Dir en Grey Interview With Scuzz TV, London Report

Japanese natives,Dir en Grey, were interviewed by Scuzz TV backstage at their Islington Academy gig in London, England on August 2, 2007. Watch the interview in two parts here and here.

Tickets for Dir en Grey's first-ever U.K. show at London's Islington Academy sold out within just two days of going on sale back in April, despite no official advertising. Details of how to order the first 80 tickets were disclosed in mid-April via a "J-Rock" community, and sold out within six minutes. The remaining 720 tickets, priced at £28 each, went on sale at midday on Monday, April 16, and had all been purchased by Wednesday, before any advertising had time to hit the streets.

The phenomenal demand for Dir en Grey in the U.K. can be attributed to the same word of web buzz that launched the careers of artists like LILY ALLEN and THE ARCTIC MONKEYS. Having had no publicity, official releases or shows so far in the U.K., the band has captured the imaginations of British music fans through web sites like YouTube and MySpace, where they're racking up an incredible number of plays.

The Japanese band has already experienced incredible success in Asia and continental Europe, as well as in the USA, where, according to reports, shows are filled with hysterical, screaming fans, some of whom have been known to pass out in scenes reminiscent of THE BEATLES' shows.

Dir en Grey's new album, "The Marrow of a Bone", received a U.K. release on May 7 via Gan-Shin Records.

Deep Purple Offer VIP Concert Packages

DEEP PURPLE's broad base of fans worldwide can now access a totally new official web site for the legendary hard rock band to get the latest news, detailed information on the band, the best VIP concert ticket packages and exclusive new merchandise at www.deeppurple.org. The dynamic new site that launched today was crafted by their newly appointed webmaster Paid Inc. celebrity services.

"The band wanted a site where their fans could find everything they're looking for all at once," said DEEP PURPLE manager Bruce Payne. "The new web site gives them the opportunity to interact directly with their fans, as well as offer official collectible merchandise and VIP ticketing that fans know is authentic and the best quality."

The new web site currently includes a fan forum, audio interviews with band members, historical information, discography and news.

Within the next 60 days, the site will offer VIP ticket packages for the band's upcoming European tour, which kicks off in Italy in November and hits France and Belgium. Keith Garde, President of Paid celebrity services, said the site will be a central place for fans to stay connected and gain access to high-end concert experiences that includes some of the best seats in the house, opportunities to meet the band members, backstage tours and more. Merchandise is still being developed, and fans can expect to find a broad and ever-changing array of items filling the online store in the coming weeks.

"Our first goal since signing with DEEP PURPLE a couple weeks ago was to immediately establish an official online presence," Garde said. "Now we will expand it by adding the fun bells and whistles such as the online store, streaming video, contests and other opportunities for the fans and band to interact with one another. The site will be continually changing to keep fans engaged and entertained."

Since their start in the U.K. in 1968, DEEP PURPLE has reinvented itself multiple times, first establishing the sound that would eventually be known as "hard rock." Fans worldwide immediately recognize the pulsating chords of DEEP PURPLE's "Smoke on the Water", "Child in Time" and "Highway Star" (ranked as the 8th greatest rock guitar solo of all time). The band's numerous best-selling albums, including their seminal "Deep Purple in Rock" (1970) and "Machine Head" (1972), and their more recent successes such as "Rapture of the Deep" (Townsend 2005), have placed them firmly in the ranks of the top-70 best-selling artists of all time across all genres, with more than 100 million records sold.

Slayer Frontman Talks About Family Life

Cullen Hendrix of San Diego CityBEAT recently conducted an interview with SLAYER frontman Tom Araya. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

On his kids:

"My son sits behind Dave [Lombardo] and mimics his drum playing. He gets all into it. [My kids] are 8 and 11. They think it's crazy how some of the fans are — the pits and everything. But it's good. They get to see what I do when I'm away."

