Metallica Nominated for Induction Into The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame

Photo of Metallica

Band Photo: Metallica (?)

In what should come as no surprise to anyone, Metallica has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Here's what the band had to say:

"We're honored to be among the nine nominees being considered for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... has it really been 25 years since our first record came out? Yeah, that's the criteria to be nominated and we're keeping company this year with Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Run D.M.C., the Stooges, War, and Bobby Womack."

"Of course we don't know yet if we're really in... the official inductees for this year are not announced until January 2009. So as we always say, keep watching here for more info. The big ceremony will be held April 4, 2009 in Cleveland."

As for Metallica, I think they deserve it: they've made their mark on the metal genre for sure ! Just think, The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame without Metallica would just be absurd in my opinion, considering their history of being one of the most legendary bands... GO METALLICA :)

I personally think Metallica doesn't deserve this, not at all. They wrote Stairway to Heaven, big deal, the rest of their music was total sh**. They haven't written anything since then worth listening to. I think some REAL bands should be nominated for the Hall of Fame, like AVENGED SEVENFOLD. Now there's a band that's written tons of really excellent music.

A sellout is someone who has defined a genre of music only to find their income in the millions of dollars rather than in the hundreds of millions of dollars. And in order to live like hollywod divas they switch to a radio-friendly commercial sound that sounds like every other shallow band at the time just for the purpose of making more money. And to promote it the new softer sound they all cut their hair at the same time!? Come one--we all know sellouts when we see them.

Thrower, you've got your math equations mixed up bad!! Are you really saying that TO BE A SELL OUT MEANS A BANDS NET WORTH STAYS IN THE MILLIONS, BUT NOT IN THE HUNDRED MILLIONS?? I wanna know how old are you dude? Theres no way you are old enough to understand the type of money a band like Metallica would have. First of all there aint no other band in the world that sounds like Metallica. Theres no denying metallica are wealthy beyond most of our imagination. Heres a realistic example for you: A typical US arena will seat between 15 to 20 thousand people. Lets say for the first leg of the upcoming north american tour they average 17,000 per gig. Let's say the tickets are $45 ea. Thats:765,000$$ every gig @ about 4 gigs a week. Now for those 4 gigs in tickets alone heres the total:3,060,000. Lets say the do 50 dates, easy to do since they'll do a second leg after christmas now you're looking at:38,250.000!! Keep in mind these guys have a massive payroll and none of these figures include the sales online or retail. In addition to buying jet fuel in this curret economy. Also don't forget about the countless european gigs that average 40 to 60 thousand each!! Even after that they have an incredible payday!! There paid this type of money because people love what they do. My point is, Im sure Metallica are definitely worth hundreds of millions of dollars!! Does that make them a sell out, hell no. Metallica changed with the times on there own terms why you can't see that is beyond understanding!! Dude they've been rich for along time now..who the hell cares!!

No, it's usually more along the lines of "They make hundreds of millions BECAUSE they're sell-outs."

They changed their sound drastically on the black album, making it slower, and more accessable to the majority, and ever since then, they've hit no.1 on the charts every time. the majority of their fans these days are Soccer moms and people who like Green Day. the fans of their first four albums, which were such masterpieces that they demanded that Metallica rise to the point that they COULD make a chart-topping album, have nothing to do with soccer moms and sneer at people who like Green Day.

Do you see why so many old-school fans say they sold-out? Because they did, and they just now realized it, which is why they made Death Magnetic, to try and reach out to those abandoned fans, while keeping the new ones that give them so much money. :p

Garage Days is a Masterpiece, since were naming masterpieces!! You're on crack saying soccer moms like metallica now! The sound of a heavily distorted guitars are still an aquired taste. Soccer moms aren't out here seeking riffs and crunchy guitar based music. Who are you dopes that write this stuff?? I'm 36 and I can still remember riding my bike to the mall to just to buy a blank cassette so I could record a live Zrock concert back in 1989. I didn't have the cash to go, but I enjoyed the show likeI was there. Or how about the goose bumps I got when I first heard the intro to sandman. Knowing that just that the song was just a great song. Tempo does not determine a great song. For those of you who know better this band has always been a live band first. They're players first recording artists second. We all have our favorite metallica songs and moments. It's been over 25 years now!! Why are some of you still holding on to a few years and a few cd's??? Metallica has an entire discography to be proudof not just one or two cd's Real fans have stayed with this band through it all.Death Magnetic is the new Metallica album...Not an ode to the past its Death Magnetic!! Not Master, Not Ride, Not Kill!!! If you're calling yourself a fan of this band based on a few moments in time you're the sellout!! Why in the hell would we want the same Metallica 28 years later.....? They're something unique and lovable about everything they have released . REAL SUPPORTERS OF THIS BAND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN. FOR YOU YOUNGER FANS LET ME APOLOGIZE TO YOU FOR NOT HAVING A CURRENT ERA BAND TO LOOK UP TO. THERE AREN'T MANY REALLY GOOD ONES..SURELY NOTHING AS GOOD AS PANTERA OR METALLICA.

