Thrash metal is a hugely influential genre which brought the heavier side of metal to mainstream attention with some big names and albums back in the eighties. Many bands such as Hirax and Vio-Lence were as thrash metal as it gets, while some brought new ideas and new styles to the genre. Today's column looks at a band which did just that, one which went from gang associated skaters to thrash stalwarts with danceable bass lines. Of course, this could be no one else but the one and only, Suicidal Tendencies.
Suicidal Tendencies was formed in 1981 and was originally intended as just a party band by vocalist Mike Muir, but before long, their live notoriety and popularity had the group creeping to the front of the singer's life. What helped create such a buzz around Suicidal Tendencies was the rumours surrounding them, mostly that they were involved with gangs, in part due to Muir's blue bandana and in time, a gang that revolved around the group called Suicidal Cycos sprung up in California. The band, which also consisted of guitarist Mike Ball, Carlos "Egie" Egert on drums, and bass player Mike Dunnigan, soon recorded their first demo and appeared in the Surfpunks documentary, performing the songs, "Kill" and "Parents For Adoption." Egert left after the first recording and Mike Dunnigan's brother, Sean took his place, though both brothers left after their appearance on the Slamulation compilation. More...

The American hardcore/crossover thrash metal legends in Suicidal Tendencies have announced that bass player Tim "Rawbiz" Williams, who joined the group in 2011 and left earlier this year, has sadly passed away.
The cause of death has so far not been revealed. A statement from the band reads as follows:
"It’s with complete sadness that we have to announce the passing of bassist Tim 'Rawbiz' Williams. Tim played bass for Suicidal Tendencies for almost four years until recently.
"Tim was a monster on bass, running around on stage in the pit, giving his all, even when his body wasn’t at it's best. We will always remember him and appreciate all the kind words by those that were touched by his bass playing and him personally."
More information will be revealed once it becomes available.
This week, our Official Podcast experienced something of a change.
As regular co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) is away in Europe, long time writer, Diamond Oz (who is ironically, from and residing in Europe) filled in for him to discuss with Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) some of the biggest stories of late.
They begin by talking about the new Cannibal Corpse material, before discussing the forthcoming Slayer tour of North America, where they will be joined by Exodus and Suidical Tendencies and then wrapping things up with an in depth discussion about the new Mastodon album, "Once More 'Round the Sun."

When Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, and Exodus played a handful of dates together this past May, every date was sold out. With reviews like "the best show in years that I've been blessed to witness," "a metalhead's dream come true," and "...an onslaught of heart-pounding tunes during an evening full of awesome head banging action," how could this trinity of thrash legends not join up again for a full-on road trip?
With Scion proudly presenting, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, and Exodus will hit the road this fall, kicking off November 12th in Oakland, CA, playing through to December 5th in Detroit, MI. The confirmed itinerary is below.
Slayer fan club members are invited to take advantage of a ticket pre-sale that will begin this Wednesday, June 25 at 10AM (local time) and ends on Thursday, June 26 at 5:00PM (local time). "This monumental tour is a heavy metal collision of epic proportions," added Exodus vocalist Steve 'Zetro' Souza who has just rejoined the band. I have lots of great memories from that tour, and know that there will be a lot more after these shows, for the band and the people. Can’t wait!"
Gary Holt states, " I am very excited to announce Exodus will be joining Suicidal Tendencies and the mighty Slayer in May for a short trip ending at the Rock on the Range! Double duty will have never been so much fun! Looking forward to this one in a big way! Let the mayhem begin!”

December 12, 2013-- Flip baseball caps, blue bandannas and button shirts welcomed Suicidal Tendencies to the Mohawk in Austin, Texas. In a sense, the group was in town to visit old friends--fans with a devotion that stretched back to the early '80s. A large faction of youth, possibly the children of these older fans, helped provide the spark to keep ST's fire burning bright. This is not saying the older crowd members ever lost their passion for the group; I witnessed men in their '40s stage diving, crowd surfing and slamming to one of Los Angeles' most popular heavy acts.
Suicidal's musical mash-up of hardcore punk, thrash and funk works well with a variety of styles. I first witnessed the unbridled energy of ST front man, Mike Muir in 1992 on MTV's Headbangers Ball tour with Megadeth. That tour was marketed to the thrash crowd. Back then "Cyco Miko" burned up a stage several times larger than at the Palace of Auburn Hills near Detroit, Michigan than Mohawk's outdoor stage. Tonight's tour, dubbed "Slam City" after the track on the group's latest full-length recording "13," focused on the band's hardcore side with supporting acts, Terror and Trash Talk. More...
