MOAB Show Report From Frederick, MD
A few weeks ago on a Friday night, I had the chance to get out and check out Frederick, MD's only decent metal venue and see MOAB, who I had wanted to see in a more intimate setting since witnessing them open for Anthrax. Also playing that night were DBauchery and Admiral Browning.
First, let me touch on the local Frederick, Maryland scene. Years ago when my brother was in a band, there were several places scattered around Frederick that would host heavy metal bands. These days, the Braddock Inn seems to be the only place that has regularly hosted metal bands. They have a show just about every Friday, in fact. The inn or tavern appears to be little more than a large old house on the outside, but in the lower level, it has a bar, restaurant and pool area. The band's "stage" sits actually a little lower than the seating area and the open space directly in front of them, while the pool area is behind them and anouther couple of steps down. The place could probably hold a hundred people or so if they were packed in tight and in the pool area behind the band. View of the band from the bar is mostly obstructed by a large stone fireplace, which creates a cozy atmosphere toward the back of the large room. Overall, it's a nice place to hear new music and maybe sit down while doing it. It's not a great place to mosh though. More...

Rob Barrett Re-Joins Officially Cannibal Corpse
Guitarist Rob Barrett has officially rejoined CANNIBAL CORPSE as a permanent replacement for guitarist Jack Owen, who left the band in 2004. Barrett, who played with the group from 1993 to 1997 and appeared on "The Bleeding" and "Vile" albums, has contributed a song to the band's upcoming tenth album, "Kill", due on March 21, 2006 via Metal Blade Records. The CD is being recorded at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida with producer Erik Rutan (MORBID ANGEL, HATE ETERNAL).
With regards to the new album's musicial direction, the band had previously said, "We are doing everything we can to make sure it's the heaviest, most brutal one we've ever made."
CANNIBAL CORPSE have been utilizing session musicians for their recent touring activities, including Barrett and Jeremy Turner, who had previously played with ORIGIN.
Bertinelli Divorcing Rocker Eddie Van Halen
Valerie Bertinelli and her rock star husband, Eddie Van Halen, are divorcing after 24 years of marriage, Bertinelli's publicist confirmed Tuesday.
"Yes, that's true. They have been separated for four years and it's amicable," Bertinelli spokeswoman Heidi Schaeffer told The Associated Press. She said the actress would have no further comment.
A divorce petition that Bertinelli, 45, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday cited irreconcilable differences.
The couple wed on April 11, 1981, and have one son, 14-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen. According to the petition, they separated on Oct. 15, 2001.
Bertinelli shot to fame as the sexy 15-year-old daughter of Bonnie Franklin on the hit television show "One Day at a Time," which aired from 1975 to 1984. She rejoined Franklin and Mackenzie Phillips, who played her sister, for a reunion show earlier this year. She was also a regular on television's "Touched by an Angel" from 2001 to 2003.
Van Halen, 50, is one of the most celebrated lead guitarists in rock music. He rose to fame in the late 1970s, along with his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony as members of Van Halen.
The group was known for wild excess both on and offstage in its early years, and Van Halen, once a heavy smoker, was treated for cancer in 2000 and 2001.

