Original Pentagram Member Loses Battle w/ Cancer

Vincent McAllister, the guitarist and a founding member of seminal American Doom Metal band PENTAGRAM, has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 51.

McAllister played guitar in the classic '70s PENTAGRAM lineup that also included vocalist Bobby Liebling, bassist Greg Mayne and drummer Geof O'Keefe. His recorded works can be heard throughout the various PENTAGRAM collections.

McAllister was highly respected as a guitarist and person amongst his peers. McAllister had spent the past few years working on material in his home studio and planning to return to playing again with former PENTAGRAM members O'Keefe and Mayne.

Jourgensen Planning The Last Ministry Album

Billboard.com reports: Ministry's days are numbered, according to group leader Al Jourgensen.

Jourgensen, who has led the group and its numerous side projects since 1981, says that after Ministry finishes its current MasterBaTour, he plans to go right back into the studio for what he says will be "the last Ministry album." And, he promises, this is no cheap ploy to get attention for the band.

"I've got other things to do," Jourgensen explains. "I just started a label (13th Planet Records), and I want to sign some bands and really build it up like I did with WaxTrax in the '80s, not just a vanity label. I think it's time -- and I'll be leaving on the top of my game instead of hanging on too long and doing crappy Aerosmith and Rolling Stones albums 30 years later."

Jourgensen, who lives near Waco, Texas, says that like its two predecessors -- 2004's "Houses of the Mole" and this year's "Rio Grande Blood" -- the final Ministry album will be politically minded blast at the administration of President George W. Bush.

"It's a trilogy," Jourgensen says. "The next one's going to be called 'The Last Sucker,' and it's also about this corrupt administration. That seems to be my muse; everyone seems to think I write real shitty music when a Democrat's in office. So we'll do that one, and then me and George Bush go riding off hand-in-hand, into the sunset."

Jourgensen has plenty to do on the road these days as well. Besides fronting Ministry, he's opening the shows -- which are booked into late July -- with one of his other bands, the Revolting Cocks, whose latest album, "Cocked and Loaded," came out March 7 and features guests such as ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander, the Butthole Surfers' Gibby Haynes and former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra. Jourgensen says that playing in both bands is rewarding -- but tiring.

"It sounded good on paper when I drew it up but, yeah, I'm feeling about 90 right now," he says with a laugh. "But it's cool. I can cut loose with the Cocks and then use the brain on the kind of focused agenda of Ministry, which is pretty much the same as anyone's dichotomous life."

Finnish Heavy Metal Act Lordi Wins Eurovision

In what is big news in Europe, a heavy metal band whose members have been accused of being devil worshippers has won the Eurovision Song Contest, shattering the competition's traditional image. The band from Finland performed its song dressed like characters from a horror movie.

The Eurovision Song Contest has never seen or heard anything quite like this before. But the Finnish band Lordi stormed through their set, demolishing their opponents and the bland reputation of the contest in one fell swoop: and when the votes of viewers and listeners from around Europe and beyond were finally counted up, Lordi had won an easy victory. Even the band leader himself, Mr Lordi, seemed stunned by what they'd achieved. (BBC)

Mr Lordi: "We feel great, think about it, this is weird, this is strange this is interesting. You know think about it, we're a rock band and we just won the pop song contest. That is weird and also Finland won which is kind of nice."

He also hailed the result as "a victory for open-mindedness."

From the moment Lordi won eight points at the start of the voting, Finns watched incredulously as the band continued to lead the field until it hit an all-time Eurovision high of 292 points – more than 40 ahead of Russia. (Belfast Today)

This was indeed a big victory for Finland, which first entered the contest more than forty years ago, but until now had always come away empty-handed.

Since March, when Lordi won the contest for the Finnish entry, many in the highly self-conscious nation feared that the band would damage the country's reputation. Lordi's piece was heatedly debated and the group's exploits regularly hit tabloid headlines. Band leader Mr Lordi said the group may have changed the face of Eurovision for good. "This is proof that there were rock fans watching Eurovision," he said in Athens.

