Label Says Fear Factory Is On The Right Track
Just two weeks after the release of "Transgression", FEAR FACTORY and Calvin Records say that they are "right on track" for achieving long-term sales goals. First-week results found the album ranked #3 on active rock's "most added" list, 36 on iTunes' download list, and 45th overall on The Billboard 200 chart.
"We are exactly where we planned to be at this point in the campaign," said Catain. "We came out of the box strong and we plan on continuing this success with a strategic sales and marketing program that will achieve our long-term goals. Too many artists come out blazing their first week then flounder in the subsequent weeks; our objective from the get-go with this album was to build momentum throughout the entire campaign."
One of the ways that they plan to achieve this is through several comprehensive programs like their value-added retail campaign that offers each market- segment tools to keep sales moving throughout the coming weeks. Mass merchants were offered special pricing for their consumers and the "big box" stores received exclusive content like unreleased songs and competitive pricing for their shoppers. The chain stores were given value added items like signed booklets and posters while the independents were offered a bonus CD and FEAR FACTORY apparel.
Calvin Records also turned to several online initiatives like offering consumers who purchased the CD version of "Transgression" exclusive video and audio content via a secret website only accessible by inserting the CD into a computer connected to the Internet to enhance product sales.
"Transgression" was released August 23 through Calvin Records, an imprint of Liquid 8 designed just for the band and other upcoming metal acts. The record, which has sold 26,000 copies in the United States so far (according to Nielsen SoundScan), includes 11 songs, all produced by Toby Wright (ALICE IN CHAINS, KORN, METALLICA). FEAR FACTORY's last CD, "Archetype", sold 32,000 copies in its first week of release back in April 2004 to enter the Billboard chart at No. 30.
KoRn Reported To Make 15Million w/ New Record Deal
According to a report published in today's edition of the Los Angeles Times, KORN's newly announced deal with the EMI Group calls for EMI to pay the four-member band an estimated $15 million upfront — more than twice what the band might expect from a traditional recording contract. In return, EMI would get more than 25% of the band's publishing, merchandising and touring revenue as well as profit from the group's albums.
"This is the direction that the music business is going," David Munns, chief executive of EMI Recorded Music North America, told the Los Angeles Times. "The music and records we produce drive an artist's career. But our margins are under threat and our marketing costs are getting more expensive. We should share in the other revenue streams that are created."
Others are skeptical.
The KORN contract "might be one of those deals that revolutionizes the music industry," said Rick Sales, a manager at Sanctuary Artist Management. "Or, EMI might wake up one day and wonder why they just handed KORN 10 years' worth of profits."
Jeff Kwatinetz, co-founder of The Firm, who brokered KORN's deal with EMI, said his clients expected to see their overall revenue increase because the label would have an incentive to spend more on promoting the group internationally.
"KORN does fantastic touring in Europe, but when the band was signed to Sony, it was hard to get them to spend a lot promoting the band overseas, because they sell fewer albums there than in the U.S.," Kwatinetz said. "This deal increases the size of the pie for promotions and of the revenues everyone collects.
"Something has to be done to change the economics of this industry. This may or may not be the answer, but it's a good step forward."
In the case of KORN, the deal is surprising to some because the band's sales have declined.
Although KORN sold a combined 7 million units in the U.S. of two albums released in the late 1990s, the group's last two records haven't sold more than 1.5 million copies apiece, according to Nielsen SoundScan. And though KORN's 2002 tour grossed $16 million, the band's 2004 solo series took in only $3.3 million, according to concert trade publication Pollstar.
EMI executive Munns said he was optimistic about the band's future after listening to its new, unreleased album.
"KORN has made a really exciting and dynamic record," Munns said. "Their touring is surprisingly robust, and they do a lot of it. This band will be a hit for a long time."

KORN's as-yet-untitled new effort was mixed by Terry Date, who has previously worked with such artists as DEFTONES, PANTERA and SOULFLY, among others. Matrix (AVRIL LAVIGNE, THE MOONEY SUZUKI) and Atticus Ross (BAD RELIGION, PINK) were responsible for the production duties on the follow-up to 2003's "Take a Look in the Mirror". Other songtitles expected to appear on the CD include "Liar", "Politix", "Last Legal Drug", "Le Petit Mort", "It's Me Again", "Coming Undone", "I've Seen It All" and "Souvenir of Sadness".

Sepultura Hard At Work On New Album
The following update has been posted at SEPULTURA's official web site:
"SEPULTURA got back in the studio to record thei 11th full-length album. Everybody is in São Paulo, Brazil, close to their families and friends working everyday from noon to midnight.
"During the first week of September they recorded the drum tracks for the new songs. It works like this: Paulo [bass], Andreas [guitar] and Igor [drums] play along while the drums only are being recorded. Later Andreas records the guitar tracks playing along with the drum tracks. Then bass and vocals. Easy? Yep, that's why it takes at least a month to record a decent album.
"They'll record to cover songs to be released, later, as b-sides. JUDAS PRIEST's 'Screaming for Vengeance' and SICK OF IT ALL's 'Scratching the Surface'.
"The new album is based on Dante Alighieri's 'The Divine Comedy' and the 10 songs of the album are separated [into] three parts: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
"This week Andreas starts recording the rythm guitars. Everything is going smooth in the studio."
A later posting on the web site reads as follows:
"SEPULTURA enters the third week of recordings. Last week Andreas started recording the rhythm guitar tracks. Two tracks for each song, using different guitars.
"The songs, with no vocals yet, start to get the sound and shape we'll hear on the album. We can identify some new stuff and influences in SEPULTURA's music. SEPULTURA won't let you down, that's for sure.
"This week Andreas will finish his part and later on, Paulo will get in the studio to record the bass lines."

