Heathen Signs With Napalm Records

Bay Area thrash metal veterans Heathen have begun a new era, joining forces with Napalm Records. With a new album in the works as well, the San Francisco icons kick off the new partnership with a special treat for their loyal fans. Digging deep into their musical past, the band recorded two rather obscure tracks from other bands the members were involved with. Up first is "Never A God," title track of Laughing Dead’s first demo. The band was fronted by Heathen vocalist David White in the early 90s—the classic song will now shine once again in Heathen's powerful style.

Heathen about the signing:
"We’re very proud to announce that Heathen has officially signed with Napalm Records! Joining forces with a team who shares our vision, our drive, and our passion for metal music. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for the band. We’re fired up for what’s coming and can’t wait to complete work on the new Heathen album!"

Napalm Records Senior A&R Sebastian Muench about the signing:
"We are incredibly proud and excited to welcome the legendary Californian thrash metal band Heathen to the Napalm Records family. Heathen are true icons of the genre, and working with them is an absolute honor. We strongly believe in this partnership and are thrilled to take the next chapter of HEATHEN’s legacy to new heights together." More...

70,000Tons Of Metal Announces Destination Change

70000TONS OF METAL, The Original, The World’s Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise, has announced a change in the destination for its 2026 voyage. The upcoming edition of the festival at sea, taking place from January 29 to February 2, 2026, will now sail from Miami, Florida to Nassau, the Bahamas aboard Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas.

Originally planned to return to Labadee, Haiti, the decision to reroute the journey was made out of an abundance of caution and with the well-being of all Sailors, artists, and crew as the top priority.

"While Labadee has been a great port of call on past sailings, we are closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti and its surrounding regions," said Andy Piller, Skipper of 70000TONS OF METAL. "Ensuring the safety and comfort of our Survivors is non-negotiable. With that in mind, we’ve made the proactive decision to change course for 2026. Nassau provides a welcoming alternative that allows us to maintain the world-class experience our Sailors expect — both on board and ashore." More...

Heathen Announces New Live Album

For the past 40 years, the Bay Area thrash pioneers Heathen have abided by their never-say-die attitude. The Heathen brand of intelligent yet aggressive thrash appealed not only to the genre’s core demographic but also to metal fans looking for brains behind the brawn. On March 14th, the band will release their newest offering "Bleed The World: Live" via Nuclear Blast Records.

"Bleed The World: Live" features songs from each of the band’s albums, including recent tracks such as "Sun In My Hand" and "The Blight" as well as classics such as "Hypnotized" and "Goblin’s Blade," mirroring the band’s crushing live setlist. Today, Heathen offers fans the first single with a live music video for the track "Sun In My Hand."

Heathen comments: "We're beyond stoked to announce the 'Bleed the World: Live' album! We recorded both the band AND the audience at every show on our 'Bleed the World' tour to capture a true live experience in audio form. The most powerful performances of each song were mixed for the album and the results are incredible. Can't wait to share this with everyone to enjoy while we get ready to head into the studio for another dose of Bay Area thrash!"

Recorded in several cities across the United States during the 2023 "Bleed The World" tour, "Bleed the World: Live" is the perfect audio representation of the Heathen live show. Produced by guitarist Kragen Lum and mixed by Zeuss, "Bleed the World: Live" transports the listener into the concert hall with a crystal-clear yet heavy production and captures the interaction between the band and the audience that makes every Heathen live show special. The cover artwork by Travis Smith depicts a steel Heathen logo piercing the bleeding Earth, held by a hand that encapsulates the world tour as a moment in time. More...

The Final Day Of Brutal Assault 2024? Perfection.

After the 10-band marathon from the previous day, today’s manageable list of 7 bands felt more like a five-kilometer race in terms of running from stage to stage. It was sunny and noticeably warmer than all the previous days. The soggy weather that the festival began with was now a distant memory. There was a different energy in the air today due to the ideal outdoor festival conditions. The final day of Brutal Assault 2024 already had the feeling that it was going to be a memorable one for the Brutal Assault archives.

The first band of the afternoon was technical Death Metal legends, Pestilence. I haven’t seen them since Martin Van Drunen left the band and if you’re doing the math, that’s a really fucking long time ago. I tried listening to “Testimony of the Ancients” post Martin leaving, but the brutality that the previous albums had was non-existent. I didn’t like it and basically wrote them off after that. During today’s set, Pestilence played Dehydrated from my favorite album “Consuming Impulse,” but I just couldn’t get into it. The vocals were weak and forced. Martin Van Drunen was Pestilence. I’ll just stick to Asphyx from here on out.

I was excited to finally see Sadus, another legendary Thrash Metal band from the Bay Area. Brutal Assault was chock full of them this year. Sadus is another band that has been around forever and it took a festival in Europe for me to finally see them. I noticed that one of the guitarists was Claudeous Creamer from the current Possessed line-up. It’s nice to see Bay Area Thrash bands helping each other out by lending members for tours and shows. After my 3-song photo set, I’d be lying if I said they were anything more than “just good” live. The crowd was into it though, and that’s all that probably mattered to Sadus.

Darren Travis of Sadus

In general, I’m a huge fan of Polish Black Metal and that doesn’t translate to just Behemoth. Poland has a treasure trove of Black Metal bands and my next band, Totenmesse, is one of those that deserves your attention. I missed their set due to a scheduling conflicts at Mystic Festival a couple of months prior, but I was able to right that wrong today.

Totenmesse

Piotr Wujkowiecki of Totenmesse

There was already a decent sized crowd waiting at the claustrophobia inducing Octagon Stage for Totenmesse when I arrived. By the time they started, you could no longer maneuver freely through the crowd without spilling beers and getting swaths of other people’s sweat on you. Overall, I really enjoyed their set. Their vocalist, Piotr Wujkowiecki, is the visual focus for the band. He makes these faces that you don’t know if he’s getting ready to stab you in the face or vomit on you. If you don’t believe me, just check out this video from their set here. More...
