Otep Dropped By Label In Capitol-Virgin Merger

Band Photo: Otep (?)
Less than two weeks before the scheduled release of their new album 'The Ascension', Otep are among the first acts dropped due to the merger between Capitol and Virgin Records. Capitol signed the band in 2000 based solely on their performance during the 2000 edition of Ozzfest.
It was previously announced that "The Ascension" had been delayed and the disc would be released "as soon as corporately possible," which seems to mean when they get signed to a new label now.

I agree with Seawitch. I've seen otep, shes a beast(a hot beast).
most impressive female vocalist for a metal band, but as far music-wise theres definately better bands, but I can appreciate the artistic side of her work which you all most not know sh** about. music is a form of art(which is a persons individual idea), yet other bands pretty much follow the same style, which doesn't make it unique at all, just the same thing reused over and over, she can at least put out something different with each album.
f*** YOU ALL!!!!!!!!

i don't know much about alot of stuff but i have enough common sense to know when a band sucks and this one sucks and the fact that their style inspired another horrible band (jada pinkett's wicked wisdom) just pisses me off further. yea so she's kinda hot but definately not the best female metal vocalist.....i'd have to say that would be angela gossow from arch enemy, she's just got brutal vocals.

I knew I would get sucked into this thread eventually.
Actually....
I think her vocals are "decent" among growly female singers.
But there are sooooooooo many things that shoot the band in the foot.
1.) More often than not, poor lyrics....
2.) She refuses to --sing-- when she clearly has the capacity for something at least passable.
3.) The rap style delivery (is so 1999)...even Kittie had the smarts to dodge the trappings of that angle.
4.) Her rants on stage/online/ her site etc etc...make her seem pretentious and self aggrandizing in a way that eclipses Trent Reznor (no small feat)....very, very dramatic.
5.) The instrumental sound is so unabashedly nu-metal that it embodies cliche.
How she looks is a "to each their own" thing (as is the rest of my rant, heh) and really has no place here......
However from where I stand Lisa Marx, Angella Gossow and Christina Scabbia remain the angels of metal.

There are so many good female metal singers out there... I like nearly all of them. Especially Simone Simons, Christina Scabbia, and Sharon Den Adel....
But still, pretentious or not, OTEP has some great songs out there - "My Confession" and "Jonestown Tea" come to mind in particular. They may not be my favorite female-fronted band, but I hope they find a new label and get that record out soon. I still listen to NIN, and I don't give a damn about Reznor's likes, dislikes, or anything else. I just buy them for the music. And, for the record, I like a lot of bands that are sooo (insert decade here)'s because they have the fortitude to be themselves, and not cede to popular demand.
My 2 cents, anyway.

There's no need to start a new label for bands that are dropped, do you realize how many labels there are? Really there's only 4 major labels with a ton under each one but there are like thousands of indie labels all over.
And I think that Christina Scabbia is the hottest of the female singers. I didn't say that she's the best singer out of everybody but she's very hot.

YES! YES! Fvcking fvck OTEP. With their big, unsigned asses. This self-centered twat and her shxtty band need some time off anyways. Hopefully, they'll use their newfound time to reflect upon their careers, and discover that maybe they all would be better suited as Burger King employees and janitors. I can't stand OTEP.

RememberMetal? you left out the smokin' hot diva that is Tarjia Turunen (sp?) formerly of Nightwish. She's an amazing singer as well, and Nightwish is light years talentwise ahead of Otep. As far as the label dropping Otep, personally I didn't like them so I don't care-it leaves room for a better and more deserving band. But like everything, opinions are like rectums.
Now Playing:"Begin and End" from Theater of Tragedy

I have to agree with Remember Metal?
Otep could be good, but their average...The rants on the disc are annoying and get old. The music is simple and the rap needs to go. They do have a couple good tracks, but I kinda gave up on them after Sevas Tra.
Prediction: They sign to Century Media and Sharon puts them on Ozzfest.