Arch Enemy Back Home From Ozzfest
Guitarist Michael Amott has posted this message on the official Arch Enemy website:
"Wow, that was 2 months that went by quickly – we had a blast this summer in the US! The Ozzfest dates were very successful for us and we enjoyed seeing our music connect with so many fans, new and old. Also our new album “Doomsday Machine” coming out while we were actually in the U.S.A (a first for us) was a highlight!
"We’d like to thank all the great fans for coming out and seeing us play (more often than not at a not-so-metal time of day) and supporting us at our signing sessions at the FYE and Jägermeister tents – you are the true spirit of the metal scene.
"Thank you to all the cool bands on Ozzfest – it was a pleasure sharing the 2nd stage with you - good luck to you all in the future! A metal salute to Jake at FYE (Ozzfest) for going out of his way to get my Black Sabbath box set signed – hopefully see you in November!
"Right now we are back home in Sweden, we’ll be starting rehearsals next week… With a new guitar player - a Swede this time! That’s going to be really cool…I am excited about this new guy – he’s a sick ripper! More on this very soon…
"Of course, we want to thank our Greek friend Gus for coming in and doing this summer with Arch Enemy in the US! The boy did good!!! (I am personally going to miss my Greek language lessons…I was making great progress...really, honestly!).
"Ahead of us lies a bunch of European dates (it’s been awhile!) and Japan (always amazing) – we are super excited about this of course!
(Rumors have it that we’ll also be making a trip to a continent Arch Enemy has not yet visited – this should be very close to being confirmed now…).
"Ok. That’s it. The next chapter of the Doomsday tale is soon upon us… We won’t be breathing Swedish air for much longer…"
Anthrax Guitarist Checks In With Gigantour Update
Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian has posted the following Gigantour update on the band's official website:
"Comrades,
"Cold and rainy Seattle on a Saturday afternoon and we're playing outside! Well at least the seats are covered. Gigantour has been a blast. Too short. We're only on 5 shows on this traveling metal extravaganza and I wish it was going longer. Everyone's been great to us like we've been here the whole time. Us newbies were treated very well. Edmonton and Calgary were killer. We hadn't been in those cities since 1988 if memory serves and the crowds were crazy. I am so stoked we will be back with Priest so soon. Vancouver was the best show so far. We were there last in 2000 (with Snake Sabo on guitar) so it had not been as long as the other cities but damn they were hungry. Vancouver was nuts. The circle-pit in Indians was huuuuuuge! Thank you so much and we'll see you in a few weeks as well on the Priest tour. We went to see Oasis on our night off in Vancouver. They were good. Beyond all the hype and bullshit they are a great rock band. That's my story. We've been hanging with the LOA guys who kick ass every night. I've been talking to Dave about next year. Things are in the works. I hope it pans out. I have to thank Dave as well for being so persistent in getting us on this tour. It's been a blast for us and I think for the fans as well. Our two bands together work very well. I fucking love metal. Seattle tonight.
Cheers,
Scott
PS The CDC will launch soon. We are compiling loads of content. And there will be live chats for sure. I did one yesterday in the Gigantour forum and it was great."

Drowningman Track Inspired By MySpace Members
MTV.com reports: Simon Brody's a self-proclaimed MySpace devotee. The frontman for Vermont mathcore masters Drowningman's not ashamed of that — but he has made his fair share of MySpace-related mistakes. Brody's learned from these mishaps, he said, and turned those lemons into lemonade in the form of "Major Disappointment Reporting for Duty," a track from his band's forthcoming LP, "Don't Push Us When We're Hot."
"Anyone who's ever met a potential romantic interest over the Internet will understand what that song title means," Brody said. "Someone's either been Major Disappointment or has met Major Disappointment. If they've ever delved into the world of MySpace and met any of those freaky people, they'll relate."
Not that the song itself is about the perils of online encounters — just the title really. Yes Brody's tempted fate by meeting several of his Internet pursuers in the flesh. But it's a practice he's given up for good.
"I've basically come to the conclusion that when any girl who seeks me out on the Internet, there's going to be problems," he elaborated. "I have met some girls on the Internet in person, and they've all been mentally unstable." One woman bought him a plane ticket and he went to visit her in Minneapolis. Another girl, this one from Virginia, drove 16 hours to visit him in Vermont. Brody's convinced it's because the photo that appears on his MySpace page shows him bareback.
