At The Gates, the pioneering band of the "Gothenburg style" melodic death metal sound, has announced additional details about the highly anticipated "At War With Reality" comeback album, which is set for release on October 27th in Europe and October 28th in North America via Century Media Records.
Today, the band revealed the cover artwork (shown below), which was designed by Costin Chioreanu of Twilight 13 Media. Chioreanu, who previously worked with bands such as Arch Enemy, Morgoth and Darkthrone, gave the strong lyrical theme of "At War With Reality" a conceptual togetherness with the visuals crafted for this project.
Vocalist/lyricist Tomas Lindberg commented on the album's theme: "The concept of 'At War with Reality' is based on the literary genre called 'Magic Realism.' The main style within this genre is the notion that 'reality' is ever-changing, and needs to be constantly re-discovered and re-conquered. We felt that Costin's artwork style would be the perfect visual contribution to this album, so he became the natural choice..."
Guitarist and main songwriter Anders Björler further explained: "I got in touch with Costin a few years back. I was immediately impressed with his dark and original style. He collaborated on some T-shirt designs for At The Gates as well as designing the album artwork for my Instrumental Project. We realized pretty early on that his style would accompany the music and the concept perfectly."
Additionally, Chioreanu checked in with the following comment: "I have been waiting for this album for almost 20 years and it's the biggest honor for me to illustrate it - As there is no greater achievement for a dreamer than the moment when the dream becomes reality. 'At War With Reality' is by far the most complex visual story I have ever created, from all points of view. From the very first moment the band presented the concept, I found it extremely stunning and at the same time super-challenging. I like to think that visual art and music are tools to explore our minds - to create, to discover and to push the limits. At the Gates, one of my all-time favorite Metal bands, offered me a chance to explore a new dimension." More...
The reactivated At The Gates just wrapped up recording, mixing, and mastering work for comeback album "At War With Reality," and has now confirmed release dates of October 27th in Europe and October 28th in North America via Century Media Records.
With the classic line-up from "Slaughter Of The Soul" (1995), At The Gates held the recording sessions for "At War With Reality" with Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman and then proceeded to mix the material with Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios.
At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg checked in with a report as follows: "We are very excited to finally have finished this new album. An album that we've been working on for over a year now. It's by far the most challenging record that we have made, but it's an honest album and I think that you will feel that it is faithful to the legacy of At The Gates.
"We have, through the process of creating it, been true to ourselves and our art. From hearing the first demos that Anders presented to the band last summer, through the extensive stages of songwriting, pre-production, rehearsals, recording and mixing, we now finally got the finished album in our hands.
"We are very happy to have managed to produce an album that we feel is truly 'us'. Something we can all stand behind one hundred percent. I can't wait 'til you all get to hear it!" More...

Swedish death metal legends At The Gates have announced that they will be embarking on a headlining tour of Europe this December, their first in nearly twenty years. They will be joined on the trek by Triptykon and Morbus Chron. Speaking about the tour, vocalist Tomas Lindberg stated:
"We are very excited for this tour. It will be our first proper tour of Europe since 1996. As we have been playing only festivals in Europe since the reunion in 2008, this will be the first chance for us to meet the fans of Europe in a more intimate environment. Playing live for our own crowd, our own people in smaller clubs is something that is essential to us as a band and we are looking forward to finally being able to deliver a full At The Gates show in this setting, without having to work around the schedules and conditions of bigger festivals. It will also be the first time ever that we will be able to present some new compositions in a live setting - as the new album will be released by then. It's hard and uncompromising and I think the new songs will work great live next to the old songs.
"As for going out together with Triptykon, we couldn't be more thrilled. I have always looked upon the work of Thomas Gabriel Fischer as a great source of inspiration. From naming my first band, Grotesque after a line in a Celtic Frost song back in 1988, to the mighty comeback with his new reincarnation with Triptykon. Seeing them live every day for three weeks will be mind-blowing. More...
In the second official episode of the Metalunderground.com podcast (and third installment overall), hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) discuss two major current topics, one of excitement, and one of general dismay. In case you can’t wade through the whole shebang, we’ve provided timestamps as signposts to help you along the way.
Ever since British extreme pioneers Carcass knocked it out of the park last fall with their long-awaited return “Surgical Steel,” speculation has run rampant regarding a similar comeback effort from a group of contemporaries: Gothenburg metal fathers At The Gates.
Disbanded in 1996 and reformed in 2008 for the specific purpose of touring, At The Gates in January 2014 began teasing fans with cryptic hints of something brewing in the studio. To little surprise but great delight, Century Media Records recently confirmed the band’s signing for a new album titled “At War With Reality,” the first since 1995’s influential “Slaughter Of The Soul.” [00:01:07] Check out your hosts’ wealth of opinions on this anticipated momentous occasion.
On a drearier note, Kevin and Mike next take aim at the embarrassing spectacle of the recent Grammy Awards [00:15:13] and its decidedly out-of-touch grasp on metal culture. From the Best Rock [00:16:10] and Best Metal [00:19:27] Performance categories, to Metallica’s bizarre rendition of “One,” [00:24:47] to the botched broadcasting of a joint performance by Nine Inch Nails and Queens Of The Stone Age, [00:30:43] to the posthumous snubbing of Slayer’s Jeff Hanneman, [00:45:14] fan reactions to the ceremony ranged from the puzzled to the disappointed to the downright insulted. This conversation tackles all three – and then some.

