Toxik Reunite

Legendary New York progressive thrashers TOXIK are back. Following the recent re-release of their two albums, TOXIK has reunited and is currently rehearsing with the lineup consisting of:

Mike Sanders - Vocals
Josh Christian - Guitar
Brian Bonini - Bass
Lou Caldarola - Drums

The band's original drummer Tad Leger is not taking part in the reunion because he's very busy with other projects - as a guitarist.

Poland's Metal Mind Productions last month released the reissues of the classic TOXIK albums "World Circus" (1988) and "Think This" (1989). Both CDs came in a new digipack edition on golden discs, digitally remastered using 24-bit technology, and are limited to a hand-numbered 2,000 copies. Each title includes two bonus tracks.

Ozzfest 2007 Will Be Free

2/9 UPDATE: You can watch the Ozzfest 2007 Press Conference online now.

OZZY and SHARON OSBOURNE and tour producer LIVE NATION broke the news today at the Concert Industry Consortium in Los Angeles that their 12th annual hard rock spectacular--a 25-date extravaganza launching July 7 in Los Angeles--is pulling the plug on ticket prices and giving the power back to the fans calling this summer's OZZFEST "FreeFest." The other OZZFEST 2007 cities as of now are San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio, Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Hartford, Charlotte, Atlanta, West Palm Beach, Nashville. Note: a final confirmed list of cities and dates is forthcoming.

"For the last few years," says SHARON, "ticket prices have steadily climbed as artists demand more and more money for summer tours. We certainly want everybody to make money, however we also want the kids to be able to afford to come out and have an incredible experience. If we continued with the traditional touring festival model, we would have no choice but to raise ticket prices again this year."

Cited as "one of rock's biggest juggernauts" in the cover feature of Sunday's New York Times' "Arts and Leisure" section (6/25/06), OZZFEST and Live Nation will turn to sponsors to provide added support for the festival's new incarnation. This summer's OZZFEST will provide select sponsors with a unique opportunity to engage fans one-on-one utilizing one of music's best known brands.

"We're reaching the same point we did years ago when kids no longer wanted to pay for overpriced CDs," compares Sharon. "As a result, they found alternative ways of getting music. That's what's happening with summer touring in this country, it's out-pricing itself. We started this and we want to keep it and we want to make it bigger and bigger each year by getting bigger sponsors to be involved with the festival and underwriting the festival. That's what it's about."

"For the past 11 years, music fans have made OZZFEST the most successful and enduring rock music festival in the United States," said Jason Garner, Live Nation President of North American Concerts. "What better way to say 'Thank You' to the music fans who have made this possible than inviting them to attend OZZFEST for free."

To gain entry into the event, fans will go to www.ozzfest.com or www.livenation.com to find links that will direct them to special sponsor sites where tickets can be secured. More details regarding the process are forthcoming. More...

Scarlet Call It A Day After Singer Departs

After 4 years since their debut on Ferret Music, Richmond's Scarlet has officially called it quits. This decision was primarily based on the recent departure of second singer, Brandon Roundtree.

"We feel it would be unfair to fans, and to ourselves, to try and continue with yet another singer."

Andreas, Bryan, and Randy would like to thank all of their Fans, Ferret Records, and former members, Jon Spencer, Dan Tulloh and Chris Hagen, for some of the best times in their lives to this point. Despite the break up, Andreas and Randy, who co-wrote and produced all Scarlet records, are exercising their desire to create non-metal music. They have currently formed a new band entitled Coworker, and have been in the studio recording new material. You can check out Coworker on their MySpace page.

Scarlet leave us with a limited edition MCD 'Something To Lust About', and 2 full length albums, 'Cult Classic' and the foreboding 'This Was Always Meant To Fall Apart'.

Rage Against the Machine to Reunite

Billboard has reported the following on Tom Morello's one man side project, The Nightwatchman, on Audioslave's current state of affairs, and on a possible Rage Against the Machine reunion:

Guitarist Tom Morello takes the mic for the first time on "One Man Revolution," his debut album as the Nightwatchman. Due April 24 via Epic, the 13-track set was produced by Brendan O'Brien and sports acoustic-based compositions that are a far cry from the heavy guitar rock Morello has purveyed in Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave.

The artist has been utilizing the Nightwatchman moniker for the past three years for performances, and has of late been hosting a Tuesday night residency at Los Angeles' Hotel Cafe. Among the guests that have dropped by recently are System Of A Down's Serj Tankian, Cypress Hill's Sen Dog and Perry Farrell.

