Pit Stories: Bizzaro World Mindfuck

It's Pit Story day once again metal fans!

Today we've got a completely bonkers, off-the-wall story where every element of a show - from arrival and loadout all the way to what happened after getting home the next day - were so insane as to be a surreal, dreamlike experience.

This week's tale comes courtesy of guitarist Jordan Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana-based band Drude. Want more info on Drude? Head over to the band's Facebook profile here. Jordan tells the crazy pit story like this:

When I was asked to share a crazy pit story, narrowing it down became quite the challenge. Which really classifies as the craziest thing I've ever seen? Nude crowd surfing? Shooting up in the audience? Dude with a billiard ball in a bandanna blindly swinging it around at head level? Seeing as nude crowd surfing is awesome and junkies and reckless assholes will be served no honorable mention from me, I am going to with the Cleveland story. More of a crazy show story. Names and locations have been omitted intentionally.

The band I was in at the time pulled up to the building around 5 o'clock and we were met with all the hospitality you'd expect as a touring band. We were shown the place and got unloading. After getting our van stuck in the mud, we managed to make it inside and got setting up.

The time came for us to play and we noticed that people started bringing random trash into the building. I didn't wonder about it much, but by the next time I looked up, there was a dude 6 feet in the air crashing down on it. One by one, people were launching off of one another trying to absolutely obliterate this door. Once that had been destroyed, they brought in a wooden bench and starting completely fucking that thing up. Scraps of wood were flying all throughout the room. Mind you, we had fog machines and lights going, so this scene was just a completely intense sensory experience. Next were a few plastic lawn chairs falling victim to cinder blocks being thrown at them and exploding everywhere. Then I smelled burning. Somebody had lit a trash can on fire in the building.

I couldn't believe what was happening. It was amazing. After the havoc, we cleared the stage and began loading into the van. As soon as we got our gear out into the yard the skies broke into a torrential downpour, completely soaking all of our gear. After dealing with that the best we could, we went back in. As it turned out, the last band had left and decided that they weren't going to play. During our set there was a guy sitting on the couch in the back and our bass player had teasingly said something to the effect of "Come on get up, this isn't a coffee shop" and that so greatly offended the guy that he and his whole band left.

About an hour later a lady, who we had assumed was homeless judging by her clothing and demeanor, came in and started grabbing the mic from the final band and rapping into it. Saying all kinds of shit barely discernible through her badly slurred speech. After 10 or 15 minutes it had reached that "Ok, we get it" phase. Curiously, I asked one of the guys if this was a normal thing and why they didn't ask her to leave since she was clearly disrupting the show. The guy told me that there were some serious no bullshit crack dealers living across the street and that was their sister. The last time they kicked her out for coming in there and being a drunken mess, they were met with very convincing threats from their neighbors. So they just sort of had to let her do her thing and play along no matter how annoying or obnoxious she was being. She was harmless and sort of endearing.

Later that night, we were put up and fed by the promoter and the evening had seemed like a passing dream. The next day, we looked at the Facebook event page and it was blown up by some Neo-Nazi dudes just hammering away at how awful we were and making some really shitty comments about homosexuals and people with disabilities. It feels necessary to mention that he was in no way affiliated with the venue or promoters and they tried their best to have our backs. The whole thing was a complete Bizarro World mindfuck. I lost my favorite Sleep hoodie, but I gained a ridiculous story that I've probably told a hundred times since.

Three-piece metal outfit Drude (formerly known as Burn The Army) will release a new self-titled EP on March 3rd, 2017. Check out the title track below. More...

Replacire Streaming "Horsestance"

Boston's explosive, multi-faceted technical metal band Replacire is today streaming another new track from forthcoming album, "Do Not Deviate." The crushing, whirling amalgamation of extreme prog and death metal titled "Horsestance" can be heard below.

Regarding the track, guitarist Eric Alper comments: "'Horsestance' is my favorite song off the new record. The writing process was painless on this one, it flowed out naturally and hits hard! It's a flurry of downpicking slams, bouncy riffs, unique cleans, and visceral moments.

"Combining influence from multiple extreme bands it's a gross amalgamation of old Metallica's unrelenting picking style with the chromatic and unexpected note choice of Cannibal Corpse. It's one of the shortest songs we've ever written and in my mind represents the overall energy of the record. It's manic but deliberate, leaving something to be discovered with each listen. It features non-repeating parts but isn't linear, something we strive for throughout the album."

