2/9 UPDATE: You can watch the Ozzfest 2007 Press Conference online now.
OZZY and SHARON OSBOURNE and tour producer LIVE NATION broke the news today at the Concert Industry Consortium in Los Angeles that their 12th annual hard rock spectacular--a 25-date extravaganza launching July 7 in Los Angeles--is pulling the plug on ticket prices and giving the power back to the fans calling this summer's OZZFEST "FreeFest." The other OZZFEST 2007 cities as of now are San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio, Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Hartford, Charlotte, Atlanta, West Palm Beach, Nashville. Note: a final confirmed list of cities and dates is forthcoming.
"For the last few years," says SHARON, "ticket prices have steadily climbed as artists demand more and more money for summer tours. We certainly want everybody to make money, however we also want the kids to be able to afford to come out and have an incredible experience. If we continued with the traditional touring festival model, we would have no choice but to raise ticket prices again this year."
Cited as "one of rock's biggest juggernauts" in the cover feature of Sunday's New York Times' "Arts and Leisure" section (6/25/06), OZZFEST and Live Nation will turn to sponsors to provide added support for the festival's new incarnation. This summer's OZZFEST will provide select sponsors with a unique opportunity to engage fans one-on-one utilizing one of music's best known brands.
"We're reaching the same point we did years ago when kids no longer wanted to pay for overpriced CDs," compares Sharon. "As a result, they found alternative ways of getting music. That's what's happening with summer touring in this country, it's out-pricing itself. We started this and we want to keep it and we want to make it bigger and bigger each year by getting bigger sponsors to be involved with the festival and underwriting the festival. That's what it's about."
"For the past 11 years, music fans have made OZZFEST the most successful and enduring rock music festival in the United States," said Jason Garner, Live Nation President of North American Concerts. "What better way to say 'Thank You' to the music fans who have made this possible than inviting them to attend OZZFEST for free."
To gain entry into the event, fans will go to www.ozzfest.com or www.livenation.com to find links that will direct them to special sponsor sites where tickets can be secured. More details regarding the process are forthcoming.
As OZZFEST's founder and namesake, OZZY OSBOURNE will make his triumphant return to the headlining position on this year's mainstage after surprising fans last year by performing on the down-and-dirty second stage at a handful of dates. Audiences can expect the Prince of Darkness to unveil new songs from his forthcoming studio album, OZZY's first disc of new material since 2001. While the rest of the in-progress bill is under wraps, Sharon points out, "we have bands committed, but we're hoping that after today's announcement we'll have a whole influx of artists who want to be a part of something this ground breaking. We know there aren't any major headlining acts that would tour all summer for nothing, but we're confident we can turn some of the genre's biggest bands on to what we're doing and have them come out to play a date or two. If they're in town and want the rush of performing in front of 20,000 frenzied kids, they're more than welcome to join us. They can sell their t-shirts, CDs and whatever else they've got. They're also welcome to book their own shows in local venues on the day of OZZFEST. I'm not stopping them. People have to be creative and think of alternatives."
Since 1996, OZZFEST has been a virtual breeding ground for rising bands. The festival has been instrumental in igniting the careers of platinum-selling artists like System of a Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Incubus, Slipknot, Queens of the Stoneage and Godsmack. Along with supporting bands on the rise including Avenged Sevenfold, Mudvayne, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and Lacuna Coli, among others.
"OZZFEST was created to keep this genre of music alive by showcasing new talent," states Sharon. "You better believe we're going to keep perpetuating that by hand-picking compelling new bands that are hungry for OZZFEST's career-making exposure."
MTV.com adds this important little tidbit in their article on the free Ozzfest:
When asked if this would be the final Ozzfest, Sharon responded, "Hell, no!"
"I signed a pact with my wife and the devil," Ozzy added.