Morello will tour this spring, including an appearance at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, in mid-March. But perhaps of most interest to hardcore fans are rumors that Rage Against The Machine may be reuniting for the first time in six-plus years to play the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this spring. Man Killed Outside Hardcore Show In New Jersey

A man was killed following a fight outside Club Deep on Sunday evening in Asbury Park, NJ. The victim was 25 year-old James Morrison, an Iraq veteran. Morrison was reportedly at the club to attend a show featuring Ramallah, COA, and Wisdom In Chains. The altercation apparently began inside the club then continued outside on the street, where police found Morrison on the ground at around 6 pm. After being taken to the hospital, Morrison was pronounced dead at roughly 6:30 pm. Asbury Park Press has an article on the incident here.

For their part, Ramallah has issued the following statement:

"None of Ramallah was involved, nor did we see anything that happened. We also did not know the kid that was killed. We have been blamed, lumped in with whoever was involved, and received tons of negative emails about what happened. None of this is our fault, we were supposed to play a show and didn't. Most of the people voicing their opinions were also not at the show and know even less about what happened than we do."

Steve Smyth Receives Kidney Transplant

Following successful kidney transplant surgery in December, guitarist Steve Smyth (Nevermore, Dragonlord, ex-Testament, etc.) issues the following statement:

"The time has finally come to share a very important piece of news, directly related to my health. On December 12 th, 2006, I had a successful kidney transplant! After 6 straight months on dialysis, changes to my lifestyle and diet, and a very thorough search for a suitable donor, by early August 2006, we had a preliminary match. Several rounds of blood and tissue typing tests had to be subsequently performed to ensure we were a perfect match for transplant; the main reason for my hesitance in saying anything publicly during those months.

The donor shall remain nameless, but my gratitude to him for his selfless act of kindness and friendship will endure forever! Thank you so much, you have no idea how much this means to me! I am now on the road to recovery, as they say. This is mainly requiring a lot of adjustment to medications I will be on for the rest of my life, a small price to pay to be free from dialysis, and the restrictions it places on a person, both mentally and physically. I had no idea how much freedom I took for granted before all of this hit. 2006 was a big revelation of the frailty of human life for me, something I will not take for granted again.

Where does all this lead to next? I’ve been advised by my doctors that I will not be able to travel in any capacity for the next 6 months, as I have to adjust to immunosuppressant drugs to fight any possible form of rejection of the kidney, and my body needs time to recover from this operation, as well as dietary and lifestyle changes. All things that only make one stronger!

Obviously, my health must come first, but of huge importance to me is my loyalty to the rest of Nevermore, and as soon as I am deemed fit and ready to hit the road again, I will. I’ve already written 4-5 songs in various stages for the next Nevermore record, when the time comes to do one.

My immediate plans are to finish The EssenEss Project, my instrumental debut album collaboration with bass player/composer Steve Hoffman, and special guest drummer, Atma Anur, and find a suitable label to release the album, and get this album heard, finally! It’s been a long road, most recently delayed by my health issues. I am glad to finally be getting this on to the mix stage within the next month. For more updates on The EssenEss Project, please check in at www.theessenessproject.com and our related forum. We have lots of news upcoming, as we confirm the next phases of the record, including mixing duties, mastering duties, and artwork, and finally, what label will release it. Interested parties in this last area, please contact me at: steve@stevesmyth.com

I am also set to launch my internet guitar lesson business within the coming weeks. This will be a “live via webcam” lesson, all things that would happen in a regular live lesson with me will remain intact; written and audio/video examples, and direct focus on your goals as a musician are my aim. If you are interested in pursuing lessons with me, please contact me at: steve@stevesmyth.com with INTERNET GUITAR LESSONS in the title. I will include you on a mailing list due to go out this week, with full details on the lessons, how they will be run, cost, scheduling, etc. I look forward to teaching you!

Please stay tuned to www.stevesmyth.com or www.myspace.com/stevesmyth for further updates, or my forum on Ultimate Metal, as all further updates will come from any of these locations. I told everyone I would fight this, and be back! Bring on 2007, I’m ready!"

Murder One Call It Quits

MURDER ONE, the British band featuring vocalists Paul Catten (ex-MEDULLA NOCTE) and John Loughlin (RAGING SPEEDHORN), bassist Jules McBride (ex-PULKAS), guitarists Mark Seddon (ex-MEDULLA NOCTE) and Dan Marshall, and drummer Jamie Airns, has issued the following update:

"Today and for the long, forseeable future, MURDER ONE have called it a day. No argument, no bullshit 'musical differences'....we just cannot continue. We're bold enough to say... 'No-one gives a fuck about the band any more!'... and we can deal with that.

