SXSW 2014 Day Three: Dio Tribute, Metalsucks
Friday, March 14, 2014, my third day attending SXSW music festivities, started just after 3 pm. This event was my only excursion outside of live music. Members of Landshark Promotions and DJ Chuck Loesch of 101X "No Control Radio" premiered a CD of the Ronnie James Dio tribute album "This Is Your Life." The three-person panel presented each track from the forthcoming recording featuring an all-star lineup of modern and classic metal artists. It felt good singing along to these majestic reworkings done in the name of charity. 100% of the proceeds will go towards Wendy Dio's "Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund" .

"If you find musicians -and former members- from bands like Manowar (Rhino, Ross The Boss) , Cage (Sean Peck) , Empires Of Eden (Stu Marshall), Lizzy Borden and Halford (Mike Davis) together, nothing can go wrong.
"Death Dealer was formed a few years ago and is a U.S. metal all star band that already released debut album 'War Master' in June 2013 as a CD by Steel Cartel Records. Now we release a limited vinyl version of 500 pieces in the Gatefold.
"Flawless power/heavy metal in the most classic style, with Sean's strongly High-Pitched-Screams which rules through the complete album. Sublime lead guitar by Maestro Ross 'The Boss' Friedman tightes double bass drumming of Mr. Rhino transport every Headbanger of the planet into an endless thrill. Hymns like the speedy band hymn full of power and aggression, driven by double bass title track or the stamping monster 'Hammer Down' are only one part of the absolute highlights which this album has to offer. Death Dealer doesn’t have to hide behind the big names of the individual members because it has everything to offer for the followers of traditional Metal culture.
"For all people who roll out every time the prayer rug to music monuments like 'Painkiller,' will have something to look forward to through 'War Master.'" More...

Sunday Old School: Corrosion Of Conformity
Throughout the history of heavy music, there have been many influential bands. Some see their signature sound copied by hundreds, others only one album which can spawn a movement, but few can go from one genre to another and remain just as popular and important as they were before. One of the new bands who can legitimately claim this, is Raleigh, North Carolina’s own, Corrosion of Conformity. Corrosion of Conformity, or C.O.C. for short, formed in 1982 by bassist Mike Dean, who would also handle vocal duties, along with drummer Reed Mullin and guitarist, Woody Weatherman. After recruiting vocalist Eric Eycke, the group released their first full length album, "Eye for an Eye" in 1984. The debut featured twenty tracks, including a cover of the Fleetwood Mac song, "Green Manalishi," which had also been popularised by Judas Priest, but timed in at just over half an hour. This would prove to be their only album featuring Eycke, who left the band following the record’s release and so vocal duties were shared by Reed and Mullin on their sophomore album, "Animosity." The album saw the band begin to mix their hardcore roots with the emerging thrash metal genre, creating one of the first examples of crossover thrash in the process and was received very well, with several of their songs going on to be covered by such high profile artists as Metallica and Mr. Bungle.
It was decided by the band that in order to progress, they would need a new singer so that the music would be paired with one voice and so they hired Simon Bob Sinister, formerly of Ugly Americans, who performed with C.O.C. on their next EP, "Technocracy," which veered closer to thrash metal than their previous work. Despite this noisy output however, things were soon to go quiet for the band, when Mike Dean decided to leave in 1987, followed closely by Simon Bob. More...
