Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Metallica's "Death Magnetic" held on to the No. 1 spot on The Billboard 200 for a second week after its first full sales week on the charts, beating out Ne-Yo and Nelly. "Death Magnetic" sold 337,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan; it debuted with 490,000 last week after just three days of sales thanks to an off-cycle Friday release.
In the U.K., Metallica beat out Kings Of Leon, Ne-Yo and Queen + Paul Rodgers to stay atop the new U.K. sales charts released on September 21.
Metallica was also held the number 1 spot in Canada and 26 other countries around the world.

Metallica Nominated For Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame
In what should come as no surprise to anyone, Metallica has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Here's what the band had to say:
"We're honored to be among the nine nominees being considered for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... has it really been 25 years since our first record came out? Yeah, that's the criteria to be nominated and we're keeping company this year with Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Run D.M.C., the Stooges, War, and Bobby Womack."
"Of course we don't know yet if we're really in... the official inductees for this year are not announced until January 2009. So as we always say, keep watching here for more info. The big ceremony will be held April 4, 2009 in Cleveland."

More #1 Chart Positions For "Death Magnetic"
As previously reported, Metallica made history by becoming the first band to have five albums debut at No. 1 with their release of "Death Magnetic." (Other albums in this record include 1991's Metallica (known as The Black Album), 1996's Load, 1997's ReLoad, and 2003's St. Anger.
"Death Magnetic" also scored big around the world with No. 1 debuts Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, New Zealand, Norway (who sold more albums in 2 days than a week’s sales of a new U2 album), Poland, Portugal, Sweden (their biggest 1st week sales in 2008), and Turkey (which doesn’t have an official chart but the album was No. 1 on every retail chart). More No. 1 rankings are expected this weekend as remaining charts roll in. More...
Metallica Becomes First Band To Achieve 5 #1s
Metallica has apparantly made Billboard history by becoming the first band to have five consecutive albums reach the number one spot on the Billboard 200 with their latest effort, "Death Magnetic." The band previously was on par with U2, The Beatles and The Dave Matthews Band, all achieving four number one albums.
Metallica To Tour With Scorpions?
Legendary photographer Ross Halfin has posted the following message at his website:
"It's been a Metallica weekend - kind of. Shot Metallica rehearsing new songs on the 02 stage for an hour. Then did a studio set up and got all the band to do photos. Of course Lars says while standing posing 'This isn't on the schedule.' Me: 'So?' He does what he's told. I got a lot done - I know I say this but I did, particularly of James. I gave him the new cover of Burrn! which I like (shot in LA) and Kirk was over the moon with Classic Rock's photos of him and THE SCORPIONS. He's talking to the band about doing a co-headline tour. Did some more of them warming up then shot the show. Hated the set list, found it boring - no 'Four Horsemen', 'Creeping Death', 'Damage Inc.' You get the new songs (fair enough with a new CD) but the rest of it I found a yawnfest - 'Wolf To Man', 'One' (never liked the song), 'Frantic', plus playing in the round there were so many monitors and veri-lights along the front of the stage you were looking up their noses. Walked onstage at the end and got them kicking huge black Metallica balls. I didn't get into it as I hadn't seen the show with new lights etc."
Metallica's "Death Magnetic" A Lock To Top Charts
Billboard.com reports: A title missing from last week's Nielsen SoundScan Building charts is destined to be the next No. 1 on The Billboard 200, as Metallica's new "Death Magnetic" has a shot at a half-million copy opener.
The band's first album through Warner Bros. was absent from SoundScan's interim charts because of its off-cycle Friday street date of September 12, which was chosen in order to accommodate a global release date. SoundScan's Friday Building chart reflects sales from nine leading accounts through close of business on Thursday.
Informed sources estimate "Death Magnetic" will start in the neighborhood of 450,000-500,000 copies, with one unpredictable variable being a ticket/album bundle offered by Ticketmaster. The album was also packaged with "Guitar Hero" at Best Buy, sold through "Guitar Hero" platforms Xbox and Playstation and packaged with a Metallica-branded set of headphones by Skull Candy.

"Death Magnetic" received an early release in the United Kingdom, coming out on Wednesday the 10th instead of the planned date of Friday the 12th. Ulrich On Expectations to Save Metal
From Blabbermouth:
Stevie Chick of The Guardian conducted an interview with METALLICA at the end of August when the band was in the UK to play the Reading festival. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
On how long they will be able to continue as METALLICA:
Lars Ulrich (drums): "In the immortal words of Noel Gallagher, I'm gonna live forever. [That's] the $64,000 question. THE ROLLING STONES are setting a great precedent, but Charlie Watts doesn't play drums on songs like 'Fight Fire With Fire' every night, no disrespect. Will we be able to play the shit we do when we're 65? I don't know. When it becomes a joke, we'll stop."
On the widely panned 2003 album "St. Anger":
James Hetfield: "'St Anger' happened because it had to happen. It sounds very disjointed to me when I listen to it now. One-dimensional. Relentless. And that's exactly how we felt at the time: we were disjointed, and I think the resentment we felt towards each other was relentless."
On politics:
James Hetfield: "METALLICA has really tried to be non-political, as much as possible. I write about the human side of it all. I really dislike it when celebrities get up on a soapbox and start giving their opinion. It shouldn't be more valid, because you're popular. It gets in the way of the music. I like to just live, and think, and feel. Politics bore me. Politics separate people, especially where we're from. Politics rarely bring people together."
On not being the same people as they were when they recorded "Master of Puppets":
Lars Ulrich: "I'm 44 years old, I've got three kids, I flew in a helicopter on Friday. It's a little difficult to revisit the vibe of 20 years ago when you're living in a two-bedroom suite at Claridge's. I live a very different life to how I lived then."
On the level of expectation METALLICA still command:
Lars Ulrich: "I was thinking the other day about how everyone expects us to continue to release albums that define the genre, to 'save' metal. And that's a lot of fucking pressure, really. Why hasn't anyone dethroned us yet? We support all the great new metal bands, take them under our wing, but people still want us to carry the whole genre on our backs."