"As a unit, we've never been better friends, sounded better and the new material was shaping up to be fine, BUT after spending the last 2-3 years fairly inactive due to constant misguidance and lethargy, we felt enough was enough. We shall all be continuing in other projects.

"Being in a band can drain you all of your dignity and self respect in the end. Each member has been through this very experience before and we intend on making sure it doesn't happen again.

"To the people who stuck with us, we're eternally grateful.... And to those who wasted our time, and drained our enthusiasm and interest in something we truly believed in....thanks for fuck all."

Previously planned tour dates with Textures in late February are presumed cancelled due to the breakup.

As previously reported, Murder One singer Paul Catten nearly died during a routine appendectomy around Christmas of 2006, but has now recovered from the surgery.

Elis Announces New Singer

Liechtenstein-based gothic metal group ELIS - whose lead singer, Sabine Dünser , who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on July 7, 2006 during rehearsal and passed away the following day in hospital - has issued the following update:

"Now the time has come to disclose the secret about our new singer! Sandra Schleret will do the vocals for ELIS in the future! Sandra comes from Innsbruck (Austria) and stood behind the microphone for various bands, among others for DREAMS OF SANITY and SIEGFRIED. She did also guest appearances for SAMAEL. She impressed us with her voice and her personality and we guess that she fits perfect to ELIS!

"We want to thank all of the candidates once again dearly and we wish all of you the best of luck on your further path!"

ELIS's latest album, "Griefshire", was released in Europe on November 24 via Napalm Records. The recordings for the CD were completed prior to the death of Dünser , who came up with the original concept for the album.

Dünser was born June 27, 1977 and joined ELIS, then still known as ERBEN DER SCHOPFUNG, in 2001.

The follow-up to 2004's "Dark Clouds in a Perfect Sky", "Griefshire" was completed at Mastersound Studios in Stuttgart with producer Alexander Krull (ATROCITY, LEAVES' EYES).

Haste Calls It Quits

Roughly a year and a half after going on hiatus (and getting dropped by Century Media Records), Alabama's Haste has permanently disbanded. The band has issued the following statement:

"This has been one of the most amazing experiences of our lives but we have all come to the point where it is time to move on. A simple thank you does not express the gratitude we feel for everyone who has supported us over the years. We can't possibly list everyone by name who has been important to us as a band, but you know who you are. I promise that we very much appreciate everything that you have done for us. Haste has been a huge part of all of our lives and we are all very sad to see it go, but it is time have some closure to this part of our lives. We have a couple songs (plus the "Back In Black" cover) that we recorded right before we went on hiatus that we will be posting in the next couple of days. Thanks again and maybe we'll run into you kids again soon."

Murder One Singer Has 'Near Death' Experience

Murder One singer Paul Catten nearly died during routine surgery. The band has issued the following update:

"The future of Murder One continued to be cursed as vocalist Paul Catten recently ended up on a Life Support Machine after routine surgery for his appendix went terribly wrong.

Paul was taken into hospital for suspected appendicitus shortly before xmas. After 24 hours observation it was decided to carry out the normally routine surgery on the Sunday morning. At 12 30pm on the Sunday, Paul was given a full anaesthetic and immediately suffered a severe allergic reaction, which resulted in a cardiac arrest. Once resuscitated and his condition stabilised, the appendix was removed and Paul was put into a drug-induced coma for 24 hours and kept on a Life Support Machine for the duration. He eventually woke at 9 30pm on the Monday. He remained in hospital for several days as to recover from both trauma and surgery.

He is now fully recovered, though still shaken and currently looking forward to the bands tour with Textures in late Feb.

The curse continues.

Original Heathen Vocalist Passes Away

Sam Kress, the original vocalist of acclaimed San Francisco Bay Area thrashers HEATHEN and former co-editor of early '80s underground fanzine Whiplash, passed away several days ago. The cause of his death has not been released.

In a recent posting on his blog, Whiplash co-founder Brian Lew had the following to say about Sam Kress:

"Sam and I created a metal 'zine called Whiplash. Basically, Sam was more the business guy and I was more the creative guy and we worked well together... We also spent a lot of time hanging out with other metalhead friends... Listening to metal, drinking, being young and stupid. I can't even guess how many times I crashed on his couch.

"While in New York, Sam had befriended a guy starting a record label called Torrid. Long story short, Sam helped broker the release of EXODUS' seminal debut album 'Bonded By Blood' on the Torrid / Combat Records label in 1985.