The show attracted a peak viewing audience of 10.8m viewers, or 50% of the total audience, half-an-hour before the contest finale, according to unofficial overnight figures. The contest averaged 8.2m viewers throughout the duration of the show, which was broadcast between 8pm and 11pm.

Finland will now host the 2007 competition.

Avenged Sevenfold and DragonForce On Ozzfest 2006

It comes as little surprise that Avenged Sevenfold have been officially confirmed as the mystery band on the main stage for Ozzfest 2006. The real surprise announcement is that power metal band Dragonforce, recently signed to Roadrunner Records in North America and rumored to be joining Gigantour 2006, has been added as the main stage opener as well.

Ozzy Osbourne is now slated to headline the second stage on three dates (replacing some dates that he was previously thought to be headlining the main stage):

July 8 - San Bernardino, CA's Hyundai Pavilion of Glen Helen
July 11 - San Antonio, TX at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater
July 22 - East Troy, WI at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre

OZZY says, "After 10 years of headlining Ozzfest's main-stage I think it's time for a change. I haven't had a chance to play this close to an audience in years and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to it."

Also announced is that Ozzfest emcee Big Dave and professional Ozzfest party guy, Eddie, have begun their nationwide search visiting 19 of the festival's 26 cities to find the first-ever Miss Ozzfest. The duo will be accepting entries and taking photographs of Miss Ozzfest candidates in each city. Throughout the summer the Ozzfest fans can vote for your favorites at Ozzfest.com. All entries collected from Big Dave and Eddie will be posted for you to vote on. The top three in each city will be awarded FREE tickets to the show in their city, where at some point during the evening's festivities, the three contestants will be presented on stage to the fans who will vote on a winner. Photos of each winning contestant, including the top vote getters from Raleigh and West Palm Beach, will be posted once again on Ozzfest.com, where fans can pick their Miss Ozzfest 2006. Final voting will be held at Ozzfest.com on August 7 and 8. The winning beauty will be awarded the grand prize and receive round trip airfare and accommodations for her and a guest to attend the year's final show August 13 in West Palm Beach where she'll be crowned Miss Ozzfest 2006.

Invocation Of Nehek Break Up

Invocation Of Nehek has called it quits. The Connecticut group released one album with Prosthetic records. Guitarist Robb Cyr comments:

"Over the last 5 years ION has had so many great experiences, and we have met so many awesome people, and we are truly grateful for all of it, we sadly have come to a point where it was just time to move on. Although this is a sad moment for us, we know that it is best. When this band started it was meant just meant to be something fun to do on weekends, ION exceeded all of our expectations, trust me you don't name a band 'Invocation of Nehek' and expect to get a record deal or tour the country. We are all still great friends, and will support each other in any new projects. Keep your eyes peeled because you certainly haven't seen the last of all us. We'd like to thank everyone that we have met along the way and that has helped us out in some way shape or form. It was an amazing experience that we will never forget."

The band will play one final show on June 10th at the Sons of Italy in Torrington CT with Necrosis and Wrenchintheworks, among others.

System of A Down To Go On Hiatus After Ozzfest

MTV.com is reporting that System of a Down will go on hiatus after completing the Ozzfest 2006 tour.

"We're not breaking up," Malakian insisted. "If that was the case, we wouldn't be doing this Ozzfest, because we're a little nervous" about trying to fill Ozzy Osbourne's shoes. Ozzy will be headlining just 10 of this year's Ozzfest dates, with System topping the bill on Ozzy's off days. "We're going to take a very long break after Ozzfest and do our own things," he added. "We've done System for over 10 years, and I think it's healthy for us to get away from it for a while and come back to it later on. So, this is probably going to be ... well, it's not a farewell tour, but it's going to be a little while before we go out again."