Arch Enemy Back On European Soil
Guitarist Michael Amott has posted this message on the official Arch Enemy website:
"Hey Metal Heads!
"ARCH ENEMY is back on European soil again – it’s been awhile… Japan, Australia and the U.S/Canada dates have all been great and the reactions to the songs from “DOOMSDAY MACHINE” live are strong and powerful. We are very grateful and pleased that our creation is touching metal hearts around the world.
"Next up for us now are 2 shows in Spain, 2 in Italy and 5 shows in the U.K…
"I heard they might let us go home after that, I’ll believe that when I’m there!
"The 2 Canadian shows we just did on this run were phenomenal – the Canadian metal fans are just great. Very enthusiastic indeed!
"Quebec was a revelation! The last (and only) time we played there before, it was as an opening act for the mighty Iron Maiden… As great as that was – it was nice to know that we can hold our own in a club up there. The audience was screaming and growling so loud at the beginning of the show that I couldn’t hear the intro tape.
That my friends, is METAL.
"Alain and all the people at “Capital Of Metal” are doing a superb job up at making the Quebec metal scene flourish and grow – we hope to be back soon again with ARCH ENEMY!
"After a 10 hour drive to Toronto and a pretty rocking sound check (messing around with some new riffs) I hooked up with my fave metal scribe, Martin Popoff. I purchased a bunch of his excellent books. I read the “RAINBOW: English Castle Magic” book on the flight to Germany coming over, blasting RAINBOW on my iPOD - great flight!
"Martin also did a short interview for an update at the BW&BK site. Some cool news and facts there - if you are interested. Check it out here.
"The Toronto show was killer too. A very loud audience again. Met a lot of great fans after the show. Said goodbye to our touring friends in A PERFECT MURDER, MNEMIC and ALL THAT REMAINS. We wish them the best of luck with their new album recordings and/or touring plans!
"I picked up a 2-CD version of Canadian 80's thrashers SACRIFICE – "Torment In Fire" album (originally released back in ’86)… Great early thrash/death album that I loved on vinyl as a kid – great to hear it again! "Homicidal Breath"!
"So yeah, we flew from Toronto, Canada to Frankfurt, Germany… Got here in the morning. Slept all day, now I am up all night. Great planning! Well, we are night creatures after all...that’s what 6 straight months on the road will do to you… Run with the wolf!"
Amon Amarth Checks In With Tour Report
Amon Amarth vocalist, Johan Hegg, has posted the following tour update on the band's official website:
"Time flies when you're having fun, and time during the last three weeks has been super sonic!! Since last time we checked in we've played Salt Lake City, Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, San Fransisco, Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego, and all of those shows has been great. Every show virtually sold out, with amazing support from the crowd.
"In fact the tour has been so good, that we underestimated the amount of T-shirts we'd need, and therefore ran out in Los Angeles. Unfortunately we realized this too late and weren't able to re-stock until today in Dallas. To all of you who hoped to buy T-shirts or longsleeves in Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego, we can only say we're sorry about that, and we promise to bring enough stuff next time.
"Right now we're kicking back with a couple of cold ones after the show here in Dallas. It's was great to see all you fans - old and new - and to talk to you after the show. We hope to see all of you next time!"
Soilwork Celebrates 100th Show
Soilwork frontman, Bjorn "Speed" Strid, checked in with the following report:
"Hi!
"We have 3 shows to go on this tour, the bus is getting close to stink worse than you ever can imagine, still we've had an amazing tour...We got stopped by the police on the border to California and they searched through the whole bus for drugs, i tell you: poor dogs!! I don't even think the dogs would have found a bag filled with 20 pound cocain in there.. We couldn't possibly found a better band to share the bus with Darkane though, since we come from the same little town we had a lot to talk about during the tour...
"You also might know that we got an award on the Danish Metal Awards as the best international act which of course was really cool since we were competing with acts like System of a Down and The Haunted.. So, a big hail to the people voting for Soilwork!
"Bill Ward from Black Sabbath came to watch our show in Anaheim and got his own reserved seat on the balcony. He came to the dressing room after the show and said he loved the set and praised Dirk's drumming... Thanx for coming out Bill!!
"In Anaheim we also celebrated the 100th show for the 'Stabbing the drama' album since march when the album was released.. More to come..
"Also a big hail to Meshuggah drummer Thomas Haake for joining the "Bus-diving-party" in Anaheim.. i'm surprised we didn't break the bus in half....
"Other than that, keep the Soilwork tattoo pics coming, i know there's a helluva lot more pics to be sent to our site...
"Later, Speed"

Hard Rock/Metal Musicians Remember Dimebag Darrell
MTV News spoke with members of some 30 hard rock and metal bands about the Dimebag they remember. They told MTV how much he'd meant to them, they shared fond memories and spoke of the impact he made on their lives and their music. Here are several excerpts from the article:
David Draiman - frontman, Disturbed: "During our second Ozzfest, we were holed up in Dallas for about two or three days ... hanging out at Dime's place — it was an eclectic house. There's all kinds of Pantera memorabilia and Dimebag memorabilia all over the place. But you could never make the mistake of falling asleep at Dime's. He'd wake you up the way he always did: with firecrackers. He'd always set off an entire chain of firecrackers not two inches from my head. One time ... Dime took us to a strip club where we all judged a bikini contest. There was never a wrong time in the day for Dime to hit a strip club. ... Dime was just this character who was very easy to love. He didn't have a bad bone in his body, and was ready to give you the shirt off his back at all times. It was his mission in life to make sure every single moment you spent with him was the best moment of your life. He was selfless."
Zakk Wylde - frontman, Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society: "Whenever you were around Dime, there was never a boring moment. He was the coolest guy on the planet. He was an even better person than he was a guitar player, if that's even possible. Whenever me and him would hook up, forget about it, bro. We'd always have to have a spare kidney, liver and pancreas on ice."
Brian Fair - frontman, Shadows Fall: "Dime seemed to have a real problem with the clock on our tour bus. It all started with his tour manager trying to tell him it was time to leave. ... We were having a good old time and Dime didn't want to go to bed. So, as soon as he was told it was time to leave, he grabbed the clock off of the wall and screams at the top of his lungs, 'There is no time!' and he smashed his hand right through it. The clock was made of glass and metal, and shrapnel flew everywhere. He went through three clocks on our bus like that. Anytime anyone tried to tell him it was time to go, he'd destroy the clock. He didn't want to end the party — he wanted it to keep going. We kept replacing the clock because we wanted to see what happened next."
