague description of the suspects. A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department could not be reached for comment at press time. A spokesperson for the amphitheater could not be reached for comment.

Richardson's mother said her son is brain dead and on life support and is not expected to live.

Boy Sets Fire Calling It Quits

Boy Sets Fire will be breaking up this fall. Formed in 1994, the Delaware band has previously released material with Initial Records, Victory Records, Wind-Up Records, and Equal Vision Records, among others. Here's a statement from the band:

"Dear friends, it is not with a heavy heart that we write these words but with a head held high. We wanted to collectively inform you that Boysetsfire has decided to retire. Thank you all for your support and belief in us over the last 12 years... please know it meant the world to us. Boysetsfire for us was always a vehicle for changing the world and we believe that change comes about by starting with yourself, so instead of awaiting certain things to come our way, as always we decided to take our destiny in our own hands. We're not sure which path each of us will take from here on out, but we plan to continue following our dreams... we will play all the shows of our upcoming European tour and possibly one or two last shows on the East Coast sometime this fall (we will keep you posted on this). Good-night."
