Band Photo: Metallica (?)
From: San Francisco, CA, United States
Last Known Status: Active
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Last week a Metallica tribute band titled Sandman posted online about receiving a cease and desist letter for using the band's logo during live shows.
The story went viral, with the usual Lars/Napster comments dominating any given story or social media post, but as it turns out, Metallica was unaware of the legal action - and has both rescinded the cease and desist and fired the lawyer responsible!
The band has now checked in with Rollingstone.com to discuss the situation. An excerpt from the story follows.
"We hear that a Canadian Metallica tribute band is a little upset with us and with a little digging, figured out why," the band tells Rolling Stone. "It turns out that a certain letter was delivered to the band Sandman that neither we nor our management were aware of until it surfaced online. Lucky for us, the band was kind enough to post it for us to see, and it turns out that we have a very overzealous attorney who sent this letter without our knowledge."More...

Earlier this month, Jabberjaw Media announced the addition of The MetalSucks Podcast, featuring hosts Chuck and Godless. The podcast has recorded well over 100 episodes since its formation over two years ago. The duo just unveiled a special episode with Kirk Hammett of Metallica, where they dive into the importance of measuring one's success and some unique projects he is working on now.
As the podcast episode unravels the audience quickly learns that Kirk Hammett is not all about the fame and added perks it brings. Rather he measures his success by the music he produces. He explains how he quickly learned that just being a musician would not fulfill all of life's happiness, and would need to set out to find other avenues to reach this feeling. He expanded on how other members started tackling their "life outside of Metallica" and wanted to join the movement. Listen to the full podcast right here.
Late last month, Hammett alongside industry vet David Karon unveiled their latest venture, the Ghoul Screamer guitar pedal. Hammett credits his awkward teen years and upbringing as giving him the necessary drive and will to take his dreams one step further and states that building a good infrastructure is the key to life.Hammett and the rest of Metallica are currently in the studio working on new music.
Earlier this year, Metallica's Kirk Hammett passed NYC trio Meek Is Murder some very nice words via mutual friend Jose Mangin of Sirius XM Liquid Metal.
Today is Kirk Hammett's birthday and, in celebration, Meek Is Murder has released a raw rendition of Metallica's 1988 banger, "Blackened."
In true MIM form, the cover clocks in at under two minutes, while still paying homage to the original favorite. The song was recorded at Spaceman Sound in Brooklyn, NY, with Tom Tierney and Alex Mead-Fox.
Members of Metallica, Pantera, In Flames, Testament, AC/DC, Kiss, Slipknot, Mötley Crüe, Slash, Warbringer, Aborted, Periphery, Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red, Raising The Veil, Born Of Osiris, All Shall Perish, Carnifex, Textures and Anthrax etc. are among the musicians who have (so far) reacted with shock and pledges of solidarity for France following the killing of scores of people in attacks in Paris on Friday night. Some of their views can be seen below.

I dare you to put this track on in a car and not get pulled over for speeding. This track not only opened so many doors for the band, it blew them right off the hinges. All hail the kings."
Vanna's new EP also features covers from Marilyn Manson, The Offspring, The Smashing Pumpkins and Korn. Catch the band performing tracks from the record on these upcoming tour dates:
