Judas Priest Bassist Announces Retirement

Ian Hill, the bassist of heavy metal icons Judas Priest and longest serving founding member, has announced his retirement from the band due to medical issues. A statement from the musician reads as follows:

"Hello everyone, for a long time now, when asked "how long can you continue" - I've always answered 'until my performances suffer'.... I hate to say it, but that time has come.

"For some years now, I've been struggling with the onset of the evil arthritis, which is now in an advanced state in my left shoulder and right hand, established in my right shoulder, and present in both knees. I've been fighting this with painkilling pills, gels, and recently with cortisone injections in my shoulder and hand.

"Although, I was able to put bass lines to the songs for the new album, there were questions whether I'd be able to complete the recent European tour without incident, so we asked our good friend Davey Rimmer from Uriah Heep, and of course Elegant Weapons, to learn the set list to stand in for me if I had to pull out, which I did for the London show. This was due to me snapping a tendon in my left shoulder (as if I didn't have enough problems with it!) just before the encores during the Brussels show two days before. This led to me not being able to lift my arm enough to reach the neck of my bass. So we had to call Davey to stand in for me, who put in an incredible performance at such short notice!

"I've seen specialists, who suggest I might get away without surgery, but even if I don't there's no guarantee either way that I'll have enough strength in my shoulder/arm to complete a whole stage show.

"In view of all this, and the fact that I've neglected my family life for fifty seven years, I've decided to retire and spend the remaining years making up for it, and doing things with them before it involves one of ‘em pushing me around in a wheelchair.

"The obvious choice for my replacement is Davey. He's a great bassist, and a genuinely nice bloke who'll fit the job perfectly, and I wish him the very best of luck!

"There's not a day goes by where I don't give thanks for the incredible journey I've lived through, and it just remains for me to say that I love you all, and thank you for the life you've let me live X"

The Violent Hour (Ex-Butcher Babies) Debut Videe

The Violent Hour have premiered the music video for “Already Dead“. The project, fronted by former Butcher Babies vocalist Carla Harvey alongside her husband, Charlie Benante (Anthrax, Pantera), teamed up with director Vicente Cordero (Cradle Of Filth, Fear Factory) for the new visual.

Harvey developed the video’s treatment, describing the song as ‘a resurrection story about hitting a point where there’s nowhere left to fall and realizing that means the only way to go is up. If you’re already dead, why not get back up, grab your guitar and throw a party? You can’t kill what’s already dead.’

The concept was familiar territory for Harvey, whose past ventures have included work in mortuary science, funeral direction and other fields related to end-of-life care.

Eleine Drops "Ich Sehe Dich" Music Video

Today, Swedish metal powerhouse Eleine drops their new single and music video "Ich Sehe Dich," taken from their highly anticipated fifth studio album, "The Water Taste Of Blood," arriving December 4 via Algoth Records.

Where previous singles painted the picture of falling empires of lies, betrayal, and the damage left in their wake, "Ich Sehe Dich" brings the reckoning face-to-face as the most direct statement from the upcoming album. The song thrives on the striking contrast of beautifully melodic verses that steadily build tension until heavy, static, chuggy riffs shatter the calm and a three-word German chorus lands like a verdict: Ich Sehe Dich. I see you. Standing shoulder to shoulder with the Eleine Legion‘s favorite "Mein Herz Brennt," the track is stern, heavy, and unapologetic. It unmasks manipulation and toxic shame, written for the exact moment you stop letting someone‘s lies shape you and the people around you. Unflinching and brutal, it cuts straight through deceit, unveiling an intense, powerful new dimension in Eleine's signature sound.

In Eleine's own words:
"Have you ever wanted to say “I see you” straight to the face of someone who tries to hurt you, or others, through spreading lies?

"“Ich Sehe Dich” is about that exact moment.

"Yet again, another chorus of ours felt so natural to have in another language. The words fell perfectly into place and emphasizes the heaviness of the message within the song." More...

Konvent Shares Title Track Of New Album "Firesky"

Today, Danish death doom band Konvent shares the second single and title track from their upcoming third album, "Firesky," out November 6, 2026 via Napalm Records. The new song shows the four women’s versatility by highlighting both their ability to open up pitch-black abysses as well as weave in clean passages that shine through the cloudy heaviness like the fire in its name. Following a tour with shooting stars Zeal & Ardor as well as shows at Wacken and Copenhell, "Firesky" is Konvent's bravest album yet.

Embellishing their compositions, five songs is all it takes this time around to prove how incomparably weighty Konvent's sonic soundscapes can be. "Firesky’s" tracks are significantly longer than what Konvent have offered before, but the dynamics within the dark arrangements prove the extraordinary commitment to their craft. Previously leaving their mark on the death doom scene, the band now expands on their influences and experiments significantly with black metal. They say the third album makes it or breaks it – Konvent, however, manage to fully reconstruct the principle itself.

Konvent about the new single “Firesky”:
"‘Firesky’ is a celebration of female and queer communities lifting each other up in a world of adversity and burning down every deep-rooted threat to our existence. Joining us on ‘Firesky’ is Mai Soon Young Øvlisen of Meejah." More...

Metal Luminaries Celebrate the Legacy of Cronos

CronosConrad Lant, best known by his pseudonym “Cronos,” died one week ago today. He was 63 years old. He was and will forever remain a metal god. The iconic frontman helmed the pioneering extreme metal unit Venom who was born from humble beginnings in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. They provided the foundation for so much musical extremity that continues to blossom to this day.

My own entry point to Venom was Power 30/Power Hour, the Canadian equivalent of Headbanger’s Ball. And my better half was introduced to the musical dark side when she was seven years old via her brother who invited her into their home’s attic where he showed off the black carpet upon which he painted a pentagram in white that was illuminated by candlelight, a perfect backdrop for the sounds of Venom’s “Welcome To Hell.” Many of us have similar profound and pivotal stories, including the following extreme metal luminaries, underground musicians and industry folks. Metal maniacs who have been a part of Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Emperor, Death, Obituary, Portal, Blasphemy, Beherit, Impaled Nazarene, Immolation, Incantation, Soilent Green, Eyehategod, Angelcorpse, Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Brujeria, Order From Chaos, Ares Kingdom, Internal Bleeding, Pig Destroyer, Demonic Christ, Deiphago, Testament and more contributed to this extensive tribute. The devilish hand of Venom and Cronos has reached across the globe and their influence upon extreme music cannot ever be overstated. Rest In Power, Cronos. More...
