Coliseum Prepares New Album
Louisville, KY's Coliseum will be heading into God City Studios in Salem, MA to record their new album with Kurt Ballou in May 2007.
The band had this to say in an official statement:
"Chris flew in this week for five days of heavy duty songwriting and it went great - probably our best and most productive experience playing music together since Chris joined the band. We wrote two new songs and made some changes to two songs we'd written previously this year, "Seven Cities" and "The Burden." We have eight songs finished or in demo stages now and are shooting for around 16 when we enter the studio, so we can leave with a 10 or 12 song album and a few songs for splits, singles, etc. So far, most of the songs have shaped up to be about death or religion... That just seems to be the climate that prevails these days. Speaking of this last year... Chris Maggio has now been in Coliseum for a full year! It's been fucking great to have him in the band. 2006 has flown by and we accomplished a lot... Our first European tour, a split CD with Lords, a split 7"/CD with Young Widows, tours with Municipal Waste, Lords, Young Widows, Doomriders and Saviours, plus a full US tour on our own... Not to mention all the stuff in between. Thanks to everyone for the support, we're really amped for next year and the release of our next album!!!!"

Original Heathen Vocalist Passes Away
Sam Kress, the original vocalist of acclaimed San Francisco Bay Area thrashers HEATHEN and former co-editor of early '80s underground fanzine Whiplash, passed away several days ago. The cause of his death has not been released.
In a recent posting on his blog, Whiplash co-founder Brian Lew had the following to say about Sam Kress:
"Sam and I created a metal 'zine called Whiplash. Basically, Sam was more the business guy and I was more the creative guy and we worked well together... We also spent a lot of time hanging out with other metalhead friends... Listening to metal, drinking, being young and stupid. I can't even guess how many times I crashed on his couch.
"While in New York, Sam had befriended a guy starting a record label called Torrid. Long story short, Sam helped broker the release of EXODUS' seminal debut album 'Bonded By Blood' on the Torrid / Combat Records label in 1985.
"I've always considered 'Bonded By Blood' to be THE defining album of the Bay Area old metal scene. No disrespect to METALLICA's 'Kill 'Em All', but METALLICA's songs were primarily written before the band relocated from SoCal to S.F.; EXODUS were 100% Bay Area born and bred. East Bay OG. EXODUS raged the hardest and Sam and I were right there with them.
"Sam and I are thanked side-by-side in the liner notes of several old metal albums, including METALLICA's 'Ride The Lightning' and EXODUS' 'Bonded By Blood'. We were metal bruthas and back then that meant A LOT."
Gospel of the Horns Post New Album Samples
Australian black/thrash metal act GOSPEL OF THE HORNS has released audio clips of songs that will appear on their "Realm of the Damned" CD. The long-awaited follow up to 2002's "A Call to Arms" is scheduled for release in early 2007 via Invictus Productions.
You can hear some teasers on the band's MySpace page.
According to the Invictus Productions, "Realm of the Damned" sees GOSPEL OF THE HORNS "moving forward in style but retaining that G.O.T.H. rhythm and feel so evident on 'Eve of the Conqueror' [2000 debut EP]. . . Heavy, raw, with a class touch of MOT?RHEAD, CELTIC FROST, RAZOR, SODOM (to name some obvious references)."
