Download Festival Announces First Sixty Bands

The organisers of Britain's Download festival have announced the first sixty bands to play at the event's twentieth anniversary next year. Of note, Metallica will be performing two headlining sets, while the other headliners will be Slipknot and Bring Me The Horizon. A statement from Metallica reads as follows:

"Open up the summer calendar as we’re super excited to announce that we’ll be celebrating the Download Festival’s 20th anniversary with not one, but two headline nights on June 8 and 10, 2023! It's been over a decade since we hit the stage in Donington Park, so we’ll be making up for lost time with two unique and completely different setlists with no repeat songs whatsoever that weekend.

"This year’s festival will take place over four days and we’re lucky enough to start the party on night one, June 8th. Hitting the stage as headliners the other two nights are Slipknot and Bring Me The Horizon. The long weekend will be jam-packed including Evanescence, Parkway Drive, Disturbed, Pendulum, Architects, Ghost, The Distillers, Placebo, Alexisonfire, Asking Alexandria, Motionless In White, I Prevail, The Blackout (reunion), Fever 333, Stray From The Path, Lorna Shore, Nova Twins and Municipal Waste, with many more still to be announced.

"Fifth Members may purchase tickets now. General tickets are on-sale at 10 AM on Thursday, November 10th."

Municipal Waste Debuts "Electrified Brain" Video

Richmond's hard-charging, thrash metal maniacs Municipal Waste have debuted the title track from their massively-anticipated 7th studio album, "Electrified Brain," that's due out July 1st via Nuclear Blast. Their third single, "Electrified Brain" arrives in the grotesque form of a face-melting horror short directed by esteemed FX artist Norman Cabrera (From Dusk Till Dawn, The Walking Dead, Kill Bill).

Commenting on the new single and video, guitarist Ryan Waste says:

"'Electrified Brain' is a tale of revenge and redemption, continuing the concept of our song ‘Mental Shock’ rounding out the ‘Deathripper Trilogy.’ It’s about being wrongfully accused and stripped of your rights, only to overcome and break free through the electric power of heavy music. We called upon our friend Norman Cabrera once again to handle the title track music video after the incredible job he did on ‘Slime and Punishment.’ Visually he went above and beyond and it became a much more cinematic experience thanks to Rob Lucas at Wolfpack Studios."

Norman Cabrera adds about making the video:

"I pulled out all the stops for this video. It's in the spirit of classic Heavy Metal videos like Ozzy's 'Bark at the Moon' and Dio's 'The Last in Line.' Sci Fi-Horror imagery lends itself very well to the vibe of the band. We’re channeling a bit of Cronenberg and Carpenter. The best sci fi movies of the past often take current events and put them in a fantastic setting. The video takes place in a not so distant dystopian future where your individuality can be taken away by a faceless organization. It’s a wild concept but not too far off from our world today." Commenting on the single, guitarist Ryan Waste says:

“'High Speed Steel' is our ode to an era when heavy metal was transitioning into a faster form. We pushed the limits of our sound to channel that classic dynamic and keep the intensity high. It’s about overcoming the pressure and slicing down the odds when everything is stacked against you.” More...

Municipal Waste Re-Signs With Nuclear Blast

Waste and Nuclear Blast have officially re-signed a worldwide deal that will extend the Nuclear-Waste union for years to come. To date, the co-conspirators' partnership has spawned some of the best crossover thrash of the last 20 years with 2 studio records, 2012's "The Fatal Feast" and 2017's "Slime And Punishment," and an EP, 2019's "The Last Rager," and they're only getting started! The band recently wrapped work on their eagerly awaited, 7th full-length album that's scheduled to be unleashed in 2022. Further details to be unveiled in the coming months.

The band comments on the re-signing:

"When we were asked about re-signing to Nuclear Blast only 2 words came to mind… no brainer! Having such a long history with an amazing label that’s been nothing but supportive made it an easy decision on our part. Looking forward to many records and even more years with The Blast!!! And an extra special thanks to everyone in the warehouse and offices all over for agreeing to stick it out with us for the years to come. Cheers NB and the Waste!" Tony Foresta (vocals)

"We couldn’t think of a more suitable place for the Waste than our radioactive family at Nuclear Blast. They’ve always given us complete creative freedom and challenged us to push it to the limit with our deranged ideas. As the music business changes with the times, we trust that our vision remains unfazed by trends and our label backs us up with full force." Ryan Waste (guitarist) More...

SOIA And Napalm Death Demonstrate Persistence

In an age where Summer festivals dominate, it's nice to have something to look forward to in the Winter as well. While many fans of hardcore will find their most renowned names playing big metal festivals, the Persistence Tour has, since 2005, offered European fans of the genre a great night out in the form of a massive, travelling matinee. This year saw New York hardcore legends Sick Of It All headline the trek once again, having previously taken part in the event four times, being joined by crossover thrash favourites Municipal Waste, Detroit metalcore outfit Walls Of Jericho and for one night only, grindcore godfathers, Napalm Death.

Having been unable to catch the opening two bands (Siberian Meat Grinder and Take Offence,) due to interviews with Napalm Death and Municipal Waste (watch this space,) my first live act for the day was Oi! outfit Booze & Glory. What makes this band very very special is what they stand for. Booze & Glory were formed by two Polish immigrants and over the years their ranks have included people from other countries such as Greece and Sweden, while the English members are themselves descended from immigrants. This background, combined with their love of traditional skinhead and British culture is one of the best slaps to the face of racism and xenophobia, showing the world that we can embrace each other while remaining true to our heritage and cultures. As for the music itself, it was a lot of fun. Booze & Glory offer a good time, in a similar vein to Dropkick Murphys, plenty of sing along anthems and a fierce stage presence. Frankly their studio output doesn't do them justice and I urge all fans of punk, hardcore, Oi! and the skinhead subculture to seek out a live show soon. Superb! More...

Hatebreed Announces 25th Anniversary Tour

Hatebreed remain one of the most relevant and impactful acts in the hard rock and metal scenes. The Connecticut band will celebrate 25 years of ruthless breakdowns, pit-stirring anthems, and poignant lyrics across eight albums and consistently sold-out shows in 2019. The band, which has gone from playing basements and backyards to being a featured worldwide attraction on countless festivals and high-profile tours from OZZFest to Warped Tour to Download, will commemorate two-plus decades by embarking on a 25th anniversary tour.

The first leg of the tour will feature support from Obituary and Cro-Mags, two bands that Hatebreed have covered in their career and who have influenced the signature and instantly recognizable Hatebreed sound. Terror and Fit for an Autopsy will round out this "can't miss" juggernaut of a lineup. The initial trek will kick off in Philadelphia in April, with an additional leg to be announced shortly. All confirmed dates are below.

"I can't believe it's been 25 years already," said Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta. "We're excited to bring out this massive tour package with some of our favorite bands.