Malakian said he couldn't guess just how long System's hiatus will be, other than to say a few years. System of a Down have generally held recording sessions every three years since their self-titled debut in 1998, although the release of the material has been staggered: 2001's Toxicity was followed in 2002 by the outtakes collection Steal This Album!, and in 2005 the band issued the two halves of its double album, Hypnotize/ Mezmerize, five months apart. This fall, Malakian said he'll start work on his next project, Scars on Broadway, a band he's still assembling. He's also in talks to score a feature film, but hasn't inked a deal just yet.

And the rest of the band has other interests, too. Tankian runs his own record label, Serjical Strike, and Odadjian has been talking with members of the Wu-Tang Clan about working together on a project.

"I have a few things lined up that I want to do," Malakian explained. "For me, personally, I've written all the System records from day one, so it's kind of healthy for me to go off and do a few other things and then come back to it, as it is for the rest of the band. Some people would call it a breakup, but we don't really call it that. You know, even U2 took a little time off, and then they came back with a new sound. We're not trying to follow anyone — that's just an example of a band that kind of took a little break and then came back.

Crisis Goes On Indefinite Hiatus

Crisis have announced plans to go an indefinite hiatus, issuing the following statement:

"All of us in Crisis would like to let our very faithful and diehard fans know that the band is going on an indefinite hiatus. We are sorry that our fans will not be hearing any new music from us in the near future. Crisis has had a long and fruitful life thus far. Therefore, we don't feel the need to justify our decision specifically. The band members will be focusing on their personal lives, as well as pursuing other artistic interests. In the meantime we strongly urge our fans to support original and honest artists and their music; a lot of them can be found on The End Records roster. We would especially like to thank our dedicated fans the world over for sticking so closely with us over a span of 12 years and more. We would also like to thank Andreas Katsambas and The End Records crew from the bottom of our hearts for all their support. If Crisis ever thinks about releasing another album it would be a pleasure for us to work with The End again."

Superjoint Ritual Is No More

In a recent interview with Live-Metal.net, SUPERJOINT RITUAL bassist Hank III discussed his new solo album, "Straight to Hell", and revealed that he is working on a new project with SUPERJOINT RITUAL/ex-PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo called ARSON ANTHEM. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:

Live-Metal.net: What is going on with SUPERJOINT RITUAL?

Hank III: "SUPERJOINT is in the grave right now, because someone tried bossing the boss and you NEVER boss the boss. Now he had to learn the hard way, so Philip has laid that band to rest. It might come back. I seriously doubt it. But in the meantime, DOWN is working on their new record and getting ready to be touring here soon. I've got another side project with Philip. I'm playing drums and Philip's is playing guitar. Mike Williams from EYEHATEGOD is screamin' and it's called ARSON ANTHEM. So far we've got eight songs of it recorded. So we're still having fun and making music, just getting in there and jammin', man."

A Dozen Furies Call It Quits

Texas metal/rock band A Dozen Furies have announced their break-up. Winner of MTV's "Battle for Ozzfest" two years ago, the group released an album with Sanctuary Records in 2005. The following statement has been issued:

"There really is no point in drawing this out longer than it needs to be, so I'll try and be quick and to the point. After two amazing short years, A Dozen Furies has called it a day. We could go on and on about all of the reasons why, but when it comes down to it, it's because we've grown apart. I guess a lot of the 'wrong' things fell into place at the 'right' time. I'm sure some might think we were a flash in the pan and now that our 15 seconds is over, we are quitting. Well, most of us have been doing this for close to 10 years and it's just time for some of us to move on. With that said, we would like to express our more sincere thanks to everyone who was with us at any point along the way. All of the fans we've made, friends we've met, bands we toured with, and industry people we've befriended amongst our travels, we'd like to say THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. All of you have helped us achieve in just 2 years something that most bands never get to experience in their entire careers. This will be something that none of us will ever forget, and we hope most of you who did run across our path won't forget as well.

