Kataklysm Leads A Death Metal Charge In London
Death metal is quite a strange genre when you think about it. No one can deny that it changed metal music forever, taking on the intensity of thrash and transforming it into something more aggressive, ferocious and altogether beastly. Yet, as influential as it is, few get to really stand out. It's perhaps the most overcrowded of all metal sub-genres, but nonetheless, the cream rises to the top and in Islington, North London tonight, fans got to witness three of the very best to have every done it ply their trade.
Norway's reputation in metal is always very much focused on the infamous black metal scene, but they have always had a strong death metal presence too. There have been a number of groups which come highly recommended, but one that has always been one of the first names on people's lips is Kristiansand's own, Blood Red Throne. Only two months ago, they released their latest album, "Siltskin," their second with vocalist Sindre Wathne Johnsen, who only joined in 2023, so it's an exciting time to catch the Scandinavian veterans. This being my first time seeing Blood Red Throne, I can't compare their performance to previous lineups, but I can tell you that they meant business and straight away, they got the party started, egging on the crowd as they appropriately launched into, "Unleashing Hell."
While it was a relatively small crowd at the Academy tonight, though by no means empty, everyone was in a great mood and were very receptive towards Blood Red Throne, chanting their name frequently throughout the set. Of course, being an opening act, they had a fairly short stage time, but nonetheless were able to fit in some favourites, with "Itika" from the "Imperial Congregation" record going down particularly well. Their latest offering was also represented with "Beneath The Means" and "Vermicular Heritage," before the curtain came down, metaphorically, with "Smite." Though their time was short, their impact was huge and Blood Red Throne delivered a hell of a performance. More...

Brutal Assault Reveals Daily Lineups
Brutal Assault, the annual celebration for all fans of extreme music, announces the division of bands by day for this year’s edition. At the same time, single-day ticket sales have been launched – available for all five days of the festival.
The festival traditionally kicks off on Tuesday with a warm-up event, giving visitors a chance to get pumped up for the four days of sonic mayhem to follow. This year’s warm-up will feature thrash/speed maniacs Carnivore A.D., Norwegian doom prophets Funeral, and cult American trio Macabre. Representing the Czech scene is a handpicked lineup: Marked As An Enemy, Cutterred Flesh, Pan Lynx, Faüst, and See You In Hell.
Wednesday marks the start of the main program with a heavy and uncompromising punch. Fortress Josefov will quake under the force of American sludge titans Mastodon, industrial legends Ministry and Static-X, and thrash metal icon Kerry King, who will make his Brutal Assault debut. Death metal fans can look forward to Dying Fetus and Blood Red Throne, while black metal rituals will be delivered by Rotting Christ and Ruïm.
Thursday will maintain the high tempo – French juggernauts Gojira return to Josefov, joined by '90s modern metal icons Fear Factory and Norwegian progressives Leprous. A triple dose of American death metal comes courtesy of Obituary, Suffocation, and Nile, while metalcore fans can brace for Fit For a King and August Burns Red. The day also includes a tribute to legendary band Bathory by the project Blood Fire Death.
Friday won’t give listeners a moment to catch their breath. On stage will be black metal pioneers Mayhem and symphonic heavyweights Dimmu Borgir. Modern metalcore will be represented by Landmvrks and Counterparts, post-metal melancholy by Cult of Luna and Harakiri for the Sky, and a gothic metal mass by Paradise Lost.
Saturday offers a fitting finale to the entire festival. Look forward to progressive death metal masters Opeth, brutal blasts from Brujeria and Benighted, and Australian prog-metal gem Karnivool. Old-school energy will be brought by hardcore legends Agnostic Front and thrashers Overkill, while modern melodic death metal will be served by Swedish project The Halo Effect.
The festival is also launching the sale of a limited number of single-day tickets! These are available for each day of the event – a perfect choice for those who can’t attend the whole week but still don’t want to miss out on the highlight of the metal summer. Single-day parking is also available.
Brutal Assault will take place in the Czech Republic at the Josefov Fortress during August 6-9, 2025.

70,000 Tons Of Metal 2024 (Day Two)
Day two of 70,000 Tons Of Metal was an early start, and by early, I mean around noon. The first bands of the day normally start playing around ten in the morning, but only the very hardcore or the still inebriated fans are having metal for breakfast. One of NWOBHM’s elite bands, Tygers of Pan Tang, was the first band on our list that day. They were good, but at this point of their career, they reminded me of your friend’s fathers band playing classic heavy metal at your local bar and grill. Next up was Nervosa. There have been so many line-up changes over the past couple of years, I wasn’t sure who was currently in the band other than Prika Amaral. There were some technical issues at the start of their set, but they were cruising along by their second song.

Tygers of Pan Tang
With our boat cruising through the Atlantic Ocean towards Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, it was time to enjoy some of the other things on the Freedom Of The Seas other than just metal. There are several restaurants on board the ship that are not included within the price of admission. You pay extra for these restaurants and you must make reservations right away because the spots are limited. My wife and I made reservations at the Izumi Hibachi (Japanese steakhouse) and at Chops Grill (steakhouse) on back-to-back nights.

Nervosa
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Windjammer Grill or the main dining room, but sometimes you just want to get away from it all and these restaurants are a good option and a not too terribly expensive option. There is also an Italian restaurant and a Johnny Rockets burger grill to choose from.
For late night eats, the standbys have always been Sorrento’s Pizza and the Promenade Café. However, the Windjammer is now offering late night eats from midnight until 4 am. This wasn’t available in 2020 and was much appreciated by the looks of all the metalheads filling up their plates to refuel in the middle of the night. More...