As previously announced, seminal Swedish metallers At The Gates are proud to announce their return to the studio to record the long-awaited follow-up to 1995's "Slaughter Of The Soul."
Due to be released worldwide via Century Media Records in late 2014, this new album, "At War With Reality," features the band's classic lineup from the "Slaughter Of The Soul" era.
Decibel Magazine has now conducted an interview about the album with At The Gates' Tomas Lindberg (vocals). Read the full interview at this location, and excerpts follow.
Decibel: Most people might be expecting the new material to be in the vein of Slaughter of the Soul, but are there any plans to showcase the more angular and progressive influences of the first ATG EP, Gardens of Grief, and first two studio albums as well?
As I said we have gone beyond the idea of making “Slaughter of the Soul Pt. 2,” which was actually never the idea to start with. This is an album that is so full on conceptually and creatively, so involved and ambitious that I am almost compelled to call it pretentious. And that brings me back to the feeling that was with us when we were creating With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness. I’m not saying that this album sounds like that album, but it has that burning urge, the sense of importance that album is trying to portray. As I have always stated, we are an honest band, a band that is very focused on being true to ourselves and never follow any trends or try to portray a given perception of what people want us to be. What we decided on was really to let the music take us where it had to go, to go “all in” so to say. To answer your question, the record will be filled with a lot of the Slayer worship and riffage that is Slaughter of the Soul, but people will also recognize the more dark, melodic side that was With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness, and maybe some of the more pretentious arrangements that was part of our early career.
Decibel: The bar for “death metal comebacks” is now Surgical Steel. Is At the Gates prepared to meet that? Not to mention the legacy of Slaughter of the Soul? More...

Seminal Swedish metallers At The Gates are back! Following two cryptic teaser vidoes, the pioneers of the "Gothenburg style" melodic death metal sound have officially announced that they are working on a comeback studio album with the classic line-up of their latest masterpiece effort from 1995, "Slaughter Of The Soul."
The album is expected to be released worldwide by the end of 2014 via new label partner Century Media Records. The band comments:
"So, here we are almost 24 years since the birth of At The Gates, and some 18+ years since our latest album 'Slaughter Of The Soul.' A lot of years have passed and we have embarked on some life-changing reunion tours and shows the last couple of years.
"So, why make a new album you might ask, and why now? Well, what we learned from the last couple of years hanging out and playing shows together, is that we enjoy what we do to the fullest extent. We love playing music together, and we love to hang out as friends. But, as a musician, we constantly write new music. It's a huge part of our identities.
"We are fully aware that we have made some very drastic statements in interviews as well as the closing words on the DVD about the longevity of At The Gates, but things change, situations change and people change. When Anders sent the first song last summer, we had zero expectations of the outcome. We only knew one thing - That it sounded amazing! At the time we weren't even sure there would be an album, but as things progressed, more songs came into existence, and we knew we were on to something great. More...
Earlier this week At The Gates released a brief teaser trailer for "something" happening in 2014.
Now the band has posted another trailer online which showcases what is clearly some studio time, apparently revealing the band is working on a new album and follow-up to the legendary "Slaughter of the Soul." Check it out below.
The legendary Swedish metal band At The Gates will be playing this year's Maryland Death Fest, but the band hasn't released a proper studio full-length since 1995's "Slaughter of the Soul."
Now the band is teasing something for the coming year through a tantalizing video clip, available below. So At The Gates fans - what do YOU think it is? New album? A proper reunion tour? Something else?
The Northern Darkness Festival, which would have featured At The Gates, Graveworm, Napalm Death, and many more, has now been cancelled. The organizers of the fest issued the following statement:
"Today we must deliver the disappointing news that The Northern Darkness Festival has been cancelled. The aim of the festival was to bring the best in unsigned and international death and black metal artists from around the world to a new event in the UK more akin to the European festival line-ups.
"Unfortunately despite a lot of interest from bands wanting to play from all over the world we have not seen the same level of interest from the general public and to date ticket sales have been extremely disappointing, and it is with this in mind we have to make to unfortunate decision not to continue with the event.
"In short events like this can not take place if people do not want to come and support them, with less than 2 months to go until the event date less than 15% of available tickets have been sold and the majority of those were from outside the local area and even other countries.
"We wanted to give the North East a place on the metal festival scene and had hoped to grow the festival over the coming years into a major international event but without fans wanting to come and support an event of this size we are left with no option but to cancel.
"We would like to thank those that showed support for the event and to all the bands billed as well as those who applied to take part in the unsigned band competition and those who did purchase a ticket in advance. The UK does have some stellar alternative festivals with Bloodstock and Damnation festival but it appears the UK was not quite ready for The Northern Darkness.
"Tickets purchased directly will be refunded automatically over the next week, if you purchased your ticket from the venue you will be able to get a refund from them. Please allow 7 days for your refund to reach you before contacting us. We anticipate all refunds will be completed within 7 days and you will be contacted on the email address you gave when purchasing your ticket. If you have not received you refund within 7 days please email us: firstname.lastname@example.org."
