Nervosa's New Lineup Makes Their British Debut

It was just over a year ago when I last saw Nervosa, during their co-headlining tour with Burning Witches. Thirteen months later and a lot has changed. Nervosa's founding guitarist Prika Amaral has now taken over the vocalist spot from Diva Satanica, while Michaela Naydenova now sits behind the drum kit, where Eleni Nota sat last time the band performed in the Underworld. Nota's departure didn't remove the Greek flavour though as Helena Kotina and Hel Pyre have now joined the ranks as lead guitarist and bassist respectively. So with all this having taken place, fans were eager to find out how this new lineup sounded.

Opening the show were two local bands, the first being Die Ego. The London trio released their latest EP, "74 Days Staring At The Void" a little under two months ago and the material sounds very strong live. The group has a very strong stage presence and comes across well, exceeding the expectations of those in attendance who admitted before the show that their studio recordings weren't to their liking. Obviously the material isn't familiar enough to me to know the setlist, though I do remember one of the songs they performed was "Consumed By Mediocrity," which was enjoyable. All in all, a promising young band with a good repertoire. More...

Nervosa Releases "Endless Ambition" Music Video

Full-speed death-thrash metal engine Nervosa are setting the metal world ablaze with their brand new song, entitled "Endless Ambition," out today! The steamrolling track is accompanied by an inexorably energetic music video and marks a new chapter and milestone in the band’s history, as it shows Nervosa with a revitalized new line-up.

Along with this blistering new offering, the marvelous force has finally lifted the veil on who will take over vocal duties on future releases. From now on, guitarist and founding member Prika Amaral will be the voice of Nervosa. "Endless Ambition" acts as a first harbinger for everything that is about to come and shows the incredibly powerful attitude and talent of Amaral ruling in this new position. Nervosa brings another novelty with the addition of the immensely talented and well experienced Michaela Naydenova on drums, Hel Pyre on bass and Helena Kotina on guitars.

Prika Amaral says about becoming vocalist:
"It was a huge challenge for me. It wasn't something I planned or expected, but after a second change of vocalist, I didn’t want to go through these changes again, so I decided to face what a lot of people have said since the beginning of Nervosa - that I should be vocalist. But, as I always heard from some people that I didn't have a technique, that the way I sang hurt my throat, I got carried away by that. Now, after studying vocal techniques for the last few months, I discovered that yes, I’ve always had the technique and feel comfortable facing this new journey, which I am enjoying a lot". More...

Nervosa Hires W.E.B. Bassist For Live Shows

Thrash metal outfit Nervosa has announced that, due to bassist Mia Wallace being unavailable at times, W.E.B. bass player Hel Pyre has joined the fold as a live bassist. A statement from the band reads as follows:

"Since Mia Winter Wallace is not available to tour and she can do just a few shows (read our last post about this to understand better).
We announce that Hel Pyre - Vocalist/Bassist will be the bass player who will play with us most of the upcoming shows.

"She is a Greek bassist, very well known and respected musician in Greece. Hel Pyre toured with King Diamond as backing vocal some years ago, she is the co-hostess at TV War (TV show by Metal Hammer Greece) and is also bassist/back vocalist of W.E.B. and singer of AfterBlood.
See below the next dates and which bass player will play with us."

The band also seemed to give a rough time for when their new vocalist would be revealed, as when a fan asked when they would make an announcement regarding the position, their Facebook account replied, "Next week."

The previously mentioned tour dates, which note which bass player will be on duty, are as follows: More...

Nervosa Introduces New Drummer

"Many things to announce next days, so don't miss it!"

Nervosa recently completed recording their fifth studio album, their first to feature Naydenova as well as second guitarist Helena Kotina and an as-yet unannounced vocalist. You can check out the first video documenting the recording below. More...

Nervosa Splits With Vocalist Diva Satanica

Brazilian thrash metal outfit Nervosa has announced that they have parted company with vocalist Diva Satanica (also of Bloodhunter.) A statement from the band reads as follows:

"Since September 2022 Nervosa was informed that Diva would leave the band, and since then she has carried out all activities with great professionalism and respect. The reason for her departure is because she chooses to invest more time in other projects and in her band. Since her decision, we entered into an agreement to comply with the Latin America tour and announce her departure later so that we could plan everything calmly and in time.

"We understand and support her decision. It's not easy for either party, but life is made of choices and decisions. So don't judge too harshly, because it's a very painful moment for both parties.

"All our respect to Diva, thank you for all her dedication and contribution. We wish you good luck on your new journey. Nervosa has been working with a vocalist for the last 2 months, and is also working with a new drummer.

"The recordings for the new album start this week, so stay tuned on our social networks because we're going to post some spoilers.

"Thanks to all the fans for their love and support.
"Nervosa will never die."

Diva Satanica has become the second member of the "Perpetual Chaos" album lineup to leave the band, following the departure of drummer Eleni Nota, whose replacement, Nanu Villalba, has also parted ways with the band since her recruitment.

Nervosa Recruits Second Guitarist

Brazilian founded thrash metal outfit Nervosa has announced that, following her tenure as live bassist on their recent tour of Latin America, Greek musician Helena Kotina has joined the band as a second guitarist, making Nervosa a quintet for the first time. A statement from the band reads as follows:

"The position will be filled by guitarist Helena Kotina. In the very beginning Nervosa consisted of two guitarists, but after the departure of Karen Ramos the band decided to stay as a trio for logistics reasons. This helped the band touring low cost for many years.

"After the complete line-up change in 2020, Prika thought of adding a second guitarist, but she decided to do it later, there were too many new members in the band to manage alone and the line-up had already moved from 3 piece to 4 piece, rising the touring costs of the band in general, so an addition of a second guitarist had to be postponed.