Otep Denies Rumors Of Being Dropped By Capitol Records
OTEP frontwoman Otep Shamaya has issued another statement in response to the persistent rumors that the band has been dropped by Capitol Records as a result of the recently announced merger of Capitol and Virgin Records into the Capitol Music Group.
OTEP's third full-length album, "The_ Ascension", was previously scheduled for release on March 20. The CD was recorded in New Orleans over the course of several months with Grammy-winning producer Dave Fortman (EVANESCENCE, MUDVAYNE).
Commented Shamaya: "It is true Capitol is going through a very intense reorganization at this time. To the question: Are we dropped? No official word has come down to us. Would it matter? Not really. The matrix of this band is titanium strong. With myself, eViL j, our management, lawyers, pencil pushers, finger pointers, and other assorted suits, sages, soldiers, PLUS our fans and supporters — this collective is ready to walk through Vesuvius without breaking a sweat.
"The only thing that truly 'sucks' about this reorganization is the delay of the album which is inevitable. Could be a week, could be a month — but it's going to be delayed. I know, I know but think how we feel. I started writing songs for this album on a plane while flying to our first show on Ozzfest 2004 — so imagine how frustrating this for us. Over two years of my life poured into an album that sits in a frozen stasis waiting for paperwork and emails and Excel and PDF files to be reviewed and stamped in boardrooms somewhere high above the smog and kinetic violence that spirits the frenzied climaxes that nourish me. What a world.
"The STATIC-X tour is going to be INSANE. You think our shows have been insane in the past?? Ha. Nothing can prepare you for what we are about to unleash.
"We can't wait to enter the ritual with all of you again. We are thankful for such insane, passionate supporters."

Oh ! by the way, du to an unfortunate...ahem...accident...I...Er...ended up getting the whole new machine head album...I didn't really want it but my computer downloaded it and wouldn't let me eraseit...yeah that's what happen. And don't worry I will buy it when it comes out, and this it the truth, I swear. But just to let youknow that it is absolutely great, a$$ kicking to the max, 9 minutes long songs. The guitars are awesome, some very great solos in there. The drumming is brutal as well. honestly, it is a very dark album but I ca nsay that itb is their most technical and brutal album to date...so I urge you guys to mark down the date when it comes out and of you are a Machine Head fan go buy it...lit is a sure value to add to your cd collection. And yes I still swear I will buy it because I want this band to continue making great music.

Hey Mdigiddy, did it ever occur to you that some of these people never liked them in the first place?! I was absolutely never a fan of this band. I'll admit back in the day I liked Limp Bizkit but Wes Borland was always the best part of the band and it got old. I didn't not like it anymore because it was on MTV, Limp Bizkit was on MTV for their entire shelf life. And people can put down whatever bands they want if they don't like them, if someone doesn't like them then they don't. Everyone has the right to their own opinion and music tastes. I personally don't really give a sh** what you listen to because you'll probably never be back anyway.
And to the having too much time to waste remark, how long does it really take to read the news on some bands? Not that long. I like to know what the f*** is going around in the genres that I like. It's the same thing as if you were to read a newspaper, only it's metal. Now just stay over at MTV.com, you're more welcome there.

Since when does one have to look good to be in a metal band? Why should it matter which female metal singer is hotter? I say look for talent and judge them on that. I love Arch Enemy and Otep. I believe they are both kickass bands for the music they put out- each different in their own rite.

73. writes:
Well Otep's first album JIHAD was borderline good for one listen / new metal sh** and it was only because Shamaya's voice was sexy that I gave the next album a listen and FILTHY was a good song from the first. ok it to was OK But the album after that (House Of Secrets) took them to a new level and kept it on the heavier side. IT ROCKED and I'm looking forward to there new album.
I don't see what the fuss with Arch Enemy is. Angela Gossow has a amazing voice and the band rocks but in all fairness there songs are just not good. Sure they had one amazing song but the truth is when Johan Liiva sang for them they were alot better.
I hope OTEP get another chance but I hope they don't turn to the newmetal stuff.

74. writes:
f*** ALL OF YOU! How the f*** are you gonna talk sh** about otep and say angela gossow is better cuz shes hotter. WTF man. Arch enemy kicks ass, so does Otep. But f*** all you a$$holes like Otep is so ugly and blah blah b**** b****. Otep is f***ing beautifula nd truthfully she wouldn't f*** any of you.
