Soen

Formed: 2010
From: Sweden
Last Known Status: Active

Background

While initially formed in 2004, it was only in May 2010 that the formation of Soen was announced, its lineup consisting of former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, ex-Death, Testament and Sadus bassist Steve DiGiorgio, Willowtree vocalist Joel Ekelöf and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis.

Drummer Martin Lopez has described Soen's music as "melodic, heavy, intricate and very different than everything else." Their debut, "Cognitive," was released in February 2012 to positive critical reception, the members' technical proficiency receiving most praise, though many reviewers noted extreme stylistic similarities to the music of Tool.

70,000Tons Of Metal Announces Destination Change

70000TONS OF METAL, The Original, The World’s Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise, has announced a change in the destination for its 2026 voyage. The upcoming edition of the festival at sea, taking place from January 29 to February 2, 2026, will now sail from Miami, Florida to Nassau, the Bahamas aboard Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas.

Originally planned to return to Labadee, Haiti, the decision to reroute the journey was made out of an abundance of caution and with the well-being of all Sailors, artists, and crew as the top priority.

"While Labadee has been a great port of call on past sailings, we are closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti and its surrounding regions," said Andy Piller, Skipper of 70000TONS OF METAL. "Ensuring the safety and comfort of our Survivors is non-negotiable. With that in mind, we’ve made the proactive decision to change course for 2026. Nassau provides a welcoming alternative that allows us to maintain the world-class experience our Sailors expect — both on board and ashore." More...

Soen Releases "Violence" Music Video

Soen have released the piercing new single "Violence," which is taken from their forthcoming album "Memorial," set for release on September 1st via Silver Lining Music. You can check out the video below.

Founding member and singer Joel Ekelöf comments: "Violence touches the topic of coercion, whether it is physical or mental. Violence can sometimes be delivered very cautiously in ways that don’t give room for a reaction but with the passing of time will destroy your confidence and self-regard."

The new track is as biting and abrasive as its theme along with a melodic grace that transcends across the whole of the new album.

"It’s a different song for us musically speaking, it’s very direct and full of darkness and anger." Adds co-founding member and drummer Martin Lopez.

Today the band are excited to announce twenty-five new dates seeing them bring "Memorial" to the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tour will kick-off in May 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. Fan exclusive 48-hour pre-sale available from August 23rd 3pm EST (8pm BST). General on sale available from August 25th 3pm EST (8pm BST).

A meeting of melodic magnitude with face-crushingly heavy guitars and driving rhythms, the new single "Memorial" has a ferocious groove, underlying the weighty subject of war and evocative vocals of Joel Ekelöf.

"It is a song to remind us of the victims of the power games that our so-called leaders play," comments founding member and drummer Martin Lopez.

"It’s about PTSD” explains vocalist and co-founding member Joel Ekelöf, “and the effect war has on people like you and me that are sent to kill and die and have to pay that price for the rest of their lives." More...

"This year’s festival will take place over four days and we’re lucky enough to start the party on night one, June 8th. Hitting the stage as headliners the other two nights are Slipknot and Bring Me The Horizon. The long weekend will be jam-packed including Evanescence, Parkway Drive, Disturbed, Pendulum, Architects, Ghost, The Distillers, Placebo, Alexisonfire, Asking Alexandria, Motionless In White, I Prevail, The Blackout (reunion), Fever 333, Stray From The Path, Lorna Shore, Nova Twins and Municipal Waste, with many more still to be announced.

"Fifth Members may purchase tickets now. General tickets are on-sale at 10 AM on Thursday, November 10th."
