Trivium was formed in 2000 in Altamonte Springs Florida - Travis Smith, Matt Heafy and two other band mates met at Travis's house to learn and cover "For Whom the Bell Tolls" for his high school's Battle of the Bands competition. Even though they were inexperienced, they quickly formulated a band - the aggression of Trivium was popular among the high school crowd. Shortly after the Battle of the Bands show Trivium performed in a local music contest, Indiefest, taking 2nd place overall. After a couple local party gigs, Trivium's original singer left the band.

It was decided that Matt would take on the lead vocal duties as well as being the lead & rhythm guitarist and a search was underway for a rhythm guitarist. An old band mate of Travis', Brent Young earned the spot. With the new line up, Trivium played several garage gigs, party gigs, small clubs, and high school level competitions, gaining experience and writing more original songs. Soon, Trivium headed into a local studio to record a three-song demo.

Brent eventually moved to bass after Trivium's bassist departed.

Trivium's fan base began to grow, the band began to receive more local buzz and awards. Carrying a full set of originals, Trivium tore up club after club during the summer, opened for national acts - placed 1st for Battle of the Bands in high school and Matt was awarded The Best Metal Guitarist Award for 2002 presented by The Orlando Metal Awards.

Trivium recorded four more originals for their next demo. After this demo was recorded the musical direction of the band changed to something that the band and critics categorize as Melodic Death Metalcore. After one more 7-song demo EP, LifeForce records from Germany signed the band in May of 2003 and the band released 'Ember To Inferno' before adding second guitarist Corey Beaulieu and joining Roadrunner in April 2004.

Slayer Frontman Explains U.A. Trivium Slot

In a recent interview with Thrash Hits, Slayer frontman Tom Araya explained why more established acts like Trivium and Mastodon were being given slots on the Unholy Alliance tour instead of younger groups. An excerpt from the conversation is as follows:

Q: Some people would say that you, Slayer, are in a position to give smaller bands much-needed exposure by taking them on tour with you, rather than taking Trivium and Mastodon out who are already established.

A: "I hate to say this, but at this stage of the game, for as many years as we’ve been out as a band, it’s about income. When it comes to having a band who you would love to give exposure to, in all honesty, you would have to be really wowed by that band. I can honestly say that there’s only been one other band in recent times that has done that for us, and that’s SYSTEM OF A DOWN. Nobody knew them, but we heard them and we were like ‘Fuck! Let’s take these guys out on the road’. And look what happened."

Trivium Announces Title Of New Album

Trivium has officially announced the release of "Shogun," their third album for Roadrunner Records. "Shogun" will be released on September 30.

Trivium has changed it up yet again on "Shogun," choosing not to record in the familiar environs of their home state of Florida. Instead the band headed to Nashville, Tennessee to work with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters, Stone Sour). The result is "a monolithic album that crystallizes the band's sound and showcases Trivium's finest elements."

Vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy is thrilled with the album, saying, "We made a cohesive, epic metal album that combines all of the ingredients of everything we feel we have ever done 'right' musically, while adding a new direction that the music called for. We had so much fun creating this album and hope our fans feel that energy when they listen."

Even Slayer's Kerry King expressed excitement about touring with the band this fall on the "Unholy Alliance: Chapter 3" European tour. He commented to the UK's Total Guitar magazine, "I'll be at the side of the stage watching them. Great players like that make us want to do better."

Metallica Covers Iron Maiden For Kerrang Tribute

Metallica has revealed that they recorded a cover of Iron Maiden's "Remember Tomorrow," off the band's self-titled debut album. Here's the update from Metallica'a MySpace blog:

"We were honored to be asked to participate in Kerrang's exclusive 'Maiden Heaven' tribute album... one of those super cool Kerrang! CD's that you can only get when you buy the mag. In this case, the issue (1219) goes on sale in the UK on July 16 and for those of you somewhere else, you can pick it up online at http://www.kerrang.com.

"We picked 'Remember Tomorrow' from Iron Maiden's self titled first album... it was basically the blueprint for songs like 'Fade to Black' and 'Sanitarium' and when we were jamming our way thru most of our favorite early Maiden songs, this one stood out and also came together somewhat effortlessly... we had a blast recording it at HQ in the middle of all the insanity of the last two weeks of finishing the new album back in May. Some of our other favorite bands recorded their own versions of Maiden songs too... Machine Head, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed And Cambria, Dream Theater to name a few. There are more details in the current issue of Kerrang! or on their site... or check out the "official" press release here.

Trivium To Open For Iron Maiden in New Jersey

Trivium have announced that they will join metal legends Iron Maiden as "Special Guest" for one show on Saturday, June 14 at New Jersey's PNC Bank Arts Center on the Somewhere Back in Time Tour.

Following the worldwide success of "The Crusade" album (which charted at No 7 in the UK and No 25 in Billboard), Trivium have been tucked away in the studio in Tennessee since January with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters, Death Angel) working on the follow up recording for Roadrunner Records.

Comments Trivium frontman, Matt Heafy, "Trivium is honored to again be asked to play a show with Iron Maiden. We supported them for a full European tour in 2006 and it was one of the best touring experiences we've ever had as a band. Maiden are absolute legends and we hoped one day we would have another chance to share a stage with them. When they called us for this special show we couldn't say yes fast enough. We'll just be getting out of the studio and won't even be touring yet but we're going to enjoy the show and then have the opportunity to watch Maiden do what they do best - kick ass on stage."

Trivium Frontman Speaks On New Material

Orlando metallers TRIVIUM are currently in pre-production for their new album, tentatively due before the end of the year via Roadrunner Records. The as-yet-untitled CD will be produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who has previously worked with FOO FIGHTERS, RUSH, VELVET REVOLVER, SHADOWS FALL, STONE SOUR and DEATH ANGEL, among others. Guitarist/vocalist Matt Heafy writes in an online posting, "20 songs recorded: 20. 20!!! We've NEVER recorded this many songs for an album ever 20!!! I mean hot damn! And these are all DEMOS. These have been the most extensive demos we have ever done, before we'd merely just do a quick demo of the songs we were to record for the upcoming album. This time we wrote it, re-wrote it, worked and arranged, recorded and re-recorded so it's gonna be good. Next step is for me to write the lyrics and vocals for the latest batch of 10 songs, record those then we'll have our producer come down and we will work out the kinks of all 20 tracks and wittle them down and pick the absolute best songs for the new album. Then? Actually do it. Haha. We're so happy with the new material. It's our strongest material to date; it encompasses everything that is TRIVIUM to the four of us and to our fans."

In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, TRIVIUM guitarist Corey Beaulieu stated about the upcoming CD, "We want to capture the best ingredients of everything we've done. Each song has a little bit of everything, going between something heavy and then melodic, and then back to something heavy. So it has a really interesting balance. On 'The Crusade', Matt did almost all singing, so this time we're bringing back some of the screaming that's on 'Ascendancy'."

"I'm also trying new things vocally," Heafy added. "Live, I've been able to really push the high vocal part of my range in the style of Rob Halford. So maybe I'll put some of that on the album."
