Soen

Formed: 2010
From: Sweden
Last Known Status: Active

Background

While initially formed in 2004, it was only in May 2010 that the formation of Soen was announced, its lineup consisting of former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, ex-Death, Testament and Sadus bassist Steve DiGiorgio, Willowtree vocalist Joel Ekelöf and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis.

Drummer Martin Lopez has described Soen's music as "melodic, heavy, intricate and very different than everything else." Their debut, "Cognitive," was released in February 2012 to positive critical reception, the members' technical proficiency receiving most praise, though many reviewers noted extreme stylistic similarities to the music of Tool.

Soen Posts "Lucidity" Video

Soen - featuring drummer Martin Lopez (formerly of Amon Amarth and Opeth) and the dynamic voice of Joel Ekelöf (Willowtree) - will release new album "Lykaia" on February 3rd, 2017 via UDR Music.

After initially introducing the album to fans with the charging, groovy first single "Sectarian," Soen is now returning to showcase another side of the band's sound by premiering the smooth, downtempo prog rock track "Lucidity."

Lopez explained the track in an interview with Billboard: "This song represents a time in my life when I unconsciously walked towards self-destruction and celebrates, to an extent, the death of that lifestyle and the birth of a new era. It's dark but comforting. The music is soft and dreamy but carries the tension of a past-life full of mistakes."

Recorded at Ghost Ward, Studio Gröndal, and Deep Well in Stockholm, with production duties handled by guitarist Marcus Jidell and mixing by Stefan Boman, Soen kept things as far away from the digital age as possible on "Lykaia," embracing warmth and organic recordings as the drive behind the technical working process. The full track listing is as follows: More...

Soen Reveals New Album Details

Soen, the progressive group featuring the otherworldly-driven drumming of Martin Lopez (formerly of Amon Amarth and Opeth) and the dynamic voice of Joel Ekelöf (Willowtree), is now takeing another trip into uncharted waters.

Upcoming third offering "Lykaia" is due out February 3rd, 2017 via the band's new label home UDR Music and will be available digitally, on CD digisleeve, and gatefold vinyl. The label comments that this album sees Soen "remain fascinated with the shadows and the darker edges of our world, with a particular focus on the various thoughts and concepts behind religion and ritualistic, belief-based behavior in society."

Recorded at Ghost Ward, StudioGröndal and Deep Well in Stockholm, Sweden, with production duties handled by guitarist Marcus Jidell and the mix made by Stefan Boman, Soen kept things as far away from the digital age as possible, embracing warmth and organic recordings as the drive behind the technical working process.

Vocalist Joel Ekelöf states, "Wherever we could the music was analog, all the sounds you hear were pure and not samples or keyboard generated. When we needed a Mellotron, we got a real one. With my vocals as well, we intentionally left out the endless possibilities of post editing and instead focused on pure vocal work." More...

Soen Releases "The Words" Video

Prog metal band Soen, which released latest album "Tellurian" via Spinefarm Records earlier this month, today shares the video for "The Words." Spinefarm Records comments:

"The clip is more like a mini-film than it is a standard music video. The visuals advance a powerful and emotionally evocative plot + narrative, spliced with footage of the band performing in subdued fashion.

"Overall, the video is epic and cinematic in scope, just like the song. So shut down all of your other computer windows and focus squarely on Soen's 'The Words' video. Allow it to take you on a beautiful and anything-but-simple black and white journey, both visually and musically." More...

Soen Announces New Album

It's hard to put a handle on Soen, but if progressive music is "entertainment for those who are easily bored," then this Swedish outfit fits easily under that heading.

New album "Tellurian" is due out November 4th, 2014 and follows previous full-length "Cognitive" (reviewed here). The following press release was issued about the coming album:

"As the forthcoming second studio album Tellurian makes plain, Soen - that's drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth, Amon Amarth), vocalist Joel Ekelöf (Willowtree), guitarist Joakim Platbarzdis and bassist Stefan Stenberg - is not concerned with the simple or the shallow; the musical journey takes an altogether more ambitious path, and the result is an expansive body of work, wrapped up in the stunning art of Mexican painter José Luis López Galván, that consistently challenges without being 'clever-clever' or tough to enjoy. Soen Streaming "Savia" Track

Today Decibel Magazine is hosting a stream of “Savia” from progressive metal supergroup, Soen. Hear the song at this location. The tune comes courtesy of the band’s "Cognitive" debut initially released digitally via Spinefarm Records last Winter, and due out in North America later this summer.

Featuring the all-star lineup of drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth, Amon Amarth), bassist Steve DiGiorgio (Sadus, Testament, Death, Iced Earth), vocalist Joel Ekelöf (Willowtree), and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis, "Cognitive" was mixed by David Bottrill (Tool, Coheed and Cambria, Silverchair, Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, etc.), mastered by João Carvalho, and features ten tracks of what Lopez describes as “melodic, heavy, intricate and different.” The following press release was also issued about the band:

"When Lopez joined forces with DiGiorgio, Ekelöf, and Platbarzdis, it was obvious that this collaboration would not be another name-dropping, substance-deprived 'super project.' The foursome paint their musical canvas with broad strokes that on first listen may appear gray and sullen, but the true power of the music lies clandestine, just a little below the monochrome surface. More than just a sum of its rather esteemed parts, Soen weave an intricate network of melody and melancholy. More...

Finnish Metal Expo 2012 Day One

After being in Finland for a full year now, I once again was able to attend the annual Finnish Metal Expo in Helsinki. A good omen for the weekend was the fact that for the first time in weeks, the weather was not so freezing that my fingers would be tempted to fall off.

Perhaps a difference from last year, that I had noticed immediately was the fact the exhibition itself had shrunk a bit. Less guests, and less retail stands of course means smaller crowds and I wondered just what that would mean for the rather exciting lineup this year, which featured Swallow the Sun, ICS Vortex, Turisas and many more!
