New Book Looks At Early Days of Judas Priest
Neil Daniels is still heavy metal band Judas Priest's biggest fan – despite incurring the band's wrath by writing a controversial biography on them. The book charts the bands humble beginnings in West Bromwich to their rise to fame and everything in between.
Published in September by Omnibus the initial release of the book was marred by anger from the bands management over claims that it was their 'true story'. The band had world-wide success in the 1980s, selling millions of records and packing out Madison Square Garden in New York but only one book was written about them in 1984.
Neil said: "I thought they were an interesting bunch of guys. The main emphasis is on the early years which was a more overcast period in their career."
The band's management still maintain that the book is "not official and is not approved by the band" via their official website.
Neil responded: "I just think that they had a good story that I wanted to tell." The 25-year-old, from Peasley Cross, added: "I believe that if it had been official then it would be censored. "They would have shied away from talking about the darker side of rock and roll, the drinking, the drugs and the groupies. They all have families now after all."
Since the release of his first book, he has found the time in between working full time as a librarian to write a biography on Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant, chronicalling his time with the group and his expansive solo work, due out next year.

Metal Hammer Creating Dimebag Tribute Issue
Metal Hammer magazine recently announced its plans to create a massive tribute issue dedicated to Dimebag Darrell, and is inviting fans to contribute. They posted an article on their website:
If you haven't already, it isn't too late to get involved in our ultimate Dimebag tribute!
As many of you already know, and the response has been tremendous, we are hard at work on an extensive, once-in-a-lifetime tribute to the great man. All you need to do to be a part of it is to send us a simple picture of of yourself – whether it’s your Dime/Pantera tattoo, you and Dime or just you flippin’ the horns, send us your photos to dimetribute@futurenet.co.uk. The pictures can be digital, and can even be taken on your mobile phone!
We recently spoke to Dimebag’s brother and partner in music, Vinnie Paul about our tribute and when he and Dime first discovered a mutual love of music. "Once we started on music we were inseparable. Before that he was quite a bit smaller than me," Vinnie explained. "The first record I ever owned was Kiss' 'Alive'. After that it was Van Halen, and then 'Cat Scratch Fever' by Ted Nugent. Music had me hooked after that. I'd already started playing the drums. My dad was a musician which was no bad thing, it was always around the house. We were like a team. Inseparable. We thrived on music and learned as much as we could and couldnÂ’t wait to get together and play."
And as Vinnie goes on to describe, that was a bond that was to last right to the end. “ItÂ\’s incredible," he says. "We had the greatest chemistry in the world. We always knew where each other was going, especially musically, when we were writing or playing live or just having fun. We never felt in competition with each other. A lot of kids when they’re growing up get a lot of pressure from their parents about getting good grades and stuff. We were a team. We worked together and never felt that competition that other kids do."

Metal Journalist Bob Muldowney Dies At 44
Influential heavy metal journalist Bob Muldowney died Monday, November 5 after a long battle with cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease). He was 44 years old.
Muldowney was best known for his fanzine/magazine KickAss which helped expose, support and feature such bands as RAVEN, MOTORHEAD, VENOM, THE RODS, TANK, EXCITER and RIOT as well as burgeoning underground thrash scene, giving, in some instances, the first coverage to SLAYER, MEGADETH, MEDIEVAL, OVERKILL, and ANTHRAX. Muldowney was also one of the first journalists to expose the death metal scene in its infancy, offering early press to SODOM, HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST, DESTRUCTION and BATHORY. It was Bob's love of true, honest metal, which drove him to deliver a demo tape of a then-unknown California band called METALLICA into the hands of then-Rock 'n' Roll Heaven store owner (and future Megaforce Records head honcho) Jonny Z — who was advertising with KickAss at the time.
Bob's brutally honest approach in his coverage helped KickAss develop a deep, loyal following who viewed his writings as "the metal bible." However, financial and distribution difficulties overtook the magazine and the final issue of KickAss appeared in the fall of 1986.
Prior to his passing, Muldowney and fellow KickAss writer Mike Hannon had begun work on a DVD history of KickAss magazine in collaboration with former OVERKILL drummer-turned-director Rat Skates.
A funeral mass was held (today) at The Queen of the Most Holy Rosary in Roosevelt, New York.
