For those of you concerned about our upcoming European tour, have no fear. Jon Dette will be filling in on drums for all dates on the tour. Rock the Nation presents - Heathen, Generation Kill and Dust Bolt thrashing Europe! Grab your denim vests and leather jackets, put on those hi-tops and guzzle down a few cold beers: because a true thrash metal triumvirate is ready to lay waste to a bunch of European clubs!
The following press release was issued about the tour:
"Leading the mob will be San Francisco veterans Heathen, founded in 1984 – amongst others – by Exodus guitarist Lee Altus, they released two landmark albums with 'Breaking the Silence' (1987) and 'Victims of Deception' (1991) before things got a bit quiet in camp Heathen. They returned with the thrash manifesto 'The Evolution of Chaos' in 2010, and now the guys are busy working on new material.
"Generation Kill are being led by Exodus front beast Rob Dukes and offer a nasty mix of thrash metal and hardcore. Check out their brilliant debut 'Red, White and Blood' and bang those heads! The line-up is completed by Munich-based newcomers Dust Bolt who indulge in old school thrash metal goodness! They have recently released their great debut 'Violent Demolition.'" More...
The ink has finally dried and Nuclear Blast Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of the Bay Area’s indomitable thrash metal band Heathen, which was recently covered in our Sunday Old School column.
Founding member & guitarist Lee Altus comments on the new alliance:
“I'm really happy and couldn't think of a better label for Heathen. I've known people at Nuclear Blast, some of whom have been fans of the band going as far back as the early demo days, and have been friends with them for many years. It's amazing for me to think that throughout this band’s career, every album we recorded has been released on a different label. I can finally say that we have found home. Nuclear Blast has become a mecca for Bay Area thrash bands and we are happy to join our friends and partners in crime Exodus, Death Angel, Testament and Forbidden. Now it's time to get to work on the new album!”
Lead singer David White adds: “I want to thank all the fans for their amazing support; we do not take any of this lightly! Now we move forward with a true Metal record company that really understands what we're all about, 2012 and beyond!!!” More...
The wonderful thing about the thrash metal movement is that there were so many bands to find, it really is something of a treasure chest. Today we’ll look at a band which released some of the finest albums known to speed and thrash metal, but arguably haven’t got the recognition they deserve, Heathen. Heathen was formed in 1984 by former Metal Church drummer Carl Sacco and Russian guitarist Lee Altus and were initially accompanied by vocalist Sam Kress and guitarist Jim Sanguinetti before replacing them after their first gig with David Godfrey and Doug Piercy respectively, whilst also bringing in bass player Eric Wong. Although from the Bay Area and often associated with the thrash metal scene at the time, their music wasn’t strictly speaking contained in the thrash vein, as they also demonstrated more of a New Wave of British Heavy Metal influence than many of their peers. Although Wong decided to leave the group after the recording of their first demo, "Pray For Death" (being replaced by Mike "Yaz" Jastremski,) the demo was something of a success and earned the band a deal with Combat Records.
Their debut album, "Breaking The Silence" was released through the label in 1987 and was hailed as one of the best thrash metal albums of the year. It also contained something of a hit single in "Set Me Free," a cover of a song originally by British glam rock legends The Sweet. The song received regular rock radio airplay and the video was also broadcast frequently on MTVs Headbangers Ball show. While touring for the album however, Heathen ran into some internal difficulties, resulting in Sacco, Jastremski and Godfrey all leaving the group at some stage. Several well known vocalists were a part of Heathen for a while, including former Exodus frontman Paul Baloff and ex Metal Church singer, David Wayne. More...

One of Germany’s Big Three thrash bands, Destruction, once again brought its unique brand of thrash/speed metal back to San Antonio, Texas. With nearly 30 years under their bulleted belts, the Teutonic veterans hoped their longevity and legendary cult status would result in a massive gathering of denim-n-leather-gauntlet-fisted bangers.
This would not be the case, though. Even an impressive array of suitable acts that included the return of second-wave Cali Bay thrashers Heathen, the Texas thrash collective Warbeast, German black thrashers Nocturnal and more thrash in Witchhaven failed to bring in the masses on this Tuesday night. However, the dismal turn out did not stop the small-but-loyal crowd from acting like complete maniacs.
What might turn out to be the best thrash tour of the year encountered problems at its Central Texas stop a couple weeks before the event. Originally slated to appear at the Dirty Dog in Austin, the show moved to Backstage Live in San Antonio. Austinites complained about the drive, the lack of quality beer and parking fees. Many from the area with plans of attending the Austin show didn’t make the trek to SA. Those close to the promoter, Motorbreath Entertainment, stated that Austin would have resulted in an even poorer turnout. San Antonio is a bigger city and supposedly, the metal capital of the world, but it didn’t live up to its name on this night. More...
Bay Area thrash act Heathen been pummeling its way through the U.S. and Canada on tour with Destruction. The North American Reckoning Tour 2011 commenced on April 26th in Vancouver, and despite some stressful bus issues and being forced to miss a Detroit gig, has successfully pillaged its way through nearly two week's worth of dates with another week and a half to go.
Commented Heathen guitarist Kragen Lum from the road: "Well, the tour got off to a rough start but despite the tour bus breaking down, having to get another bus, and barely making it to the Denver show things are back on track. All of the shows have been killer and we're having a great time with the Destruction guys. We've got 13 shows left on the tour so come on out and get your thrash fix!"
In regards to the Detroit show, Lum added: "Apologies to any Heathen fans that came out to see us in Detroit [at Harpo's]. Unfortunately, the promoter for the show double booked the venue with two tours on the same night -- the Destruction tour and the Cavalera Conspiracy tour -- and then decided he couldn't pay all of the bands. Consequently, we were bumped from the bill along with another band and did not get to play. We were at the venue and ready to go but the situation was beyond our control. Hopefully we can come back to Detroit in the near future."

German thrash metal veterans Destruction have announced that Destroyer 666 will be unable to participate in the band's scheduled tour of North America this April, because guitarist and vocalist K.K. Speaking on the tour's lineup, Destruction front man Schmier stated:
"Destruction wishes Keith a safe and quick recovery! In the meantime, we are really happy to announce their old friends Heathen as a replacement for Deströyer 666! These Bay Area thrashers are one of my favorite thrash bands of all time and we will be sharing the European stages with them in some weeks on the Killfest tour. It's fantastic to have an opportunity to tour with old friends on both sides of the globe! German and Bay Area thrash together on tour - how much more kick-ass can it get?!