New album "Do Not Deviate" will be released by Season of Mist worldwide on March 17th, 2017 and features the following track listing:

1. Horsestance
2. Act, Re-enact
3. Built Upon the Grave of He Who Bends
4. Any Promise
5. Cold Repeater
6. Reprise
7. Moonbred Chains
8. Do Not Deviate
9. Spider Song
10. Traveling Through Abyss

OneGodLess Streaming "From The Ashes"

OneGodLess just released "From The Ashes," taken off the band's upcoming debut album coming in early 2017. A crowd funding campaign for the album is now live and can be found right here.

In late 2013, OneGodLess decided to bring nothing new. Since everything already had been done before, and everything else wouldn't be worth making, these brave young men decided to do something entirely different: to acknowledge their total lack of cutting edge, offering a mix of sounds like a lot of other groups before them.

Founding member Robin Zielhorst (ex-Cynic, Exivious), found like minded forces in Pieter Verpaalen (ex-Textures), Yordi Lopez (Red Eyes) and Yuma van Eekelen (Exivious, ex-Pestilence) to walk this beaten path of metal. The result is a grooving metal machine that does not stop until you're beating your head to the sound of the riffs. More...

Craven Idol Reveals "Shackles Of Mammon" Details

After four years of toil, London’s extreme metal force Craven Idol presents "The Shackles Of Mammon," an uncompromising and unique blend of metal from the early days of horrible hellnoise.

Recorded at Birmingham’s Priority Studios and engineered by Esoteric’s Greg Chandler (and mastered by Dan Lowndes at Resonance Sound), "The Shackles Of Mammon" boasts an old school production as well as Craven Idol’s most fierce and varied songs to date.

The album features artwork by the extraordinarily twisted Daniel Corcuera, with a take on Sascha Schneider’s 1896 wood carving "Mammon und sein Sklave." Lyrically the album deals with the vices of man, the plagues they unleashed upon themselves, and the rationalization of its own actions – be it in tragedy or ruin – through the creation of deities and cults. Felix Martin Streaming "Bom"

Felix Martin recently announced details regarding his upcoming 15-track full-length album, "Mechanical Nations," due out February 24th, 2017. Today Martin is revealing a brand new track, "Bom," which can be heard below.

"For this song, I wanted to see drums and guitar as one instrument, writing grooves for both instruments in a way that would make sense," says Martin. "This was the very first song I wrote using this guitar you see in the video (FM-907), which is a 9-string and a 7-string together, making it a guitar with 16-strings in one wide neck. I wanted to add that low 9-string open string (which is the lowest note I could possibly play) in a way that would sound heavy and big. I do this by slapping the guitar with my hand open."

He continues, "This song came to me after listening to a lot of industrial, prog and nu-metal music. It's influenced by the band Planet X with a bit of industrial vibe from Nine Inch Nails mostly at the middle, then a general electronic vibe in the interlude. I think Primus influenced this track too." More...

A Breach Of Silence Posts "Broken" Video

Australian act A Breach Of Silence just premiered a music video for "Broken." This is the second video clip from upcoming studio album "Secrets" - check it out below.

“'Broken' was written about depression, what it feels like at your lowest” states guitarist Mat Cosgrove. “While we were writing this album, our bassist Blair broke up with his girlfriend and it really tore him apart.”

Bassist Blair Layt continues, "it reflects a time in my life when I was the most depressed I've ever been. I just broke off an emotionally abusive relationship and my thick skin had been worn thin over its duration. I was suicidal, depressed and defeated. For a short time, I turned to drugs to numb the pain. I shut people out, and I almost forgot what it was like to be happy. Luckily, through the amazing support of friends and family, I managed to pull myself together, and take steps to better my state of mind, and return to the positive place I like to revel in. Looking back now, this song is a reminder for me of how far I've come since then. I hope that any of our fans feel those vibes when listening, and hopefully they may learn through my experience... that no matter how low you are, life can always get better if you allow it to... even if you think it can't.”

New album "Secrets" was produced by Fredrik Nordstrom (Bring Me the Horizon, Arch Enemy, In Flames) and mixed by Henrik Udd at Studio Fredman. It will be released worldwide via Eclipse Records on February 24th, 2017. More...
