Devin Townsend Quits Strapping Young Lad And The Devin Townsend Band

Photo of Strapping Young Lad

Band Photo: Strapping Young Lad (?)

During a Ziltoid the Omniscient press conference, Devin Townsend has announced that his projects Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band have been put to an end, and that he will not be touring again at any point in the future. Devin will, however, continue to make and release solo music.

After the audience took the statement from Ziltoid that Devin would be moving away, never to be seen again as a joke, Townsend came forth to confirm that he is indeed moving to a remote Northern Canadian town. He said that he will continue to make music, and lots of it, some of which will be ambient, some heavy, and so on. His new house will have a studio, though he will keep his Vancouver studio which he uses to produce other bands. However, Devin will not tour to support any music he releases in the future, nor will he be appearing in public at all.

Devin stated that while his 8-month old son was a contributing factor towards this decision, he had been considering doing this for some time now, and that he is tired of being in the limelight and touring and interviews and such. He is also tired of Strapping Young Lad, with the last tour being extremely difficult for him in terms of enthusiasm. He no longer has the same frustrations SYL was created to vent, and no longer feels the need to scream at people.

I understand his stance here. SYL has produced some amazing albums, and for that alone, the guy deserves a break. He's a musical genius, and I'm sure he'll resurface once he becomes more comfortable in his life situation. At least, I hope he does. This is one of those people that metal needs around. Good luck to him, tho.

They were both absolutely amazing shows. And a little note: Devin is producing Soilwork's new album right now, definitely looking forward to that!

Devin is one of more interesting figures in metal today, and his choices are very mature and responsible. Not too many musicians choose to stop at the crest of the wave, rather than crash down and make suck music for years before they fade away. Basically the only good thing about SYL and DTB breaking up, is Gene Hoglan playing for another group. Another album with Testament, perhaps? (crossing fingers)

I don't know about Testament, but Gene Hoglan is working with Brendon Small on Dethklok. I have no idea as to what the status is on the highly anticipated Dethklok album that they have been working on together, but Brandon has gotten another deal for another full season of the show from Adult Swmi, so I can only assume the pair will keep busy on the project considering it's success and praise from metal-heads and and cartoon-enthusiasts alike.

Jomama, how is that disrepecting fans and the music he made at all? if anything its honoring them, by him stepping down and saying "hey if i continue with this its not going to be as good as it once was" hes quitting FOR the fans and FOR the music so that the fans dont become disapointed with what those bands have became, and so the awsome music he made doesn't suffer from it... but thank god SYL were around for the amount of time they were and for the awsome music that they made, hopefully a reunion would be in works in the distant future!

If Devin lives the rest of his life in non-metal bliss, then good for him if he's happy doing it. Too bad for his kid though. I wouldn't have my kids raised on anything but metal :-) Just joking - I'm sure the touring life is certainly not anything good for the kids.

I have two children and it's a pretty intense strain on morals when you're in a band with a family. I began practicing in my own garage, and that's the plan for now. It's hard to even think about touring away from my family, but I have their support, and that's a really important component in the whole thing. I understand what he's saying, but I'm also aware that Devin is known for expressing his bi-polar behavior and he says a lot of f***ed and loaded things sometimes, so I'm not ruling out a reunion in the future, but I'm also not ruling out a new SYL album in two more years. Being around your family 24/7 is awesome, but when you have a few kids, it can be one of the most stressful things you can ever live with. I wouldn't be surprised if he was p***ed enough in two years to make another album. But good luck to him anyways!

DTB didn't do much for me either but "Suicide" and "Depth Charge" from Accelerated Evolution are diamonds....Perfect songs by all of my rigid standards.

SYL ofcourse was the prime attraction for myself and most, I suppose Townsend was hoping DTB or his solo work would draw the same numbers that SYL eventually managed...not for profit so much as to be heard as more than just a mad scientist frontman for SYL.

Noone would peg Townsend as a one trick pony but few would want to feel pigeonholed.

I personally really enjoy DTB, I have most if not all their albums. Very different to SYL, but really cool music in a whole other way. Has all the soaring crescendos and the floating melodies, the heavy parts that intertwine so exquisitely with the almost spooky ambience, and all the while, it's still catchy as hell! I'm a big fan of both SYL and DTB - not sure I can say the same for this Ziltoid stuff, though. Amusing once, after that you start thinking "With that sort of musical genius, couldn't he be making something a LITTLE more involved than an alien coffee addict?"

Townsend's Ocean Machine - Biomech has some flooring songs on it. And as I said before, I love "Depth Charge" and "Suicide" off of Accelerated Evolution, I have yet to pick up Synchistra though. Anyone know how that one is as a whole, I've only heard parts of it?
Physicist sounded like a too pop, too throw back SYL. Terria is good but it took me the longest time to get into it and only a handful of tracks I liked, though the atmospherics alone are spectacular.

SYL was instant gratification, particularly "City" and "Alien".

Can't blame the guy for having priorities. It is good that he stepped away while he was still respected rather than hang around past his time. Too many good bands reps are tarnished by their later work. You hear too many people say "I liked their early stuff, after two albums they sucked." I am eager to hear his new music, especially the ambient stuff he said he may work on. I've been listening to ambient for a few months now and some of it is very interesting.