Mike Gitter, Director of AnR at Roadrunner Records and former editor of xXx fanzine/magazine, issued the following statement regarding Muldowney's passing: "KickAss was enormously influential. Here was one of the first bona-fide metal mags that not only brought the underground to the foreground but also helped define the face of modern metal. Seeing Bob cover bands like CORROSION OF CONFORMITY or the CRUMBSUCKERS alongside METALLICA and RAVEN really set the template for what was to continue for decades afterwards. That kind of coverage really helped bring metal from being a one-note, one-mentality affair and gave it a diversity and a sense of street that could only come from someone whose sole mission was to expose kids to new sounds and new bands. Today's MySpace generation takes this sort of thing for granted. It's all at our fingertips. The sense of discovery is somewhat lost. As a fellow former zine publisher (xXx fanzine), let's pour out a 40oz-er for our fallen homie and thank Bob and KickAss for their hand in shaping metal as we know it."
Monte Conner, Senior VP AnR of Roadrunner Records, commented: "Though I only met Bob once and corresponded with him a few times, he is definitely someone whom I looked up to as a mentor back in the mid-Eighties. Through his magazine KickAss, I was able to learn about and discover the cream of the crop of the emerging speed/thrash/power/death metal scene. KickAss, along with Metal Forces, was my Bible back then — the way I discovered new bands and fed my insatiable appetite for all things emerging in the underground. It was through reading KickAss and the connections I made by writing to the bands Bob covered that I was able to develop my expertise in this type of music — the expertise that helped me get my foot in the door at Roadrunner and guided my success here in the early days."
Longtime rock journalist Don Kaye had this to say: "Like others, I didn't know Bob Muldowney all that well — in some ways he was a man of mystery. I spoke with him a handful of times and briefly did some work for KickAss early on. But the scope of what he did with this little publication out of Long Island was powerful. His 'zine was one of a handful around the globe that exposed the underground metal scene, giving it a base from which it became a worldwide phenomenon and launched the careers of too many bands and musicians to mention. He was also boldly opinionated and passionate — when he hated something, he did not hold back, but when he loved a band, he championed it with an incredible enthusiasm and energy that is becoming harder and harder to find in these jaded times. Here's hoping the metal is loud wherever he is."

Marilyn Manson Returns To Perth, Australia
Returning for the first time since the now-infamous Big Day Out festival in 1999 - when he walked off stage after being hit by a bottle - Marilyn Manson played Perth's Challenge Stadium on Saturday 15th October, with Melbourne all-girl band The Spazzys in support.
As the venue filled with goths and wannabe goths. The Spazzys played some Ramones-inspired pop-punk and received a largely disinterested response, although they weren't booed off stage as apparently happened at the Melbourne show. The crowd were there to see one man and weren't in an accommodating mood. More...
Sepultura Guitarist Checks In From India
SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser has issued the following update:
"New Delhi, India (Oct. 26-29, 2007): After resting from the long journey, we had the first interview to do. It was made in a rock bar, with many journalists and many fans.
I had the first real experience with the Indian traffic. Me, my wife Patricia and others were lost, and it was hard to find the place we supposed to be to do the press conference. It was a good chance to see a little bit of the Indian capital. Finally we got there and the press people were very excited to talk to us and we were too. It was great to feel their welcome.
"I visited some beautiful places in Delhi like the India Gate, a monument built honoring the Indian soldiers that fought at the World War I, similar to the Triumph Arc in Paris. At the other side of the Arc, following the road, is the Government Palace, residence of the Indian Prime Minister. Other nice place was the Qutub Minar, a huge tower built 1.000 years ago, the tallest tower in Delhi. Around the tower are the ruins of a school and many tombs from unknown people.
"But Delhi, like any other big city, is chaotic. The poverty on the streets is mind-blowing. Starving families begging for food, money and anything they can get. People living in unbelievable conditions, but they are very nice, not violent at all and they seem conformed with their situation.
"We played at an open air venue that was full of anxious SEPULTURA fans. The show was great, they knew all the songs and their reaction was amazing. The adrenaline we felt on stage helped us to feel better and to minimize the effects of the jet lag.