On his ranch in Texas, where Araya spends his days away from the band:

"I've got nine head of cattle — Black Angus. They're not much, but they're growing. They're like big dogs. I walk out and there's this huge, 2,000-pound bull that'll come up to me and nudge me, asking me to pet him.

"I get a lot of pleasure in knowing that they can trust me with their lives. [Listening to] the subject matter that I write about, you wouldn't [expect] that. But what I get out of them is the trust they have in me. I hold their lives in my hand."

"Where I live, there are a lot of people that live with very little means, and they're happy. It just blows my mind how people are in the country. They don't look at you before they help you — they just help you. In the city out here, they'll look at you before they'll decide to help you or not."

On being blamed by parent and music-watchdog groups for teenage tragedies: (In 1996, the murder of Elyse Pahler resulted in two lawsuits against SLAYER that were ultimately thrown out of court.)

"Everybody's pointing fingers, and no one wants to take responsibility. It's hard to look in the mirror as a parent and realize that you could have been so blind, so unaware."

On TAKING BACK SUNDAY:

"I like that band. We went and saw their show in Dallas and got to hang out and meet the band. They were all excited to meet our kids. That's it for the modern day bands — there just doesn't seem like there's much happening."

Def Leppard Singer Says Newer Bands Get A Raw Deal

The Pulse of Radio (formerly Launch Radio Networks) reports: DEF LEPPARD is currently touring with two other veteran classic rock acts, STYX and FOREIGNER, all of whom are able to play a show filled with hits, and make money without having a new record out. DEF LEPPARD's lead singer Joe Elliott says, however, that new bands starting out today wouldn't be allowed to make money touring and growing their audience over the course of four or five albums, because record companies are so demanding and give new bands a raw deal. "Contracts nowadays, record labels, what's left of 'em, are trying to actually get parts of a band's merchandise when they tour," he said. "It's like, how dare you! It's two separate things! You know, I just can't see Roger Waters willingly giving up 20 percent of his T-shirts. Luckily we aren't in that kind of bag. I just feel bad for the new bands. I mean, there's the odd artist that can sell records these days. But most people, if they don't have a second record make profit, they don't make a third record."

While the band has mostly finished working on a new album, they aren't playing any of their new songs on tour, so it's a greatest-hits evening.

Their upcoming record will be called "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge", but no release date has been set for it. It will be their first album since last year's "Yeah!", which was a collection of covers of songs by artists who had influenced the band. Their most recent studio album of original material was 2002's "X".

Taproot "Nearly Finished" New Album

Bassist Phil Lipscomb of the Ann Arbor, Michigan hard rock band TAPROOT has issued the following update:

"I've been getting a lot of messages from people asking me for album updates, so now I'm FINALLY getting around to telling you guys what's going on. WE ARE FINISHED!!!...almost. As far as recording goes, I'm going to be re-recording my bass on the verses of one of our songs to give it a different feel (something a little more straight-forward than I did before) and one little vocal part on another song is going to be redone, and then WE'LL BE FINISHED!!!...almost. Then comes mixing and mastering, getting the albums printed, promo for the album, getting it distributed in stores, iTunes, etc., etc. Still some time to go, but the end is in sight. I'm sure everyone wants a release date so they can mark their calendars and have something to look forward to, but for now we really don't know. I don't even want to give an estimate because sometimes things just take longer than expected. Thank you all for your patience, and I hope you feel it's worth the wait. I'm also going to be bringing TaprooTube [TAPROOT video channel] back soon, I have lots of footage I've been playing with, but I'm working with a new video program (Final Cut) which although has a ton more features than Windows Movie Maker, it's also a lot more complicated and takes me a bit longer to get things done. Soon, though, soon..."

TAPROOT's follow-up to 2005's "Blue-Sky Research" is reportedly being produced by Tim Patalan. It's unknown yet if it will be released independently or through a major label.

The new album will be the band's first since parting with Atlantic Records in June 2006. They're also reportedly working on a DVD, but there's no word as to when that will see the light of day.