"Few months after the release of "Perpetual Chaos", in March of 2021, Prika called Helena to join Nervosa, since then they started composing a new album together.
At the end of 2022, Mia could not come to tour Latin America, so Prika thought of asking Helena to come to play bass and have the first touring experience with Nervosa.

"Helena Kotina is a young guitar player born and raised in Greece. She picked up the guitar at the age of 14, being her main influences on bands like Scorpions, Rainbow, Deep Purple. Her professional career started by releasing the first EP of the Greek band Daffodil called 'A hope for things that never come', in the summer of 2022 she released her first personal work called 'One of those days' and later on she toured with Nervosa as a bassist in their Latin America tour. Also by the end of the year, Helena played alongside Paul Di'Anno and Gus G in their Greek tour.
Nervosa is finishing the new songs now and very soon they are going to enter the studio to record the 5th album in Nervosa's career."

Nervosa Parts Ways With Drummer

Thrash metal quartet Nervosa has announced that they have parted company with drummer
Nahir "Nanu" Salomé Villalba. A statement from the band reads as follows:

"With this post we would like to inform our fans and followers that Nanu Villalba makes no longer part of Nervosa due to lack of common agreement. We thank her for the contribution till now and we wish the best for her future. The composition and preproduction of the album is continuing normally and we are hitting the studio in a month. Stay tuned!"

Nanu Villalba has since posted the following message on Instagram:

"As some of you might already know, I'm no longer in Nervosa. I wish I could tell you the truth about what happened but 1) I've signed a contract that doesn't allow me to talk about it and 2) it wouldn't be professional to reveal publicly the causes or reasons.

"There are no words to express how grateful I am for every single one of you who welcomed and supported me in such a short amount of time. I was really excited to retribute you for all the love you've given me so far with a killer album but I guess you'll have to wait until next time.

"THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!"

Nervosa And Burning Witches Roar Across London

Metal has come a long way when it comes to women in the genre. Where once there was hardly any women at shows or performers on stage, groundbreaking acts like Girlschool, Doro and Lita Ford gave them a voice in the field and showed that they can rock just as hard as the guys. Fast forward to 2022 and some of the best musicians and bands in metal are women, with hardly anyone batting an eye. So it was a natural choice that two of the breakout all female bands would team up at some point and treat fans to hell of a tour, which exactly what happened when the new look Nervosa paired with the Switzerland founded Burning Witches.

Having unfortunately missed the opening band and being unimpressed with Hunting Horror, we begin our review with Burning Witches. On a personal note, both bands are special to me as I was not only there for both of their British debuts (in 2015 and 2019 respectively) but also interviewed them. Three years on and both have made some big changes to their ranks, meaning this was the first time I'd seen Burning Witches with vocalist Laura Guldemond and guitarist Larissa Ernst. It's fair to say that the spirit they displayed three years ago still lives on as Burning Witches pay tribute to classic metal bands with their own brand of traditional heavy metal. More...

"During our tour we will collect some donations for the @voiceofchildren.ukraine This organization helps the children that are victims of the war. It is a very beautiful job, you can find more information in their website and you can also donate directly to them.

Destruction mastermind Schmier says: "Yes - we are super thrilled: the first tour of the new record, Diabolical, will kick off in North America! We could not tour there on the last album because of the pandemic, so we made it a top priority to return as soon as the circumstances would allow us, to play for our American fans again! We are bringing our friends Nervosa along - they are a perfect match! We toured together before and the pits were smoking! They also haven't toured in the USA or Canada in a long while. Diamond Oz Presents: The Best Of 2021

Well... This was another eventful year wasn't it!? In yet another twelve months dominated by political issues, a global pandemic, hatred, division and injustice, all the ingredients were there for metal music to have plenty to tuck into. Musically, 2021 was a solid year with some superb offerings from bands all over the world, including some wonderful debuts and returns. However, before we get to the best of the brutal, it's only right that we acknowledge those who have left us since January.

How I Wish You Were Here

Sadly, 2021 has seen some of metal's most beloved leave us. From teenage favourites to cult heroes and those who weren't on stage but still made an impact, metal was left poorer for such losses. Entombed/Entombed A.D. vocalist Lars Goran Petrov, one of Swedish death metal's most recognisable and favourite voices succumbed to bile duct cancer aged only 49 in March, with three more singers following him into the aether in June in the shapes of Skid Row's Johnny Solinger, Sven Gross of Fleshcrawl and John Lawton of Lucifer's Friend/Uriah Heep. Only a month later, former Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison, himself an inspiration for so many of today's young drummers, passed away at the age of 46. The COVID-19 virus also claimed a legend in former Trouble singer Eric Wagner, who died at 62, just before a scheduled tour with his band, The Skull.

As sad as death always is, some felt particularly tragic this year, including the suicide of ex Metal Church singer Mike Howe, who initially spent eight years with the band between the eighties and nineties, before returning to the fold in 2015, recording two more studio albums with the seminal group. The metal world was also affected by terrorism, when vocalist Andrea Haugen was killed in the Kongsberg this past October.

Behind the stage, some of our most important figures would also pass on, including Malcolm Dome, the British journalist credited with coining the term "thrash metal," who was a walking encyclopedia of metal knowledge, appearing in numerous documentaries and penning several books on some of metal and rock's greatest icons. Early on in the year, we also said goodbye to Megaforce co-founder Marsha Zazula, who was responsible for signing so many of the most revered names in thrash, as well as Mick Rock, an iconic photographer who captured some of the best shots of such names as Ozzy, Motley Crue and Thin Lizzy to name a few.
