Drowning Pool Reunites With Singer Ryan McCombs

As first reported by Metal Edge, Soil vocalist Ryan McCombs has rejoined Drowning Pool, with whom he appeared on two studio albums, "Full Circle" and "Drowning Pool," as well as a live album, "Loudest Common Denominator," before leaving in 2011. Fortunately for Soil fans, McCombs will continue to front them too. The quartet will play their reunion show tonight at Club L.A. in Destin, Florida, before headlining the Throwdown At The Campground festival tomorrow.

Said McCombs, "When I stepped away from music back in 2004, I only got back into the mix because it was with [Drowning Pool members] C.J., Stephen and Mike, and because it was also a way for me to be a small part of keeping their music with Dave [late Drowning Pool vocalist Dave Williams] alive. Just being back in the same room together after so many years, gearing up for these shows, was a quick reminder as to why I considered them to be my best friends in the business back in the day. As everyone living life can attest to, sometimes our days can get messy - but in the words of one Dave Williams, ‘Everything happens for reasons, I just don’t know…’ Some of the greatest moments in my career came about as a member of DP and I’m really thankful for the opportunity to perform with them once again."

Added drummer Mike Luce, "I’m very happy that Soil and Drowning Pool are in a spot now where we not only co-exist, but are close enough as friends to move forward together. We support and respect each other enough for us to make sure they can keep doing what they do, and for them to allow us to revisit a bunch of these cool tunes we played a decade-plus ago, with the singer who we viewed as the archetype after Dave passed. We can’t wait to get onstage together again and see where this leads."

"It’s exciting as hell having Ryan McCombs rocking out with us again," said guitarist C.J. Pierce. "It’s been 13 years since the last time we were in a rehearsal room together, and from the second we hit that first note it was like we never skipped a beat. I’ve never felt such a connection as musicians, true friends and family as I do with Mike, Stevie and Ryan. I can’t wait to share the stage together again."

"Never say never," said bassist Stevie Benton. "It’s hard to believe it’s been over 10 years since we shared a stage with Ryan. I think, deep down, we always knew this reunion would happen."

Additionally, McCombs’ band mates in Soil stated: "Ryan has extensive history with both Soil and Drowning Pool, so when the opportunity arose for him to move forward as the singer of both bands, we knew we could make it work together. Both bands aren’t kids anymore, and we’ve all grown as people, mended past hard feelings, and are approaching the 25-year marks. Ryan wants to work. He wants to tour and play as much as possible, and this allows him to do that. As Dave Williams said just days before his passing, ‘Anywhere there is electricity for DP and Soil to play together, let’s do it…’"

Drowning Pool Reveals New Album Title

Multi-platinum artists and Texas heavy rockers, Drowning Pool, will release their forthcoming studio album, "Strike A Nerve," via UMe/T-Boy. This is Drowning Pool’s seventh studio album and third with frontman Jasen Moreno.

Founding members C.J. Pierce, Stevie Benton and Mike Luce have played together for an uninterrupted 25 years, with Moreno joining the band in 2012. The singer’s 2013 debut, "Resilience," was recently RIAA-certified gold, further cementing Drowning Pool’s presence as a pioneer of the nu-metal movement and one of the new millennium’s premier hard rock/heavy metal crossovers.

Fueled by the hit singles "Bodies," "Tear Away" and title track "Sinner," the band’s 2001 debut is currently RIAA-certified platinum and closing in on double-platinum status. With a platinum album and two gold records already on their résumé , Drowning Pool are looking to the future with the new release.

"I’m so grateful for such a big opportunity and proud of everyone’s hard work that afforded us this chance," says lead singer Jasen Moreno. "It’s been such a flood of emotions since we started recording this album and talking to Universal. It almost didn’t seem real when everything was put on pause because of Covid. I’m so eager for people to hear the new record and get out there and perform it live. I’m very excited and I welcome the pressure of the moment, but what I feel most is gratitude and anticipation for what the future holds." More...

Chicago Open Air Day One

I've never been to an open air music festival. Mostly since most music fests have only one or two artists who I like and try to jam as many different styles of music into one festival as possible to the point where they have no target audience anymore. Lollapalooza is perhaps the biggest offender in that regard to he point where it appeals to both everyone and nobody simultaneously. But thankfully Chicago finally got a metal festival of its own to compensate for a lot of the directionless festivals that the city is known for that have kept me at bay for so long.

Milwaukee Metalfest closed up around a decade ago so Chicago getting a heavy metal festival was (literally) music to my ears. The Rust Belt had nothing in the way of metal festivals and the only other big metal fests have been Rocklahoma, Maryland Deathfest, New England Metal and Hardcore Fest and 70,000 Tons of Metal. As somebody who doesn't live within driving distance from Oklahoma, Maryland, Massachusetts or Florida, I was incredibly excited for something to hit the Midwest as it was long overdue.

But the part that got me most excited was the potential for the future. Specifically a future where artists who only do festivals and mini-tours can finally hit a big outdoor stage and do so in my hometown. Think Anaal Nathrakh, Samael, Ihsahn, Pig Destroyer and Zardonic being able to not only play a real festival show in the Midwest but also be introduced to a whole new audience who would be coming for the far more mainstream headliner. At the very least, the fest could use some less obscure second stage openers and some more foreign bands who haven't come to America for years like Primordial, Vreid or Orphaned Land. But for a brand new festival, the lineup wasn't bad by any means, particularly when it came to headliners. It's a possible future outlet for all the cool stuff that I would never otherwise get to see in coming years which is what got me psyched more than anything else.

I waited in the mother of all lines upon arriving on Friday for a full 90 minutes. Everyone wanted to be in early to catch the opening band on the opening day of the inaugural festival. And the person in front of me was the evil doppelganger of a friend of mine from college. Same body. Same haircut. Same facial features. Same teeth. It was just completely uncanny, especially since one of them lives in west Iowa and the other in east Nebraska. More...

Drowning Pool To Perform With 82 Year Old

Drowning Pool recently surged to viral status after 82-year-old Navy veteran and aerospace manager John Hetlinger performed his favorite karaoke track "Bodies" on the NBC competition show America's Got Talent. Video of the performance instantly exploded online, with over 7 million views in the first two weeks... and counting.

Shortly after the outpouring of attention, Drowning Pool guitarist CJ Pierce sat down for a chat with Entertainment Weekly, inviting Hetlinger to perform during an upcoming set at Chicago Open Air. Hetlinger replied on Twitter accepting the invitation, and the rest is history!

Hetlinger will join Drowning Pool onstage at Chicago Open Air during a 2:00pm set on Friday the 15th. John Hetlinger states, "I am really amped-up to see y'all when Drowning Pool and I join you in Chicago this Friday afternoon for the Chicago Open Air festival.
