'Little Kids Rock' - A Real Life School of Rock
Rock stars are coming out in numbers to support a "real-life" School of Rock. Little Kids Rock, an innovative non-profit that teaches low-income kids how to play and compose their own, original rock songs announced today that it will be kicking off a unique recording project this Thursday, November 20 at the fabled Plant Recording studio in Sausalito, Ca. from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The CD project, entitled "Little Kids, Big Fans: Stars United For Music Education", will feature high profile artists doing cover versions of songs written by Little Kids Rock students.
To launch the project, Tom Johnson (Doobie Brothers), JASON NEWSTED (Metallica, Ozzy Osborne), blues guitarist Roy Rogers and singer Austin Willacy will join Little Kids Rock's student songwriters for a kick-off recording session this Thursday. Other musicians on board for the project include Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel) and Kerry Livgren (Kansas).
In the coming weeks, The Manhattan Center Studios in New York City will be the site of similar sessions featuring artists from the East coast. Both The Plant and The Manhattan Center Studios are donating their time and services to the project.
"Our program is restoring music education in our public schools," says David Wish, Little Kids Rock' Executive Director and Founder. "We do this by providing children with free instruments and dedicated teachers. We also teach our kids how to write their own music. This is resonating with professional musicians and other folks in the music industry." Last month Bonnie Raitt and Tom Waits paid a visit to some Little Kids Rock classes in San Francisco last month. Former Nirvana Bassist May Run For State Office
Nirvana co-founder and bassist Krist Novoselic, who announced in August that he was fed up with the music industry, says he may run for Washington state lieutenant governor, according to the Associated Press.
Already active in Democratic party circles, Novoselic indicated he was wary about challenging two-term Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, also a Democrat and occasional rock musician, but does not want to remain on the sidelines in 2004 and has been talking to party leaders.
"I've been really contemplating how I want to get involved next year and make a contribution," Novoselic told The Seattle Times. "It's going to be a big year and I'm trying to find a way to fit into it." More...
The Black Dahlia Murder - Rocked New Jersey
The Black Dahlia Murder has checked in with this update in regards to their re-born lineup and their 'come back' show with Trevor and Dave. Here's Brian Eschbach's point of view:
"We played New Jersey Metal Fest over the weekend and it was awesome! I think all of our fans were really excited to see the real deal with Trevor and Dave. Thanks to all of the kids who came out to see us, you guys are fuckin' awesome! You are the most brutal fuckin' fans ever, you rock! Big horns to the guy with The Black Dahlia Murder logo painted on his jacket. You kick ass! I don't want to give away too much info, but we are still working on new material. I'll leave it at that."
..and now Trevor's:
"At the fest we received the biggest reaction I have witnessed while in the band. It was awesome to see so much energy in the crowd, and reaffirmed that Dave and I did indeed make the right decision. I met a lot of cool kids, and drank a lot of rum. During my rum escapade, it was brought to my attention how much Dave looks like Michael Moore now that he cut his hair. Overall, it was a fucking riot, and I hope we can be part of the bill in the future."
