Metalunderground.com's Best of 2006 Awards

Band Photo: Lamb of God (?)
Having wrapped up a truly landmark year in metal, we are going to reflect on what made it such a good year by announcing the Metalunderground.com staff picks from 2006. As in previous years, I’ve polled the entire staff here at metalunderground.com about their favorite albums of last year. This year we've also added a new category for “Best DVD of 2006”
Here are the Metalunderground.com staff picks for the following categories: Best Metal Album of 2006, Best Metal DVD of 2006, Best Metal Newcomer of 2006, Best Live Act of 2006, and Most Anticipated Release for 2007.
Best Metal Album of 2006
There were some great metal albums released in 2006 from every genre. But 2006 marked an exceptionally strong year for the New Wave of American Heavy Metal with releases from nearly all of the movement’s leaders - Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall. After taking “Best Metal Album of 2004,” this band are back at the top with two #1 picks from our staff and a total of four nominations for their latest album:
Lamb of God’s “Sacrament”
Runners up included Isis for “In the Absence of Truth,” which got two #1 picks from our staff members, and Amon Amarth for “With Oden On Our Side,” which got three nods as well. Slayer, Unearth, Strapping Young Lad, Black Label Society, Mastodon, and Cannibal Corpse also had strong showings and multiple nominations. That’s not to say they were the only strong albums, of course.
Best Metal DVD of 2006
In its first year, the category of Best Metal DVD was harder to vote on – not everyone on staff had votes for their favorite DVDs because we don’t all have the time or desire to watch them nearly as much as listening to music, which can be done while doing other things or even working. Still, we had enough votes to make it a contest and one clear winner emerged:
Pantera’s “3 Vulgar Videos From Hell”
A close second was scored by Therion’s "Celebrators of Becoming.” Multiple nominations were also made for the heavy metal documentary “Metal: A Headbanger's Journey,” which also tied with Kamelot’s "One Cold Winter's Night." Lamb of God’s “Making of Sacrament” bonus DVD and Arch Enemy’s “Live Apocalypse" were also popular choices.
Best Metal Newcomer of 2006
Bands eligible for "Best Metal Newcomer of 2006" included bands who have released their first full length album or released their first album on a somewhat major metal label, or even have no formal release at all. This is a tough category to get consensus on, since we all have different tastes in metal and will hear of only relatively few new bands each year. The band that rose to the top, however was:
Burn In Silence
Newcomers Threat Signal also got a couple nominations. Many more bands were mentioned, and therefore worth checking out, so I’ll list them all at the end of this article.
Best Live Act of 2006
Best Live Act is typically a fairly competitive category since it is not restricted to releases from this year, only performances. Touring behind a strong new album can certainly help, as seems to be the case for this year’s winner:
Amon Amarth
Amon Amarth managed to beat out the likes of runners up Slayer, Gwar, Fear Factory and In Flames who also had multiple nominations each for this category.
Most Anticipated Release of 2007
Like the Best Newcomer category, the Most Anticipated release category generates a wide variety of responses due to differing tastes and not actually knowing all of the releases coming out next year. Still, there was quite a bit of consensus on a few forerunners in this category and the winner turned out to be:
Dimmu Borgir’s “In Sorte Diaboli”
I’m quite surprised to see a black metal band take an award like this honestly, but Dimmu Borgir seem to have broadened their appeal and fan base over the years without watering down their music much. And although I did not cast a vote for them myself, I look forward to their new release as well.
Dimmu Borgir barely edged out Machine Head’s “The Blackening” for Most Anticipated Release of 2007. Chimaira’s “Resurrection” was quite popular in this category as well with Guns N Roses' "Chinese Democracy" and Opeth’s next release garnering a decent number of votes too.
In Conclusion...
Looking back, 2006 was a great year for landmark releases in metal. Metalcore has been gravitating away from “trendcore” and “mallcore” for the past couple of years and the style has been permeating the sound of legitamately heavy bands across many metal genres, especially newer bands.
It may be hard to duplicate such a landmark year in metal in 2007, but the release schedule for early 2007 looks fairly strong and the touring schedule even stronger!
Finally, here is the entire list of nominations for the “Best Newcomer” category in 2006, provided simply because these nominations should make good leads for you, our readers, to discover some new bands:
Burn In Silence
7th Son
Crown The Lost
I
Mutiny
Ninetail
Dead Mens Dreams
Deliver Us From Evil
Suspyre
Triosphere
Threat Signal
Gojira
Gutworm
Moment Of Violence (formerly Lofat)
Sahg
Sanitarius
Dark Empire
Heavenly Trip To Hell
Hostility
Norman Bates
Centralia
Fall To Grace
Iliad
Job For A Cowboy
One Man Army and the Undead quartet
Throne of Katarasis
No doubt there are others worth checking out, but these were our staff picks and were limited to 5 bands per person.
Here's to a very metal 2007! \m/