Yeah. $6 a bottle of water, etc. Seriously though, it does raise some more questions for me. Like is this actually "free lawn tickets"? I can't imagine them trying to ration or give out the premium/pavilion tickets for free. I only paid $10 for my lawn ticket last year on a promotion. I don't think people b**** about the lawn seats being so expensive - just the pavilion seats, so for now, it's an excellent PR move anyway. We'll have to wait for clarification to see what the real impact is...

you have to pay attention to that little part where they say you go to the sponsor sites to get tix. Odds are you will have to pony up for something from Hot Topic to get a ticket, or subscribe to a mag for a year. All in all a free tour is cool, but there is always a catch!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ozzy Osbourne surprised the music industry on Tuesday with plans to stage this year's Ozzfest, his annual U.S. summer hard-rock extravaganza, as a first-of-its kind free event.
The 12th annual rock festival headlined by the onetime reality TV star and self-described Prince of Darkness will kick off July 27 in the Los Angeles area and play 25 dates, Osbourne and his wife/manager, Sharon, told a news conference.
The announcement, which opened with Osbourne spray-painting the word "FREE" in black letters across an Ozzfest 2007 poster, came on the first day of the Concert Industry Consortium, an annual gathering of tour promoters and producers.
Experts said Ozzfest, one of the marquee summer rock events of the past decade, would be the first U.S. festival music tour to offer free admission.
"It's something that's never been done before," Gary Bongiovanni, editor of the concert trade publication Pollstar, said of the announcement. "It's a phenomenal idea."
Asked to explain the economics of the tour, which last year grossed more than $19 million with ticket prices averaging about $45 to $50, Ozzfest's founder and namesake joked, "It's free to come in, but you're gonna have to pay to get out."
Ozzfest 2007, preceded by Osbourne's own European tour this spring, will be produced as it has been in the past by leading concert management company Live Nation, with overhead costs being borne by tour sponsors, organizers said.
Tickets will be made available to fans free of charge, mostly through online outlets, and all of the acts, including Osbourne's band, will play for free. But bands taking part will be permitted to sell their own merchandise and CDs.
"It's business as usual, except it's free. We want to encourage new music and new talent," Sharon Osbourne said, adding that Ozzfest would stick to its formula of all-day, outdoor performances by hard-rock bands on multiple stages.
"We're not about to have 20 chanting monks. We're not going to save the forest," she said. "We just rape and pillage and go home."
Asked whether this year's Ozzfest might be the last for Osbourne, who was rumored to be considering retirement, she and her husband -- sporting dark glasses and a cross around his neck -- both snapped in unison, "No way!"
"He's been touring 30, 35 years, and he's done very well, and it's time to give something back," she said. Escalating costs would otherwise have forced the tour to raise ticket prices again this year, she explained in press materials.
Osbourne, the longtime frontman for heavy metal group Black Sabbath, said he was nearly finished recording a new solo album due out the last week of June.
Sharon Osbourne, who co-starred with her husband and their children on the popular MTV reality show "The Osbournes," said they planned to unveil the talent line-up for the summer fest in about two weeks, along with a list of confirmed tour dates.

Hhhmmm...just wondering what you get for free??? Personally. I don't mind PAYING for something that is worthwhile. Anyone ever been to a free concert before? It usually involves a Jesus message. Or cowboy boots. (With the exception of Woodstock of course...but that was simply Karma, man.) Chupacabra Hunter...I'm with you. What do I gotta buy? Will I have to sell my soul to Playstation or Red Bull?

this is incredible, I thought it was incredible that I got special promotion things Family Values and Gigantour for pit tickets for 10$ (not the 10$ lawn seats but actually pit tickets), but this holy sh** you really can't beat this, this will shut so many people up about Sharon.
I had to research a local concert venue for a project and its a huge outdoor venue(its had ozzfest before) and it was only $1500 for bands to rent the entire place for an entire day and it covered all fees for them, so if they sell merchandise they can still make a sh** load.
I'm definately going, closest show is far but still cheaper than what tickets would have cost, I'll sure as hell be there

I planned to go to Ozzfest 2007 whether or not tickets were expensive. This is my last summer before college, and planned on a lot of trips and events anyway. This makes me happy in one way, but sad to see that they have to go to such great lengths to make fans happy. I am now uncertain as to what bands will participate in such a festival as this one is. I may consider Family Values 2007 as well. Tool was cool at Pittsburgh in Sept. of 2006, and hopefully we can have a different experience in Pittsburgh [for me at least] with a new kind of Ozzfest this year.

Hey Alex... most of the artists don't make a lot of money. Some don't even make enough to only do the band thing. They have to make all the money back for the record company and then they get paid. Until then they don't make a dime off the record. I know this doesn't matter for a lot of artists/bands because they can sell like f***ing crazy but for most bands, especially in this genre, they don't make much. Mostly mainstream or the top bands in the genre are the only ones making a lot of money. If they do get out of the red then they hopefully will make enough to live off of, as long as people keep buying the record. I may have messed this up because I'm doing too many things at one time but it's something like that, if it came off clear.