"Next day, we traveled by bus to Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. On the way to Agra we pass trough Mathura, the birth place of Krishna, with many temples and pilgrims. Every time we pass a state border we had to stop to pay a toll and every time we stopped people gathered around the bus trying to sell things, with monkeys jumping around on a leash, snakes charmers, etc…
"Agra is dirtier and more chaotic than anything else I ever experienced, but as soon we arrived at the Taj Mahal everything changed. The place is beautiful, magical, peaceful, unbelievable. We spent some hours there learning about the history with a local guide. It's a story of love, passion, great strength and faith. Amazing! We took the road back and we rested at the Hotel for the travel next day to Shillong. What an adventure! [End of Indian tour diary]
"Yesterday I went to see Steve Vai here in Sao Paulo [Brazil]. A true master of the guitar. Incredible show with an amazing band behind him. I came backstage to talk to him after the gig and he was very nice, he told me that he bought SEPULTURA albums in the '90s. I was very happy to hear that, he´s a great influence on my music for a long time. I like to send a 'Big Thanks' to Jeremy, the drummer, who arranged all the passes for this unforgettable night and for an awesome performance! Valeu!!!"
In a recent interview with Romania's Metalhead TV, Andreas Kisser stated about the band's current touring/recording plans, "Our intention, really, is to play as much as we can to prepare this band to start writing new material. So we're gonna start writing a new album at the end of the year, hopefully to release next year, sometime in the second [half of 2008]."

Avenged Sevenfold Chart At #4 On Billboard Top 200
Zacky Vengeance has issued the following thanks to fans for their #4 Billboard debut of their latest self-titled album:
"It’s kind of funny to wake up and see the words Avenged Sevenfold at the #4 spot on the billboard top 200. Right next to The Eagles and a Britney/Carrie Underwood threesome. I don’t know about you but it puts a smirk on my face just knowing that our fans tattooed it right on the foreheads of everyone who would quickly disregard the name Avenged Sevenfold (like we aren’t a fucking force to be reckoned with, Haha). So once again thank you from the bottom of our hearts."
"MTV has decided to debut our video for almost easy on TRL which makes me believe that someone over at MTV is screaming for something real. I’ll be honest with you, when I roll out of bed every morning my goal in life isn’t to be alongside popstars or actors and actresses or on the cover of the national enquirer. It sure does feel good though to surprise all those people that don’t even know what "an A7X" is by putting them right behind us on the countdown or going home with their moonman."
"With that said if you wanna vote and bury whatever else they’re playing at the moment you can do that here. If not we’re still coming to your city to kick ass and have a great fucking time with all of you. Thank you all again for every ounce of support love and respect!"
"Avenged Sevenfold," the self-titled and self-produced follow-up to the 2005 million-selling "City of Evil," topped also the Billboard Alternative, Hard and Rock Charts this week in addition to its #4 debut on the Billboard Top 200. This marked the biggest sales week ever for the Huntington Beach-based band. "Avenged Sevenfold" was released on October 30th by Warner Bros. Records.
"Almost Easy," the first single for the album, exploded into the Top 10 at Active Rock and Top 20 at Alternative in less than a month. In addition, the video for "Almost Easy" is in MTV2's You Rock The Deuce Countdown and the Number One Most Played Video on Fuse. The video will also be a First Look video today on MTV's TRL.

Children Of Bodom Bassist Posts Update
CHILDREN OF BODOM bassist Henkka T. Blacksmith has checked in with the following studio update:
"The darkness is crazy, it's also funny how it surprises every time. At 6 pm its totally dark. And the days are getting shorter shorter and shorter. And it rains! But inside the studio it is nice and warm. The bass tracks were done last week and at the moment Alexi (Laiho - guitars and vocals) is finishing his solos. That means that all that is left is the keyboard sounds, and vocals. Janne (Wirman - keyboards) has already started working last week and he has recorded most of his stuff, but later on we still have to choose the sounds, the final sounds. So next week will be exciting, when we start choosing sounds, and recording the vocals. It's also the last week in the studio."
Children Of Bodom's as-yet-untitled new album is being recorded by producer/mixer/engineer Mikko Karmila and will feature a guest appearance from Peter Tägtgren (HYPOCRISY, PAIN). The album will see their forthcoming new album available in Europe on April 7th via Spinefarm. Prior to the album's release, a new single will be available as of March 3rd.

Dillinger Escape Plan Guitarist Talks Creativity
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN guitarist Ben Weinman has penned a guest blog for Headbanger's Blog talking about staying creative and keeping music real and raw. An excerpt follows:
"Since our third full-length record, 'Ire Works', is coming out in a next few days, I have been doing countless interviews. Sure, most of the questions sound like a record skipping, but every now and again people ask you things that actually make you, for the first time, analyze what it is you were trying to do. It's like forced introspection. One minute you're trying to deal with obstacle after obstacle just to get the thing done, and then, all of a sudden, you have a finished record and people are asking you what your approach was and what you were trying to achieve.