i dont understand the LOG pick for album of the year. there were so many amazing releases this year, ie mastodon, isis, converge, suffocation, nachtmystium, craft, anaal nathrakh, and the list goes on and on. i am dissappointed to see the staff here going w/ the popular pick. in my humble opinion i agree w/ Vayne Theories, that an album should not get chosen for album of the year if it is not the bands best or even third best output to date. well, sacrament is not as good of an album sonically or lyrically as "as the palaces burn", or "new american gospel". again, that is just my opinion. I also very much agree w/ amon amarth as the best live act. they are amazing on stage, although i might throw behemoth out there as a challenge to the mighty norsemen.

You could always try searching for the bands here first. A search on I brings up their band page and a few articles back we posted a link to their MySpace page, which will let you hear their stuff...
As for Lamb of God's Sacrament pick - It took me a while to warm up to it. I'm not sure it's their best album, but it's managed to stay in my car since its releases and I listen to it a lot. It's different enough to stay interesting, intense enough to make me want to listen to it and it still has elements that make it sound like Lamb of God. But my pick didn't count any more than the others who voted for it...That's just how these things go. Not everyone will agree obviously, but I think among the 5 categories there is definitely diversity in the winners and I'm pretty happy with the overall results.
To address other comments, "Ghost Reveries" was a 2005 release and unfortunately the reviewer of Mendeed on here was in the minority who didn't turn in any votes. Otherwise, they might have gotten a mention.

I think theres around 7, maybe as much as 8 people on here who get to vote. While its easy for a fan to pick on our selections, you have to understand that on here, much like in other things, there has to be difference in opinoins and particular favorite styles of music. A baseball team with 9 power hitters arent going to win as much, because of lack of speed, and contributors, much like here, if we all liked the same genre or two, we wouldnt be as inclined to cover (as much) music outside of what we are most interested in. Especially in the reviews, I am not a fan of black metal in the least, and threrefor when reviews get passed out, I dont get any black metal. Do I miss out on some good bands ? Possibly, but if my heart isnt in the style to begin with, it will be hard to win me over. I guess the point is, with so many bands, and so many genres and sub-genres its impossible to cover them all, much less for everyone of the 7-8 of us to hear every album enough to give an honest subjectable opinoin. I abstained from the DVD voting because I had only seen 3, and therefor didnt feel I was qualified for the vote. As fans the rest of you should do the same, try covering and listening to as many bands as possible, then, without being BIASED to your favorite groups, give reasons and points as to why one is better then another. Then you can vote on such things :)

I think that the lists are are very good, no complaints because it is based on people's opinions, which everyone has. However, I think that All That Remains should have been mentioned on the best album list, they rose above the "metalcore" label and out out a completely metal album. Id be interested to see how many, if any, put them on their list