I think you just proved my point except that Metallica changed for the money, and not on their own terms.

Here's the definition of sellout from dictionary.com:
Informal. a person who compromises his or her personal values, integrity, talent, or the like, for money or personal advancement.

I'm not saying they don't have a lot of fans, and they deserve all the commercial fans that they can get, I'm just saying they epitomize the term "sellout".

There is nothing I've ever seen or heard that would indicate to me metallica sole mission was to get biggger than slayer, anthrax, and megadeth combined. Wheres your respect for the tunes man? None of the bans I just mention have a fade to black in there catalog. Maybe a slow song similar to it but its the music that will always set this band apart from the rest. Haha! This has been a good chat. I definitely love to hate on Metallica and I have every reason to. For several years they must have had at least 50% of the airplay on my stereo and I counted down the days until the Black album came out. Well, it didn't get much airplay on my stereo but it didn't need to since every radio station was playing the hell out of it.

Anyway here's a funny Metallica story--I had a coworker from the backwater parts of Georgia and I loaned him my Ride The Lightning tape. He brought it back a few days later and said when he started playing it his wife looked at the stereo and said, "I think it's broken." Haha! You know it's true metal when the uninitiated think the stereo is broken!

A second not-so-funny but very telling story--I had another coworker that liked all kinds of music, and said he liked metal but he clearly preferred rap. We were going to lunch and I was fishing through my tapes and I asked him if he liked Metallica. He said he did so I put Ride The Lightning on and after the acoustic intro to Fight Fire With Fire finished and the real stuff started, he said, "This doesn't sound like Metallica." I said, "Yeah, this was before they sucked."

Anyway, you go ahead and enjoy the post-Justice stuff. I choose to live in the past.

Metalm1ke, You must first understand how this Hall of fame works. The band or musician in question must first be nominated for induction. Obviously these people aren't everyday fans like you or me. To qualify you've had to been around 25 plus years since your first official recording. Both Maiden and Priest will eventually go in. to my understanding Most if not all "credible" longt time acts will be there. So calm dowm dude! It's going to happen. Even Sabbath were eligible and snubbed for like eight years before they finally got in. Hope this helps you.

Sabbath is one of the most overrated bands of all time, Judas priest and Maiden are the gods of metal. I honestly dont want them added to the Hall of Fame, after MJ, Madonna, and other bullsh** acts. Priest and Maiden shouldnt be in a list full of pathetic acts, in my honest opinion.

I don't follow the RnR Hall of Fame as closely as the NFL Hall of Fame but I know the NFL Hall of Fame to be a total joke. It all comes down to whether or not you are liked by the voters. For the NFL, the voters are the sportswriters. WTF?! Dorky journalists deciding on the merits of athletes?! Induction should come from those already in the halls, not from journalists and media-types. So who better to decide upon musicians' merits than fellow musicians, and upon athletes' merits than fellow athletes?

Um, Sabbath overrated? Never. If it weren't for Sabbath, there would be no Priest or Maiden, at least not in the form that we know them to be.

One last Metallica story. Yet another coworker and I got into a discussion about music sometime around 1990 and I said, "Metallica is the greatest musical entity out right now." That brought some chuckles. I didn't say it to be funny and it turned out to be prophetic in a way I had never imagined. By the end of the next year, the Black album proved me true but not in the way I intended. The entire world became instant Metallica fans, and also "metal" fans.

Dude, if it weren't for Sabbath, there might be hard rock, and probably the stuff your preacher and prude friends term "acid rock." But what we've come to love about metal might still be waiting to arrive had it not been for Sabbath. Bands would still be trying different distortons on 7th chords and different arrangements on those worthless 3 guitar strings making it all sound like distorted space rock. It took an injured Tony Iommi to perfect the simple heavy crunch of the power chord from which everything metal has followed. You may not like Sabbath as much as other bands (I don't either), but these other bands could never get as heavy of a sound without Sabbath. Sabbath is the root of all evil, or at least the root of all heavy!

