Metallica Becomes First Band To Achieve Five Number One Albums

Band Photo: Metallica (?)
Metallica has apparantly made Billboard history by becoming the first band to have five consecutive albums reach the number one spot on the Billboard 200 with their latest effort, "Death Magnetic." The band previously was on par with U2, The Beatles and The Dave Matthews Band, all achieving four number one albums.

Congrats. to Metallica 490,000 units for Death Magnetic in just 3 days?..that's impressive.
I just did some research and it looks like U2 will be joining Metallica for 5 straight albums at No. 1 when they release their new album supposedly called "No Line On The Horizon" in Jan./Feb. 2009...their last album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb released in November 2004 sold 840,000 copies in the first week of sales in the U.S. ...so their new album will almost certainly open at #1 when it comes out.

i love creating the debate with people who are unfamiliar with Metallica (parents etc) that Metallica is the biggest band in the world still creating music.
Then again Black Ice is soon to be released, so that ruins my debate for any person who is aware of it..

I heard the album...meh.
It sounds like The black Album trying to be thrash but failing...
That having been said, I do like some of the songs on it. The Judas song is kinda kickass, so is "All nightmare long" I think it's called(?) but other than that, it was just kinda almost a teeny-bit sorta not-quite-there but still a little ok.
So I truthfully like the album, but...I think it's sort of like if you starved a man in the desert for 6 days, and you fed him rotting carrion afterwards, he would tel you it was delicious? That's the feeling I get whenever I try and say that this album is good. :p

its easy to say this is the best material since the black album but im still not totally convinced on this album. i relate this to being a kid and playing with all your favorite toys. at some point you grow out of it. well in 1996 i grew out of listening to metallica and theyve been putting out sh** since then. death magnetic is way too long and all over the place. they tried too hard to sound intricate. i will always like megadeth more cuz mustaine has written better quality albums and hes never really gotten close to #1. 1 is overrated.

Ride the lightning, master of puppets and AJFA, i dont think mustaine has ever written anything near the quality of those 3 albums and im a megadeth fan. his participation in Kill 'em all is probably better than anything he has written in megadeth, well maybe on par with Rust in peace! then again, thats just my opinion.

waht is all the fuss of metallica being on SAME chart as sleezy ..coldplay or britney spears.....
i am fan and dont count how many albums metallica sold and dont care about some trendy
music chart ...that is place for commercial garbage like coldplay or maddona not metallica.........
death magnetic is not good as old albums in terms of quality and songwriting but at least
metallica are on good way...going back to the thrash metal ....i hope next album will be
more varied in rytham guitar section...and yes more thrash metal.
james finally get his mistakes like reload , load...and after all death magnetic proves that
becuse dm is more metal and less like commercial load to get more money and less
commercial image like armani in load booklet instead lyrics.
true to yourself is not childish..being true is waht who you relly are no matter how old are you
in metallica case throw out ideas like load..and stick with stuff you know best like
playing metal in dm at least it is far better than last 3 albums or how to get
more money and lose half of fans.....and get the fans who dont like metal
and watch mtv all day..
COMMENTS ON THIS PLEASE......

i couldn't agree more, i think.
like them or not, i think metallica deserves credit for what they've accomplished over the 25 years they've been around. sure, they went to #1 cos they're metallica, but when u2's new one comes out it'll be #1 cos they're u2, but really, who gives a f*** about what the charts say? i'd love to see the day when a black metal band reach #1 on the charts. what would happen? i doubt it will ever happen, but i would like to see the reactions of the world and the die-hard black metal fans when a black metal band becomes popular.
i think i've reached a conclusion...

i agree red i don't get it either. i thought metal albums were supposed to be loud...i that's not what you're talking about then i missed the mark, but there have been a lot of people that have b****ed about the loudness of the recordings, to that i ask, who gives a f***?!

27. writes:
well you can say they don't deserve to be #1, but then who does? to me the charts represent which sh**ty pop group or rapper has paid off enough people to be #1. i don't really give a sh** about the charts, more than half the music i listen to has never made it on them, but i'm still listening to it, who gives a damn if your taste in music is trendy or not?! nobody on this site i hope...but fair enough give credit where credit is due, metallica have been around for ages and they've done more than any of us have ever done....

Seriously now I realize how much we are difficult on Metallica borderline not fair at all. I mean I was frustrated with Load, Reload and St-Anger but that last album is pretty good. It's far from being their best but it's far from being their worst. I think you guys wanted them to top Master, Ride, Kill em all or the likes but it's not gonna happen. I am happy with the last album.
But you guys say : the sound sucks (wtf it doesn't), the album sucks (it doesn't, really, but if you wanted the best ever of course you are going to be disappointed

The fact is Red. They didn't record it properly. It just sounds bad compared to previous recordings. Other than that, the album is fantastic. Except for of course, Kirk's Solo's. Quite possibly the biggest joke of all time. Maybe its because I listened to it right after Zero Order Phase. Wait. No. The solo's are just bad. Plain and simple.

I think the Death Magnetic is pretty good, actually. And 5 ones is pretty impressive. Seems that many bands these days cant keep it together enough to produce 5albums in total, so all the better for Metallica. U2 will definitely reach the 5 in early 2009, which is pretty amazing since their last good - or decent - album was released in 1991

Everyone wants to complain about the price of CD's and now your complaining about them selling their CD for 5 bucks.
Lets just be Happy it isn't some rapper on the #1 spot. It is just Kicka$$ to know rock,Metal, whatever you prefer is still alive and kicking.

that could be due in part to the fact that they sold their new album for 5 bucks the first day it was released. however, the new one is much better than anything they have released recently and its nice to see that rick rubin had an impact on the content of the new album. lars still blows but they are one of the forefathers of modern metal and thrash. tough to say anything negative about them considering their back catalog. good for them. i will still go to see them anytime i get a chance.. although i saw testament about a month ago and i dont think metallica can top that show. they were sick
