The ProgPower USA Experience From A Newbie

If there was ever an event for a first time festival goer, it would be ProgPower USA. Unfortunately, fans here are spoiled by the incredible privileges, some of which could never be properly duplicated by any of the huge European festivals. In Atlanta, you won’t find camping sites, 80,000 people and huge immense lines for signing sessions. What you will find is a community of about 1200 well-educated and well versed fans that throw an amazing party and represent some of the nicest people from all over the U.S. and the world. However, it is a party which also includes the many members of the best bands you can find in the world (not just those who are playing) all within an incredibly intimate setting of a venue that is as unmatched in sound quality as it is fan friendly. For its first 12 years, ProgPower USA seemed out of my reach for reasons I cannot fully explain or comprehend (stupidity comes to mind). However, lucky #13 consisted of a lineup which I personally felt was the strongest in its history (though called “weak” by progressive fan standards), and was perfect for my very first taste of the ProgPower USA experience. As soon as this lineup was announced last year, I drew up the battle plan to attend. The ability to see Serenity, Mystic Prophecy, Pretty Maids and so many others make their debut U.S. performances was something of a dream for this aging fan boi. Topping it off was a headline performance my current favorite Epica, so finding a way to get there became mandatory. What transpired exceeded all my hopes and expectations, a dream I wish I never woke from. (For complete reviews, check out Metal Underground.com's road reports on Day One, Day Two and the pre-show with Nightwish & Kamelot by colleague Progressivity_In_All.) More...

ProgPower USA XIII: Day Two

The morning of September 15th was a bit hazy for most attendees, as the Artmore post-show celebrations had famously ensued when Epica finished up Day One's show at 2:30 in the AM. Really, where else were you going to go after getting 12 straight hours of show time, knowing that the bands you just saw on stage would be mingling with you in the courtyard? It just didn't make sense to go home. Nightwish and Kamelot were off on their tour after playing the pre-ProgPower show on Thursday.

One of the other fun things about ProgPower is that it brings out members of other bands who aren't playing, but just want to see a great show. In the courtyard later in the day, I would run into Pyramaze vocalist Urban Breed (ex-Tad Morose) as well as Oklahoma-based progressive metal band Vangough. I met the members of Vangough at a Mexican restaurant a block up from the venue for lunch and an interview about their most recent album, "Kingdom of Ruin," and their future. Festivities for Day Two kicked off at 2:30 in the afternoon. Brace yourselves, because this is going to be a long write-up. More...

Primal Fear Guitarist Karlsson To Miss Tour

German power metal band Primal Fear announced that guitarist Magnus Karlsson will be temporarily absent from the upcoming Metal Nation Tour due to family obligations. The band has recruited Mystic Prophecy guitarist Constantine (also with Constantine & Nightfall) (seen below).

The following was posted on the band's Facebook page:

On a less happy note we need to announce that Magnus will be temporarily absent from the forthcoming live shows due to family obligations. Don't ask reg. the matter, this is serious and very private - Bottom Line!

It's tough for us to replace Magnus on the next shows as a guitarist, but it's even harder to replace his wonderful character. We've searched for the last couple of days for the best possible substitute and decided to recruit Constantine - a 24 year old phenomenal talent from Greece. Check out his FB page and his songs and give him a warm welcome. After the current rehearsals we're sure he will NOT disappoint!

CU on tour - Unbreakable!

Mystic Prophecy Recording New Album

Greek/German heavy metal act Mystic Prophecy is entering the studio once more. For the coming months Mystic Prophecy will be recording the band's 7th studio album entitled "Raven Lord." The album is going to be the first release with new drummer Claudio Sisto, who joined Mystic Prophecy in June 2010. "Raven Lord" will be released on October 28th, 2011 through Massacre records. During the same period the band is planning on touring and hitting most festival stages around Europe.

Recordings will take place in Prophecy Music Factory studios and production duties will be handled by R.D. Liapakis with the rest of the band. There will be 11 songs on the album, and artwork will be delivered by Jonas Kawalek who has worked with the band in the past for the "Satanic Curses" album.

Commenting on the creative process of the new album, band main man R.D. Liapakis stated:

"Mystic Prophecy is now more than ever in a turning point in their history. Fireangel overcame our expectations and our fans have shown us their support in the best possible way. The tour we did with Stratovarius gave the band the chance to get a very good sense of unity and groove which is generated by every member contributing to whole which finally is presented to the fans. This is what will make a difference in our upcoming album.

"The feeling of unity, amongst us, enhances the effect we bring out. More power, more feeling, more combined ideas, more diversity, but all in the thread that goes through it all which is Mystic Prophecy. Two minds work better than one, so imagine all five of us contributing equally to the final result. I am confident that we'll do our best to express what's in our souls and hope the fans like it. Up till now we seem to have a common ground so this album will only enforce this bond with our fans and help us create new ones."

Mystic Prophecy Announces New Drummer

German metal band Mystic Prophecy has announced that their search for a new drummer is over. After months of auditioning and listening to numerous drummers the band finally got the right man for the job. According to his biography this is what Claudio had to say:

"Hey! My name is Claudio Sisto, I'm half Italian but was born in Southern Germany. I got infected with the Heavy Metal virus as a child, in 1996 I had my first drum lessons and so far I played in bands like Contracrash, Mantikor and Ungehobelt. With Contracrash I released an album, rocked the Bang your Head Festival in 2008 and also toured Germany and Finland. In May 2010 I joined Mystic Prophecy claiming the vacant drum kit's seat and I can't wait to kick ass with the guys!"

Mystic Prophecy Seeks New Drummer

The German/Greek band Mystic Prophecy is looking for someone to take over the drum sticks.
In friendship the band has bid their farewell to their temporary drummer Matt C., who supported the band during their tour with Stratovarius. According to the band, "Because of occupational and private reasons it's not possible for Matt to remain with them permanently. Mystic Prophecy are currently looking for a guy who feels confident to play their material and is seriously interested in becoming their new colleague. Please send your convincing application to martin@deathsquad.de or rdlia@aol.com."

Mystic Prophecy Posts Tour Journal Online

German metal band Mystic Prophecy has posted new tour journals from their tour with Stratovarius and Tracedawn at this location. An excerpt from the most recent entry from their January 20th show in Switzerland at the Z7 is as follows:

"Now it's time for us to go on stage, intro, 'Across the Gates...,' 'Masters of Sin' ... and then I usually talk to the audience. In which language? English or German? Never mind! German is okay. 'Hello Switzerland!' ... I barely hear anything. What the hell... 'Hello Switzerlaaaaand!!!' ... there is a murmuring among the crowd. Just like what happened to Tracedawn, only a few fans making some noise. Okay, we don't give up so soon. Pedal to the metal! Slowly the Swiss are warming up and look, after five songs we made it. They're cheering and clapping."

"During 'To the Devil I pray' Matt tries to tell me something and he points upwards. When I look this direction I see that there's an open window, three Tracedawn guys are standing there, making faces. And in the middle of them, there's their bassist presenting his bare manhood... hahaha. The guys are priceless and we're cracking up with laughter onstage."