Aw man... No mention for Come Clarity? It was released in Feb. '06, so it definitely would have qualified to be a contender for Album of the Year. But yeah, I do see that In Flames was at least mentioned for Best Live Act, so it's all good. And as for the DVD release of the year, I was hoping there'd be at least one mention of Dream Theater's Score or Rammstein's Volkerball. But I'm not necessarily b****ing about this. I think the staff here usually has pretty good taste. I'm just making observations.
And I too was somewhat surprised that Dimmu Borgir won the Most Anticipated Album catagory, considering acts like Nine Inch Nails and Guns and Roses are releasing new material next year as well.

oh my god,...did i DARE to violate strapping young lad to you little shavers? aw gee,...i'm awful sorry...but the freaking radio plugged them just this morning....yes commercial.....everytime syl has a release..all of the magazines post ads...radio plugs..online interviews...radio tour info.....record giveaways.....you know....COMMERCIALS!!!

26. writes:
so they play slayer on the radio and slayer becomes commercial? and if you don't post ads for albums how could people know these thing exist or when it's gonna be released?
god, a bit of exposure is not such an evil thing. go back to your kvlt dungeon and draw pentagrams in virgin blood.

27. writes:
slayer is washed up too...why can't you bedroom rockers let go of the past....and get out to some shows...find bands that pull their own..new talent...not over produced trash
that are literally a franchise..a marketing product..........by the way,...they're are no virgins you flaming ball of washed up hero-worship....go back to your basement under your moms bedroom...and learn how to jam at dawn they sleep in the mirror

31. writes:
o so the radio plays syl on the radio so now they r commercial, if a band is played on the radio that means they r becomin popular and if they r playin basically the same thing since day 1 then thats not commercial, i doubt u would say dimmu borgir was commercial if they were played on the radio

38. writes:
dude, obviously you dont agree with anyone or any of the things being posted on this site, so why dont you just leave? just sit in your room and listen to some of your precious noise.... ehr.... "underground metal" and pretend that theres people in this world who care about your opinion. do you make it a habit of posting on sites just to stir up trouble or do you just have nothing better to do with your life?

39. writes:
So exzoomer....you think Slayer should be considered like Metallica now? My question is this....who sold out????? Don't see Slayer prancing about like Lars does!!!! Yes...Slayer is one of my favourite bands. Christ Illusion was a great release, but LOG is certainly worthy of their recognition. Slayer are thoroughly deserving of the respect and stature they have - because they have NOT sold out.
But...you're entitled to your opinion....opinions are like a***holes, everone has one.

45. writes:
Sikth, Mastodon, Amon Amarth, And f***ING SUFFOCATION had some bad arse new material for 2006, Lamb of God's Sacrament was good, but i would go as far as say it was the best album of the year, in my personal opinion Suffocation wins it all. True Underground Death Metal.

51. writes:
Some of these comments made me laugh.....Thanks for that......Anyhoo....To address some of the more "heated" topics....SYL may get played on ONE (I'll stress ONE) commercial radio station....that hardly makes them commercial......Slayer vs. punk?....hmmm......Slayer did a punk cover album....'nuff said!

52. writes:
one station?....one?...how can you be sure of that?...are you listening to every radio station in north america? i don't think so
i celebrate the entire dead kennedy's catalogue....i know what punk is....i just thought reaching for the sex pistols was like saying the best blues band of all time is zz top
try real punk like...tear it up....vision,...or the dwarves...

55. writes:
well.....Cannibal Corpse was advertised on the radio here once because they were traveling through the area....So I guess that makes them commercial too....I don't listen to EVERY station in America...but having been in every state on the eastern seaboard and most in the midwest, I've heard more stations than the average person....(There are a large number of crap stations around)...I've also been broadcasting for a number of years for a fairly popular metal station and haven't seen all that many requests for SYL.....LoG and Slayer, however, get completely played to death.....Most n00bs to punk will reach for the Sex Pistols because the media has told everyone that they were the first and have glamorized the hell out of them.....Many disregard NY punk from the late 70's completely.
My question, regarding the "Best of 2006" category.....Why did Pantera win for best video when 3 Vulgar Hits came out years ago?