"I've always considered 'Bonded By Blood' to be THE defining album of the Bay Area old metal scene. No disrespect to METALLICA's 'Kill 'Em All', but METALLICA's songs were primarily written before the band relocated from SoCal to S.F.; EXODUS were 100% Bay Area born and bred. East Bay OG. EXODUS raged the hardest and Sam and I were right there with them.

"Sam and I are thanked side-by-side in the liner notes of several old metal albums, including METALLICA's 'Ride The Lightning' and EXODUS' 'Bonded By Blood'. We were metal bruthas and back then that meant A LOT."

Transgressor Are Reunited And Recording

Legendary American experimental thrash band Transgressor has reunited and is currently recording their first album since 1990.

Formed in 1987 from the ashes of seminal New Jersey metal band Chaos, Transgressor was made up of guitarist A. Cid, bassist Jonby, guitarist Vor, and drummer Vis. Transgressor recorded their first demo, "Rupita Oing" in 1988 and quickly rose to prominence, opening shows for the likes of Planet Dread, American Angel, and Trouble. The following year, Transgressor released their self-titled debut ep through the HOTWAX America label. The band’s reputation grew quickly, as did the comparisons to VoiVod, thanks to their experimental sound and unpredictable live shows. The band was one of the first thrash bands to incorporate a true multi-media experience into their live shows, which impressed audiences everywhere they played. Transgressor was prepared to tour Europe in 1991 with Whiplash, but the tour never materialized as the band split, due to creative differences.

After spending 16 years apart, band members A.Cid and Vis recently reunited in October at a NYC Celtic Frost show and decided to pick up where the band left off. Lead guitarist Vor will be laying down lead guitar parts and original bassist Jonby is also slated to take part in this highly anticipated spring 2007 release. For impatient fans who can not wait any longer, the band plans on releasing scratch tracks for the album on www.transgressor.us.

Trail Of Tears Loses Members

With the imminent release of "Existentia" on January 30th, 2007 in North America, Napalm recording artists Trail Of Tears are in a bit of a quandary, and much speculation has ensued. Therefore, founding vocalist Ronny Thorsen has released this official statement:

"The following lines are written in the attempt of clarifying the news that have been circulating in the past few days. There is really no easy way of telling this, so I will try to explain to the best of my ability.

On the 26th of November, Trail of Tears completed a 10-date tour of Mexico, a tour which was in large part ridden with organisational problems and resulted in a severe financial loss for everyone involved. As a result of this, I was called to the band hotel on the morning of November 28th, asking for a meeting by the remaining members. Arriving to the hotel, I am instead given a message, lasting a mere two minutes, that because of the situation they have decided to end the band effective immidiately. The decision has been made entirely without my consultation and approval, and thus Trail of Tears is NOT dead and will continue in a new shape and formation.

Needless to say, I am very disappointed by the decision and the way that this has been handled by the leaving members. I have tried my very best best reasoning with them, stressing that the timing could not be worse and that in fact they are violating future obligations with a decision made in a moment of frustration in the aftermath of this tour. I have even offered to cover the several-thousand-euros financial loss out of my own pocket in order for them not to worry about paying their bills and so that we can focus on our already-agreed obligations towards label, tour organisors and the countless people involved. This was not accepted; however, they made sure of giving me all their account numbers before running back to Norway.

I am truly ashamed by the lack of insight, understanding, and responsability the leaving members have portrayed with this decision, with absolute disregard to the fans who have bought tickets for the upcoming tour, which we now have to cancel, and to all the parties involved who have invested a large amount of work and money in the upcoming release, Existentia . The decision to leave a band is an individual choice and I respect that to the fullest, but it does under no circumstances justify the leaving members violating obligations and making decisions for others, going public with something that has not been approved.

Despite the situation, I want to thank the leaving members, each and every one of you, for the amazing times we have shared; I will always consider you my brothers, friends and family.

Great chapters have been written and more are in the making.

This is not the end!"

Lost Dimebag Track Unearthed And Posted Online

Dan McNew, the organizer of the Ride for Dime bike rally in honor of late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, has posted the following message on the RideForDime.com web site:

"We all know Dimebag's musical roots were in country western music, and we all know what a great sense of humor he had. And last but not least, Dime supported the local music scene in Dallas and would sometimes record with local musicians. I ran into one of those musicians, 'Throbbin Donnie Rodd' tonight [Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006] in a club who told me the story of how Dimebag sat in on a recording session with him and recorded this country western song called 'Country Western Transvestite Whore'. Dime plays lead guitar and lead vocals. I just wanted to pass this song on to everyone. Enjoy!"