Who knows what will happen with us after the split. Some of us will continue pursuing music, some will move on with the rest of our lives... To end it off, we are holding a farewell show at The Ridglea Metal & Hardcore Fest on Saturday, May 6th at The Ridglea Theatre in Ft. Worth, Texas. There are 3,000 bands playing, only the best of the best of course, so this will be a show you shant miss."

"For those of you who have yet to hear, we at the Winter Solstice camp have decided to call it quits. Centinex Disband

Swedish Death metallers CENTINEX have posted the following message:

"We hereby announce that after 16 years in the business the swedish death metal act Centinex call it quits. This might come as a surprise to many of you, especially after releasing such a strong and critcally acclaimed album as “World Declension”. However, things came to such a point where the only solution was to call it a day. Without going too deep into all the details I can tell you that there are many reasons (personal, musical etc) for this decision and believe me, everything is well thought out.

Hereby we stop all band activities and our farewell show will be the already booked appearance in Eskilstuna, Sweden, on May 13th.

We wanna thank and salute each and everyone out there who have supported us in some way during all these years. Of course all the members will go on with metal, jointly and individually, in various bands and projects. So you will sure hear from us in the near future.

Thanx for your attention in Centinex and remember to keep the flame burning!!

Martin Schulman & Centinex, Avesta, Sweden, April 2nd 2006."

Zao Singer Injured, Band Drops Off Tour

Zao have been forced to drop off of the remaining dates of Ferret Music's "Under The Gun Tour" due to an injury sustained by frontman Daniel Weyandt. Co-Headliners Madball and Remembering Never, in addition to support acts The Banner and Scarlet, will continue the tour as scheduled.

Weyandt broke four bones in his left-hand as a result of a "back-stage mishap." The accident resulted in a sizeable cut that apparently exposed one bone for over 12 hours and became ultimately infected. Three different doctors have ordered the singer to return home immediately and visit a specialist. Fortunately, Weyandt is expected to make a full recovery.

Zao guitarist Scott Mellinger issued the following statement:

"We can't apologize more strongly to the other bands and especially our fans who were planning on seeing us on the remaining dates. We want nothing more than for Dan to get better and we fully intend to crush once again with Dan on the Demon Hunter tour this summer."

Stone Sour Part Ways With Drummer

STONE SOUR, featuring SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor, have posted the following announcement at their MySpace page:

"Things are going really well in the studio and we'll have a more in-depth update next week, but for now, we wanted to let you know about a change in the band. Sadly Joel Ekman, Stone Sour’s original drummer, is no longer going to be part of the band. This is something that we all discussed and feel is best for the five of us and for the future of Stone Sour. This has been the most intense recording process of our career and the next year of touring will be equally, if not more, intense. Our world tour kicks off June 2 in Germany and our goal is to play as many cities and countries as possible. We're in discussions with a few drummers now and will let you know who that person will be as soon as we come to a decision.

We wish the best to Joel and to his family."

Bodies In The Gears Of The Apparatus Break Up

Florida's Bodies In The Gears Of The Apparatus have reportedly called it quits. Formed in 2002, the band has released material with The Spew Records in addition to a split with Despised Icon through Relapse Records. Vocalist Josh Vitale commented on the split:

"We're all very upset to see this band go, but for now, this is the best decision we could decide on. We will all be in other bands, most likely not with each other. We had a lot of critics both positive and negative - both of which made us stronger people and we'd like to send out our thanks to those many who angered and inspired us enough to work harder, moreover, we want to thank everyone who supported this musical project for the past three years. Finally, thank you so much for making this a wonderful and unforgettable experience."

Bodies In The Gears Of The Apparatus were reportedly writing material for their debut full-length and had completed two songs thus far and had planned to play some shows in April, followed by summer touring. In December of last year, Bodies In The Gears Of The Apparatus was rejoined by former drummer Dom Lizzio, who left the band in October.