56. writes:
Keoll, pantera won best dvd of the year because they re-released it, the dvd now has chapters, and it just straight up kicks fuucking asss!!
Sacrament deserve to won metal album of the year because LOG are the best metal band out there right now, BLS shot to hell also should have been a close winner, same will cannibal corpses KILL!!

59. writes:
hey there mr,...you don't have it all figured out yet....the real stanton moore was chilling at my place with some beers...he saw some of the morbid convo,....he left his opinion on my pc.....check out the dude,...great drummer ...he honestly couldn't care less though........http://www.myspace.com/stantonmoore

hahahah - how did Lamb Of God get Best Album and yet nobody seems to have voted for it? Sneaky bastards.
Can't remember who exactly I voted for, but in no particular order, it went something like
Tool - 10,000 Days
SYL - The New Black
BLS - Shot To Hell
Isis - In The Absence Of Truth
and something else... ummm... I've forgotten. Maybe Slayer? I had about ten albums I wanted to vote for, hahah.
Meanwhile, I forgot about Deliver Us From Evil and Job For A Cowboy. Those are good bands. Havn't heard of the winning Newcomer, but it looks like they need checking out.

68. writes:
look, i'm not exactly saying i'm the most experience, but i definitely know that strapping young lad is not commercial, at least not from where i'm from. and i also know that strapping young lad is a good band, and that it is really dumb to say that a band is crap just cos their commercial in your area.

77. writes:
Moonspell, yeah, forgot they released one, hey. Bummer. Excellent band.
Yeah, Australia sucks if you're a metal fan. We get a good tour once every four years... actually 2007 is shaping up to be an incredible year. But even the ozzies who DO listen to metal here are all into mall- and hard-core crap. We get goths that sport MCR shirts, for crying out loud - what I wouldn't give for some proper goths around here, hahah.

85. writes:
hahahahah, my only problem with going to concerts is the money issues. I have none. money, that is, not money issues. I have many money issues, hahah.
Do what you can, guys, some of the acts coming this year wont be back for a good half a decade, I can practically garauntee you that.
That's too bad, where are you from Cynic? Maybe you should look at skipping country, hahah.

88. writes:
14? Man that is young... fake ids won't work for a while yet... a good way is to get in with local bands, make friends so they sneak you into their gigs. Next thing you know they're opening for a touring band and bam, your in.
Oh, I didn't even mention where I'm from lol. I'm from New Zealand aka an Australian island if your a touring metal band. I'll move one day, hopefully the legends will still be around to see then!
exzoomer... haha, that must rip you up.
91. writes:
i dono what that guy was flapping his gums about but this is a metal site not a simple little punk discussion board.
anyway i dont think lamb of god's sacrament was good. if you ask me minus the singer and they would be all death metal supit hardcore influences. desecrators of our Music...

94. writes:
RememberMetal?, you're not that much of an oddball. Most of my top albums weren't even mentioned (including the comments here) -- Kalmah, One Man Army and the Undead Quartet, Amorphis, Scar Symmetry, Norther... =P I rather enjoy the new Borknagar album too, even though it's more folksy than metal.
I'm anticipating the new Dark Tranquillity.

98. writes:
Well, I didn't get a vote in any of this, but my faves were too obscure to matter, anyhow. Looking back, Norther's "Till Death Unites Us" was my clear favorite, and it's the number one album EVER for my own pure headbanging enjoyment. A distant second would have been Disarmonia Mundi.
I have to agree with the posters who said Ashes of the Wake was the best LoG offering to date...that's a 5 Skull album if there ever was one. No qualms with a band like that getting the nod for this year's award.
Katatonia, Demiricous, and Enslaved get props, too.
Most anticipated: anything by Dark Tranquility or Nevermore.
