Jay Weinberg Premieres New Single & Music Video

Drummer Jay Weinberg (formerly of Slipknot and Suicidal Tendencies) has teamed up with a pair of former Roadrunner Records alumni for a new collaboration under the name NOWHERE2RUN. The project features Jami Morgan and Eric 'Shade' Balderose of Code Orange.

For the track, Weinberg handled drums, guitars, bass and keyboards as part of his growing, guest-driven solo project. Morgan provided vocals, while Shade contributed guitar, vocals, as well as programming and electronic elements.

The song marks the second release from Weinberg’s self-titled venture, following last November’s “Sandstone,” which featured George Clarke of Deafheaven.

Jay Weinberg (Ex-Slipknot) Debuts Solo Single

Multi-instrumentalist Jay Weinberg (Suicidal Tendencies, ex-Slipknot, etc.) has officially introduced his self-titled solo project. Weinberg first hinted at stepping into solo work back in December of 2024, and now that venture arrives with its debut track, “Sandstone,” featuring Deafheaven vocalist George Clarke.

A visualizer for the song has been released, showcasing material recorded across multiple sessions in Nashville, TN and Los Angeles, CA. Though widely recognized for his drumming, Weinberg has taken on guitar duties for this new project as well.

Alongside the track’s premiere, Weinberg has confirmed plans to release a guest-heavy debut EP in early 2026.

Speaking with Wall Of Sound, he revealed that the origins of “Sandstone” trace back 6–8 years, with its ideas finally coming to fruition through this collaborative creative outlet. More...

Was Day One Of Mystic The Busiest And The Best?

I mentioned in the Mystic Festival Warm Up Day Road Report that the official first day of the festival would be the most hectic for me. The tally consisted of twelve band sets and a visit to the Vader band exhibition (which was very cool!). I’m not going to touch on every band I saw, but I’ll pick my top 5 bands this day for me. If you’re curious of who else played, you can check them out in the photo gallery HERE!

I also mentioned the possibility of the weather not cooperating, and again, it didn’t. There were some periods of downpours and light rain here and there so because of this, I could only catch one or two songs max of some of the bands. It was a day where rain jackets and ponchos were high fashion and the indoor areas of the festival grounds were much more than a welcome sight and a convenience.

I wasn’t a fan of the day’s headlining act, but because they were given that honor, I feel obliged to write at least something about them. Being a headliner at a festival usually means you have something special planned or a stage show that makes just about every band that played before you somewhat forgettable. I didn’t see any of this. They’re great at what they do, which is sort of this power and progressive metal band that skirts the line of both genres. I can say this without prejudice: The vocalist, Anders Fridén, is very characteristic and can command a large audience with ease. Chris Broderick, one of the guitarists, was in Megadeth for a minute. Björn Gelotte, the lead guitarist, has been in the band since its inception along with Anders.

I’ve been told that In Flames was a lot heavier during its formative years and I’m not surprised. I didn’t listen to them back then, so I have no opinion regarding how heavy they used to be. I do admit, the light show was pretty cool during my abbreviated time watching their set. Most of the material they played came from the album, “Foregone,” which was released in 2023 and is their 14th studio album. So, there you go. That’s all I’m going to write about them and it’s been too much already.

Suicidal Tendencies is a band that actually made an impression on me on this day. They are a band that needs no introduction unless you stumbled on this report by accident while researching dark and depressing subject matter. And unlike the subject matter, their live shows are guaranteed to leave you with happy thoughts and warm fuzzies.

When Suicidal Tendencies first came on stage, I wondered who the teenager was jumping around on the bass? Then it hit me like a skateboard deck against the head, that’s Robert Trujillo’s son! It’s been a minute since I’ve seen them and I remember reading about this a while back. He was all over the stage…in fact, they all were! I had forgotten how spastic their stage antics were. I was in the photo pit and I learned quickly that you just need to hold your ground and eventually the shot will come to you. Don’t chase the members around, you’ll only lose shot chances.

They opened their set with “You Can’t Bring Me Down” and in my head I heard “The Rain Can’t Bring Me Down” instead. At least it was dry during their time on stage. Mike Muir kept egging on the crowd to keep the mosh pit moving. The actual pit area was a mud bog only rivaled by The Redneck Yacht Club by the time band had finished. The coolest thing I saw throughout the festival happened during their set. During the song, “I Saw Your Mommy,” a gaggle of teenagers were let up on stage to help sing the song. They were jumping and headbanging along with the band. Even if you don’t for the music, you have to love this band for stuff like this.

Elder is one of those band that you either love them or you can’t stand them. One thing you just can’t argue about is how talented they are. In fact, they might have been the most talented musicians at this year’s festival. If you’re not familiar with them, they are known for their very progressive style of metal. I’ve always likened them to a metalized version of King Crimson. The are definitely a musicians’ band but they also appeal to your casual metal fan. The band Tool even had Elder open up for them during their 2024 tour.