"Then there is the 'What sets you guys apart from other bands?' question. In reality… not much. I mean, I have more in common with some band I hate than I do with the guy I went to high school with who now owns a landscaping company, or even the writer asking me the questions. We make music, you tell us whether it is worthy or not. No matter how I answer these questions some guy in a magazine, or some kid who plays with himself all day on the Internet is going to tell me that my band is not as good as some other band. At the end of the day, these interview questions do make you think, and while I realize what I'm about to say is just my opinion, I guess I have as much right to discuss these things as anyone else."

Otep To Film Two New Videos
OTEP frontwoman Otep Shamaya has issued the following update:
"As I sit here sipping stale coffee and waiting for the bus to pick us up from the hotel, it dawned on me that I haven't written any updates or tour diaries (properly) yet. So here it is, enjoy.
"To begin with, the shows have been amazing. Each time we go out the level of your intensity increases beyond our wildest expectations. Thank you for your support, your belief, and your passion.
"Next, YES! 'The_Ascension' has been released and YES, some places have different versions. You get two extra tracks at Best Buy, Newbury Comics has autographed copies (yes we did them ALL by hand), and iTunes has an additional spoken-word piece (I wrote and recorded) PLUS it includes an exclusive digital booklet specifically designed for iTunes! I've been told the infuriating iTunes error has been remedied and all systems are GO! I just bought the album and downloaded it and it plays just fine.
"We get a lot of messages about where to buy the album, so hopefully this clears it up.
"OH! We are also about to release two new videos created with the visual genius, PR Brown. 'Confrontation' and 'Breed' should be released very soon and, as expected, we are extremely excited about them. 'Confrontation' will have a really unique feature that includes fan involvement but I can't reveal too much more about that or it would ruin the surprise."
OTEP's new album, "The_Ascension", sold 10,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 81 on The Billboard 200 chart.
Produced by Dave Fortman (MUDVAYNE, EVANESCENCE), "The_Ascension" sees the band challenging itself to avoid clichés and classifications and finding a new landscape of sound and vision. "We said 'genre limits and music fads be damned, let's write music that is important to us and that motivates us," explained Shamaya. "I wanted to write songs we believe in and let nothing stop us from building the album we want to make."
Rob Zombie Talks White Zombie Box Set
Rob Zombie recently spoke to Gary Graff of Billboard.com about the long-delayed WHITE ZOMBIE box set. "I always keep putting it on the back burner to do other projects," he said. "I'm not real good at going back and wanting to re-do old stuff. I always want to do new stuff, so that's why that project keeps dragging on forever."
He does have a plan for it, however — "Basically every single thing ever so that I could put out the box set and say, 'That's everything. Don't ask me about anything else. That's everything that band ever recorded,' 'cause there isn't a lot of extra stuff. But there's tons of stuff that was never on CD, that was on these limited vinyl releases."
As to whether the WHITE ZOMBIE box will finally see a 2008 release, Zombie — who's currently touring with OZZY OSBOURNE — offered a definite "maybe. If I wait much longer, no one will know what a boxed set is."
Six Feet Under Drummer Working On New Project
SIX FEET UNDER drummer Greg Gall is currently writing/recording material with a new, yet to be named band. The guitarist spot has been filled by Brian Loyd (www.bloyd.net).
Gall comments: "The entire recording is being done at John and Donald Tardy's (OBITUARY) studio in Tampa. So far, pre-production is under way and has been a very stress free experience. We've really had the luxury of time on our side. It's given us the ability to focus and really put everything we have into each song. John and Donald's input has been priceless in engineering and producing the effort to this point. We're working to record 4 songs prior to filling the bassist and vocal positions, which we look to do around December or early January. Then we'll spend some time shopping for label interest.
This is going to be more than just a side project; it'll be something I think will really go a long way. We've spent a lot of time on this material and what Brian and I have written so far has me really looking forward to adding the remaining pieces of this band and the release of our inaugural CD."
Sirenia Launch Vocalist Search
Norwegian gothic metal band SIRENIA has launched a vocalist search following the recent departure of Danish singer Monika Pedersen due to "musical differences." "We are looking for a talented singer with experience, a cool image and a strong passion for music," the group says in a statement. "Someone who is willing to give the band a high priority for many years to come. Please send us a biography, some recent photos and an mp3/wma file of your voice. If you have your own MySpace site, send us the link."