TAPROOT, which formed in 1997, is perhaps best known for its 2002 album, "Welcome". It included the hit singles "Poem" and "Welcome".

Cannibal Corpse Bassist Issues Tour Update

CANNIBAL CORPSE bassist Alex Webster has issued the following update:

"[I] ust wanted to update you all on how the tour is going. We have had another major dissapointment, and that is that the concert in Venezuela was cancelled by the local authorities mere hours before we were to begin. This is an enormous disappointment for us, as all of the fans were already there, and many of them had traveled a great distance to get there. We are so frustrated, because there is no question this would have been an incredble concert. The venue was great, the equipment was great, all of the organization done by the local promoter seemed really well done. The audience outside of the concert seemed really excited about the show, and so were we. Unfortunately, the local government decided to shut the show down, and despite the best efforts of all envolved the show was cancelled. We are so sorry to all of the fans who came to see us play, you are no doubt the only people who are more dissapointed and frustrated than we are.

"In other tour news, we have learned a little more about the situation in Colombia. Apparently, a short announcement was made by a member of the local promoter's crew shortly after I made my announcement. I and the other guys did not hear this announcement as we were busy with our gear or greeting the fans, but while Paul was working on his drums he said he saw a man hiding behind the amplifiers talking into a microphone. From what we understand this man blamed the show stoppage on my illness, which as we have stated before is completely untrue. This dishonest announcement helps explain a great deal about why the audience was so angry. The guy who made the announcement was no doubt part of the same group of people that had just told us to stop playing because the police were shutting the show down. We are completely disgusted that this kind of misleading bullshit took place. We also have heard that the local promoter is saying similiar misleading statements on his website. We have never been put in a worse position by a promoter in the history of our band and we are furious about it. We also want to repeat that we are very sorry to our fans in Colombia for this early stoppage of the concert, we are so unhappy about all of this.

"OK, now that new have the bad news out of the way, I'd like to say a big thank you to all of the fans who came to the shows in El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Those shows went very well, and the audience response was just incredible. These shows have really helped lift our spirits during a tour that has had more than its fair share of problems.

"Also, just to let my friends know, I'm feeling fine now, and thank you so much for the support."

Inhale Exhale Drops Off Tour

Inhale Exhale has dropped off their current tour, which had originally been with Nodes Of Ranvier. Here's the official word from the band:

"We will be heading home today and not hitting the last week or so of dates. Due to a mix up of booking and such (too much to explain), Nodes of Ranvier decided to head home last week and prepare for a Sept. tour they have coming up which started a chain reaction of other bands heading home. My Bitter End also had to drop off. Not sure what happened ultimately but with a couple bands bailing, and therefore several shows/dates falling through from that, Inhale Exhale was only able to play until the 20th (a big thank you to everyone that came to see us in Virginia Beach). We are really bummed at what's happened and are already trying to work out a way to make it back out in the coming months to make it up."

The Berzerker Seek New Touring Guitarist

THE BERZERKER's Luke Kenny has issued the following update:

"Unfortunately, the guitarist I was working with in Brisbane didn't work out. So there is now a position available for a long term/full time touring guitarist. But please, before you even contact me about this, the reason I am looking for new people is very simple:

-- My normal guys cant get enough time off work, with out losing their jobs to tour.

-- They don’t want to be away from loved ones for extended periods of time.

-- They can earn more money working their day jobs.

And that’s it really. They could play the material with no problems and we all get along very well. It just touring is hard on relationships and finances. If after reading that, you are a guitarist that wants to show the world how good you really are, The Berzerker is the perfect vehicle for you.

No drugo’s, drunks, egotistical attitudes (Fuck…if NAPALM DEATH don’t have egos and they started this whole thing 20 years ago neither should you...). Must be easy going, punctual, dedicated to both your craft and the band, ready to drop everything and work hard to refine your skills. Please feel free to contact me at lukeberzerker@gmail.com and remember I live in Melbourne, Australia.

You made even have a chance to work on writing and recording new BERZERKER material."
