A Cold Day In Hell: Frozen Soul At The Underworld

So far this year, we've covered gigs headlined by Cabal and Baest, two bands with plenty of heaviness to offer. This week is no exception, as Frozen Soul, one of the fastest rising death metal groups in America, returned to European shores for a headlining tour in support of their latest record, "Glacial Domination," which more than lives up to the title. They weren't alone either, as they brought some stellar support along with them for the ride who were all eager to impress and crush crowds in equal measure. Tonight, it was time for Frozen Soul's first headlining performance at The Underworld, one of the most notable venues in Camden (and there's plenty to choose from,) which has hosted many of metal's most beloved names.

Kicking things off with a little bit of local flavour, London death metal squadron Overthrow got things underway. They certainly looked the part and the music was no different, boasting a real meaty sound reminiscent of the genre's heyday. Songs like "Ruptured Nebula" and "Lords Of Xibalba," really demonstrated how menacing death metal can be and did a good job of grabbing the interest of concert goers who weren't too familiar with the group. In addition to their own material, the band finished with a rendition of the Cannibal Corpse classic, "Hammer Smashed Face," perhaps a daring thing to do but the crowd loved it and Overthrow pulled it off very well. A solid opening act which is well worth your time if you get the opportunity to see them for yourself. More...

Korpiklaani Debuts "Aita" Music Video

Finnish folk metal superstars Korpiklaani are happy to unleash "Aita," the second single from their upcoming new studio album, "Rankarumpu," which is due to be released on April 5th 2024.

'Aita' keeps up the full-speed ahead approach from the previous single, 'Saunaan'. The dizzying pace, a catchy chorus and a masterful violin/accordion duel make 'Aita' an absolutely irresistible tune that bears all trademarks the Finns are universally known and loved for. Folk metal at its best!

Composer Olli Vänskä commented:
"'Aita' was actually composed as an instrumental track, or that was at least the intention. I sent a demo version to Jonne and when I was asking about it a week later, he told me "hell no!" and gave me the lyrics he wrote. And good lyrics, too! I'm very satisfied about the violin riff and how the folk interlude turned out as well. Lots of interesting stuff happening there!"

Front man Jonne Järvelä added:
"I got a very cool demo song from Olli to which I riffed with a guitar. Then a theme started to form in my head that I transformed into a song which was easy to write words to.

"In the lyrics, the main person meets an old familiar village man who has been on the road as a travelling man for a long time and returns to his home village. The man asks his friend all sorts of questions about what he has seen around the world, but the travelling man only answers vaguely, but with wise lessons." More...

Slaughtersun Release Apocalyptic New Track

Slaughtersun have released the apocalyptic new track "Relentless Thelemic".

Ben Karas comments:

“'Relentless Thelemic' explores the burnout of a metaphysical polytheism; worshipping too many gods and failing to tend to the self. The rituals we all endure to maintain our environment. Our Household. Our community. And where that leaves us when it's all over." More...

Exit Eden Releases "Désenchantée" Video

Symphonic metal unit Exit Eden – consisting of Clémentine Delauney (Visions of Atlantis), Anna Brunner (League of Distortion) and Marina La Torraca (Phantom Elite) – has unveiled a stunning new music video for their shimmering cover version of French iconic pop artist Mylène Farmer’s "Désenchantée." French-born Clémentine Delauney presents the track in her mother tongue – which marks the very first time ever doing so for a whole song! "Désenchantée" is cut from the band’s second studio album, "Femmes Fatales," and, together with the accompanying music video, lures the listener into the mysterious world of Mylène Farmer, showing a whole new exciting facet of Exit Eden.

In addition to its six cover versions of famous cross-generational super-hits, "Femmes Fatales" is the trio’s first record featuring original songs, written by Anna Brunner and Hannes Braun (Kissin’ Dynamite), with one exception, "Dying In My Dreams," co-written by Marina La Torraca. Exit Eden’s new masterpiece follows their debut, "Rhapsodies In Black" (#15 DE album charts), and millions of video views (12M on their cover of Bonnie Tyler’s "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" alone). The album, in its entirety, marks an illustration of strength and female empowerment topped with symphonic heaviness. Watch the official music video for "Désenchantée" below and make sure to order your copy of "Femmes Fatales!"

Clémentine Delauney on the song:
"Reflecting upon the journey that shaped the woman I've become, I, Clementine, delved into the influences of my youth – the individuals and artists who ignited my inspiration. Among them, Mylène Farmer, a pop artist whose universe, thoughts, and messages I held in high regard during my teenage years. Her poetry, distinctiveness, and bittersweet perspective on life, with a touch of melancholy, left an indelible mark. I am convinced that her portrayal of despair and loneliness remains relevant to this day.

"In our video rendition of 'Désenchantée,' I aimed to pay homage to this iconic song and the unparalleled artist behind it. Seeking to evoke the essence of the 90s, the era of its inception, I imagined a way to connect it to the contemporary landscape of 2024 - a world where the evolution of our digital lives has heightened the sense of isolation.

"Releasing on Valentine's Day, this tribute is for anyone feeling lonely in our super-connected world." More...