Power for the ages--Sabbath, Maiden, Trouble, Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Testament, Exodus, Bolt Thrower, High on Fire

So long as they aren't inducted on account of their albums circa the Black Album (Death Magnetic isn't all that impressive) I support it.

Wait a minute...Slayer has been around just as long as Metallica, I'd put Slayer in that hall of fame before Metallica.

WHY ISN'T SLAYER BEING CONSIDERED!? THEY'RE BETTER ANYWAY! While I'm at it, WHERE IS TESTAMENT IN THE MIX!? They're a better Metallica anyway!

Christf***er, I completely understand your love Slayer and Teastament. What so many of you seem to not get is, this not the Metal Hall of Fame. The inductees are usually a mixture of genres from a particular qualifying period. Like I said earlier Sabbath were nominated at least seven or eight times before they finally got in. Keep in mind, the hall of fame people are still playing catch up! I'm not sure if certan bands may never make it because of a lack luster financial success or not having a large undeniable batch or recordings. It seems to me the financial success of this band is very reason many of you don't approve of Metallica getting in. You tell me, you've been a band for at about 27 years now! You've recorded for 25 years of those 27. You've played almost everywhere including every state in the USA!! Survived both member changes and the death of an original member. So in exchange for all of this work, because anyone who thinks this band hasn't worked its azz off is a total fool. The music brought the masses to them, never the other way around. The black album was not the cause of Metallica blowing up. It's simply an awsome recording!! They earned every single cent of estimated hundred million cd's sold to date. Metallica built Metallica with the music. The people, popularity and money followed. The songs along with the live performances did it all. There is no other theoery for this. If any of us did anything for nearly 30 years, we would all expect to be completely different 30years later. Denying this band any form credit for all they've accomplished would be equal to you denying your mom physically had you! So don't tell me, you believe all honor goes to dad??? Throw your computer away! This is a closed subject to all who hate the truth. Metallica the best alway's!! Liars, Losers and Haters...NEVER!

Obviously you guy's just don't get it. The rock hall is an honor given for an entire body of work. This the ultimate honor for any band or musician to receive. It honor's evrything an artist has done and been in excess of a 25 year period or beyond. Even if it takes Slayer a little longer to get in eventually they will. I'm spent!! Theres just no respect left in this world.
Terminator, if you believe the Black album is really the only reason why Metallica was nominated this time around, it just tells me and others who know better, you know nothing.

yeah, we'll see if slayer even gets a nomination to be inducted. i would be very surprised if they were ever inducted. but i honestly dont care about the R&R hall of fame. its incredibly meaningless and based soley on numeric figures.

Even though i just got into this band in January, i still agree with vo. in my opinion, they write music based on there current attitude and the black album is just the maker of when there music matured beyond the old style. if it had stayed the same, then after a while people would stop listening. just look at almost all modern bands. LEts take disturbed for example. there style hasn't changed since belive and there record sales have dropped because of it. Metallica's music style shouldn't be bassed off of just there first four album. that is one of the reasons i love them. the music vareies so much that you won't ever get tired of listening to them. i hope they.

Achozen, thank you for having a real understanding of what this nomination means. We should all be so proud of this band. My only hope is that they include Jason in the show. As well as someone from the Cliff Burton family. I believe these two are permanent members of this great band. Dave Mustaine wouldn't qualify because he just simply was not there long enough to validate a mention.

No the bit about his bass being turned down on the album is true. And they would "forget" to wake him up for practice and sometimes hide his sh**; things like that. After Cliff died everybody in Metallica just kinda lashed out unconsciously at their new bass player. I've read it in interviews from different books and magazines before, it's not just Wikipedia.

Likewise, K. In all of my post's I emphasize the respect that seems to be lacking from a few individuals on here. It's great that we still have a Metallica to honor and talk about!! Again, I really hope Jason will be included in this honor because his presence would be greatly appreciated. Not only did he help cement the band after losing Cliff but he was one bad a$$ player in this band! Maybe this induction can make up for the classless disrespect Van Halen showed us when Eddie, Alex and dave decided to not show up! That was terrible!! Metallica must show Jason some love on that night. If they don't it will be probably the lowest moment next to losing Cliff in tragedy.

I agree, Jason needs to be included. I was debating whether Dave Mustaine should be included or not, considering that he did write some of the material on Kill Em All, but he was kicked out before it was released. I think that if he shows up, great, if not, oh well, no skin off my back. Still, I think it's great that Metallica gets to have the chance to go in after all their hard work. Long live Metallica.