It was raining throughout the majority of Elder’s set, but the Desert Stage area remained packed with onlookers the whole time. They played flawlessly. How do I know that? Well, I’m a huge fan and I would easily have noticed if there was a flub or blunder. Elder had a reduced setlist consisting of only the songs “Compendium,” “Sanctuary,” “Dead Roots Stirring,” “Deadweight,” and “Halcyon.” I kid about the “only” description because if you know anything about the band, their songs run on average more than 10 minutes long. I didn’t stay for the whole set because my camera bag and gear was getting soaked after one song into it. I made my way to confines of the food court area to dry off and plot my next moves.

Desertfest London 2024: Day 2

Fridays are always a good time at Desertfest. Everyone's excited and eager to check bands out, enjoy some of their cult favourites and get the vibe going, but Saturday is often when the real meat and potatoes are served. Last year alone fans were treated to the likes of Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar, Weedeater and Slomatics and this year saw some heavy hitters on board, even if they were some surprising ones.

Just like yesterday, things began in the Underworld with a Norwegian band, this time in the form of Kal-El. While I was disappointed that a band named after Superman didn't walk on to the classic John Williams theme, but that was the only thing even close to a low point from this set. Kal-El started really well, but somehow got better and better as the show went on. Fuzzy and furious, the quartet performed both tracks from their latest EP, "Moon People," (namely the title track and "Universe,) in a set which was a perfect blend of crushing metal and fun hard rock. The band gelled together so well and the chemistry was plain to see for all in attendance as they continued to tear through their slot. A fantastic way to get things underway and I can't wait to see them again. More...

Sepultura Parts Ways With Drummer Eloy Casagrande

Brazilian metal legends Sepultura has announced that drummer Eloy Casagrande has decided to leave the band, shortly before the opening run of their farewell tour. Taking his place will be American drummer Greyson Nekrutman, best known for his work with Suicidal Tendencies. A statement from the band reads as follows:

"The 'Celebrating Life Through Death' tour, a farewell tour over the next 18 months that will celebrate the band's 40th anniversary and also its farewell to the stage.

"Beginning of December the group clearly defined the intention at the announcement, it is a 'conscious and planned death.' As poetic as it sounds, a tour of this magnitude took nearly of year of preparing and planning which would require a lot commitment, ethics and loyalty to their fans, as well as respecting for the band's history, something that is a clear priority to Andreas Kisser, Derrick Green and Paulo Xisto.

"However, on February 6th a few days prior to the first rehearsal, drummer Eloy Casagrande informed the band that he was leaving Sepultura to pursue a career in another project. The band were taken by surprise, without prior warning, he immediately left the band, abandoning everything related to Sepultura.

"Luckily American virtuoso Greyson Nekrutman will take the position of Eloy Casagrande and is welcomed as the band's new drummer for the 'Celebrating Life Through Death' farewell tour." More...

Testament Recruits Former Slayer Drummer

Bay Area thrash metal legends, who recently parted company with drummer Gene Hoglan, has announced a very worthy replacement in the form of ex Slayer and Grip Inc. drummer, Dave Lombardo. Lombardo is also the drummer of fellow Californian legends Suicidal Tendencies and is expected to continue his role in the band.

Frontman Chuck Billy declares "I’ll state the obvious, We are more than overwhelmed to welcome back Dave Lombardo to play drums with Testament. We are so excited to share the stage again with Lombardo. Dave added immense power when he joined the band for The Gathering (release), and we are ecstatic to see what new flavor he will bring back to Testament."

Dave Lombardo stated, "This is a long-awaited reunion that was bound to happen. Once upon a time, we created a thrash masterpiece. I have no doubt that our musical chemistry will pick up exactly where we left off. I love the Testament family and am very excited to be joining them once again. Pure brutality awaits."

Guitarist Eric Peterson expresses, "Having Dave Lombardo join us again feels like we are picking up where unfinished business had left off. There is a silver lining to every cloud and working again with Dave calls for us to celebrate with our horns held high expresses, Having Dave Lombardo join us again feels like we are picking up where unfinished business had left off. There is a silver lining to every cloud and working again with Dave calls for us to celebrate with our horns held high!"

"Testament is one of my all-time favorite bands, so to be able to amplify the news of their newest member, Dave Lombardo, and fire up the metal community is an honor bestowed upon me by the metal Gods!" says Jose Mangin of SiriusXM Liquid Metal.

Dave Lombardo has been very busy since parting ways with Slayer in 2013 following a pay dispute. He initially returned one of his previous projects Philm, before retiring the band in early 2016, shortly after he launched Dead Cross with Faith No More vocalist Mike Patton, whom he previously worked with in Fantomas. In 2016, he joined crossover thrash icons Suicidal Tendencies, as well as horror punk legends Misfits and still plays with both to this day. In 2019, Lombardo again joined forces with Mike Patton, when he was confirmed as the new drummer of Mr. Bungle and performed on their latest album, "The Raging Wrath Pf The Easter Bunny Demo."