I'm also a little worried about what kind of bands will be playing in this year's ozzfest....while I think it's great that it's free and everyone can have a chance to go, (since when I went last year there were people with signs on the road saying "NEED OZZFEST TICKETS!") I also think its more about quality than quantity. Although if Black Label is there, for free would definitely be worth it. I'm also worried that there will be a hell of a lot of people and you won't even be able to move or get good seats or wherever you may want to be. I may also consider the Family Values tour...or hopefully, and this is just my opinion, Metallica will decide to tour to promote their new CD and I can go see them. I guess we'll just have to see what happens....there is still alot that sharon and ozzy didn't make very clear.

THIS SUCKS! I know people are going to jump on me for saying this but look at it this way. Let’s say, hypothetically, you have to subscribe to Columbia House for a year for them to give you a ticket for free. Not only do you have to deal with crappy Columbia House but now they have your email address and all your personal info so they can sell it and make a killing off you. In all honesty, I would just rather pay the $60 and be done with it. No strings attached. Do you really believe they have OUR best interests in mind? Doubt it, they will make their money and we will get screwed, wait and see. SOTU is starting to sound better and better everyday.

my uncle has a recording studio so my band doesnt have to pay to make or sell our cds. if you know someone who can hook you up with a recording studio just get somone to mix your songs for you and then you'll be making a much bigger profit. of course there is always the problem of advertisement so that people will know about your cd, but thats why you start playing live shows.
56. writes:
Well if it turns out like Your Mom said, then I agree with him. I would rather pay 60 bucks than being stuck with that stupid Columbia sh**. Or wathever else you would have to do to get tickets...then that doesn't make the tickets free. Your Mom has a good point on this. but if it is truly free, then f*** yeah !!! Finally we get something for free. And no Your mom I don't ahte you for saying this, it is well explained...
59. writes:
Yeah, somethings are free...for example posting on this website is free...helping somebody out of the goodness of your heart is free...playing with your ding dong is free, saying that Dimebag is missed is free...and for the grand finale...loving metal is f***ing freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!

63. writes:
This sounds good for fans but bad for bands and metal in general. Iron Maiden or Metallica won't spend their whole summer touring for nothing when they could and rightly should tour themselves. On the other end as zMETALlica said the little known decent acts won't be able to afford a tour and will be left behind.
So what are you left with? Middle of the road, more commercial metalcore acts who have the cash. That's my prediction but hey, I'm not American so what would I know.

who the fukk cares about the fukkin lineup, if Ozzy and BLS is there, for free, then the rest of the lineup doesn't realy matter. although I can see new talent and see if the up incoming bands are good or not. and if it there is still a catch like buying a six pack of energy drinks or somthing, its still ozzy, come on. Some people would still be complaining that theres a catch and worried about the lineup even if Sheron gives you money for just showin up.

79. writes:
Not only am I shocked, but also disappointed. In the past, I went to one and only one free concert. I was very disappointed because anyone who heard about the "free" concert showed up with their grandma which didn't make it fun. How will they deal out the floor tickets? Who get's lawn? I understand that the they are trying to encourage people to come because of the "high" prices but instead why don't they just cut the prices rather than making it free? I rather pay $75 for floor instead of $150. Now, I'm not even sure if it's worth going to depending if the line up is something worth going to see, most likely not.

i think the bands that play will be pretty cool to see, their probably going to be all about the music becuz sharon did say it got expensive cuz the bands wnted more and more money, i think some notables might make an appearence...sure no korn or tool on this tour, but who knows, maybe some bands as well known (and good) as dillenger escape plan, mercury switch, and scars of tomarrow might jump onboard

86. writes:
i never thought ozzfest was that expensive...30 bucks for lawn seats? fine by me...no matter what u pay u can get front row for second stage, and only the douchebag teenagers who think three days grace is metal and drunk ozzy 40-year-old fans pay the 65 bucks for pavillion, so who cares

What's up with the screw Canada thing by the way. If I recall things right, we didn't go on insulting the States...and I will not do that. So screw the guys who said screw Canada. Good things the great majority of Americans are super cool and good neighboors.