All submissions should be sent to singer@sirenia.no.
SIRENIA's new album, "Nine Destinies and a Downfall", entered the German Media Control chart in March at position No. 54. The album was recorded at Jailhouse studios in Norway with engineer Hans Eidsgard and Soundsuite studios in France with Terje Refsnes and was mixed and mastered at Antfarm studios in Aarhus, Denmark with Tue Madsen.
The Haunted Frontman Talks About Addiction
THE HAUNTED frontman Peter Dolving has posted the following message on his MySpace blog:
"Addiction is a used car salesman. It don't give up just 'cause I ain't buying.
"Hell no.
"Instead it goes 'Awwwwwrightee then... Back to the drawing board...' Out come the bling. The little flags and the giant light bulb displays. It turns up on my TV singin' 'Come on down lil buddy! Have we got somethin fer you!'
"You might sit in your little futon converter couch smokin sweet bud chucklin at the sheer concept of addiction. 'Yeah, yeah right... fuckin crybabies.'
"Still, just cause you happen to be that dude who's not suckin syphilitic pimp dick in a room with needle sprayed blood on the walls, moldy mattresses and the mixed stink of vomit, chemical stress and cat piss filling the room — don't mean addiction ain't checkin out your white, middle-class, gym-toned ass. When you head out to the kitchen for a peanutbutter n jelly sandwich, singin along to some lame BURZUM tune; Diggin' the ridiculous wayward thought that 'THIS is actually great music!', ADDICTION is getting a hard-on. No, it doesn't mean you're an addict.
"Maybe 10-15% of the population are addicts.
"But addiction itself digs that bullshit.
"One can discuss the pros and cons of narcotics forever. But as long as someone is making money off our greedy hunger for relief from stress or pain and anxiety — narcotics, like religion, are always going to be a problem.
"A coca farmer in the South American jungle ain't to blame. Nor is the poppy farmer in Burma, or the Cannabis grower in Washington or Lebanon. As long as we chose keeping up with, and supporting an unbearably inhumane structure and culture — we will feel the need to escape it.
"Consumption itself (whatever the hell you choose buying), is so deeply rooted in this world. As evidence of and symbol for your 'freedom.' An elusive abstract based in an enviroment of slave economy — that we, little buddy, have become addicted to.
"It's funny and fucked up at once; like heroin helps alleviate the pain of some addicts — cash is the thing that makes perfect sense to most folks in abusing.
"Buy or die. Still — the consequences remain, for we never reach the core of the problem. No war on drugs or war on terror is going to change that. The real villains are the choices we make. The choices.
"We can't blame the mad scientist or crazed entrepeneurs, nor the corrupt politicians and legislators. Their basic incentives all come from somewhere.
"And THAT is our crime." More...

Nidrike Adds New Guitarist
Anticipating signing a record deal eventually, Nidrike has decided to add another guitarist to the camp.
Gorgoth comments: "Since were gonna start recording our debut-album in December we wish to have a line-up that can play the most parts live in the studio so that we get that real band feeling over it all. Sure, the bass and most vocals will be added, but the basics will be live and thats important for us. BUT! This doesnt mean that Nidrike will play live-gigs, although we already have got offers regarding both European dates and a North-American tour. The thing is to be straight with you all, Liedheim wont play live since he don't like being on stage. Its hard enough to get him into a studio and rehearsing if theres anyone else but the band in the rehearsing room. So, if we ever are going to play live, we would need a live-drummer and as it looks right now, we aint gonna do that.
The band has added Aamoth also from Vanmakt to play the other guitar in the studio.
Gorgoth continues: "I'm currently writing the final tracks for the album and were rehearsing as much as we can so that we will be ready to enter a friends studio in December. I can't say how many songs there will be on the album, and I can't say any titles or so on. But what I can say is that it will be fast and chaotic! True disgusting and
fast blackmetal!! We will kick everyones as, and if you think that you have heard really good blackmetal, you're wrong, cause our album will smash everything!"
You can check out some of Nidrike's past material on their MySpace page.
Prosthetic Records To Reissue Testament Albums
Prosthetic Records has officially announced reissues from Bay Area metal legends Testament. Comments Lamb of God drummer Chris Adler: "Testament is far and away one of the most influential bands in all of modern metal. While other veteran acts soak up much of the spotlight with sing a-longs, Testament maintains the unsurpassed musicianship, integrity and brutality that continues to create an untouchable legacy."
