Chaos in Tejas 2012 Day One
For some reason, Austin, Texas loves the good-time-party vibe of stoner rock and its sour faced, miserable brother, doom metal. These two related styles have a family reunion at SXSW, but the punk themed Chaos in Tejas is a less likely host. June 1st, the second day of Chaos in Tejas 2012, featured a doom metal dream lineup. Legends Saint Vitus took top bill, while Japan’s stoner-doom, serial killer fanatics Church of Misery made a rare North American appearance. Hail! Hornet, Magic Circles and The Gates of Slumber provided support. More...
The Gates Of Slumber Splits With Drummer
The Gates Of Slumber has announced that former drummer "Iron" Bob Fouts will sit behind the kit on the band's next U.S. tour. The band has parted amicably with J. Clyde Paradis, who recorded and toured behind last year's "The Wretch" (Rise Above Records). Fouts drummed for the band on previous releases "Conqueror" (2008) and "Hymns of Blood and Thunder" (2009), which both landed in Decibel Magazine's "Best Albums of the Year" lists.
Band founder Karl Simon (guitar / vocals) and longtime comrade-at-arms Jason McCash (bass / backing vocals) invited Fouts to fill-in for their upcoming tour with Hammers of Misfortune, which kicks off July 18th in Chicago. "We had a lot of good times together with Cool Clyde and created a massive album that will last the ages however now we are just personally headed in different directions," said Simon in a statement.
"I'm really stoked to hit the road again with our long time friend and former member Bob Fouts and I am really looking forward to see what tomorrow may bring!" added McCash.

Hail!Hornet Announces Headlining Shows
Southern metal supergroup Hail!Hornet has announced a short run of headlining tour dates in addition to the their two week U.S. tour with Church of Misery and The Gates of Slumber. The dates begin on June 11th in Denver, CO and wrap up on June 16th in Johnson City TN. The tour will feature direct support from The Gates of Slumber and will be the band’s second outing for latest album "Disperse The Curse."
Hail!Hornet is “Dixie” Dave Collins (Weedeater, Bongzilla) on bass, Erik Larson (Alabama Thunderpussy, Birds of Prey) on drums, Vince Burke (Beaten Back To Pure) on guitars, and T-roy Medlin (Sourvein) on vocals. The band released sophomore album, "Disperse The Curse," earlier this year on Relapse Records. The album can currently be streamed at this location.
Drummer Erik Larson commented on the upcoming tour: “All of us in H!H are super stoked to be touring with Church of Misery. T-Roy has spent time with them in Europe before so i'm sure there will be some reminiscing. Personally, the time I spent in Japan was the most eye opening experience I ever had, so I hope to repeat that experience for them here and show them how some grimey southerners get it done. Not to Mention we'll have The Gates of Slumber with as well to keep the smooth trail rolling...it's going to be a good time for sure. Hopefully Texas won't be too fucking hot, and melt the Japanese.”

Church Of Misery Announces U.S. Tour
Japanese act Church of Misery (not to be confused with the U.S. act of the same name) has announced a U.S. headlining tour that will kick off on May 24th in Providence, RI. Presented by Brooklyn Vegan, the two week trek will showcase one of metal's most bizarre and exotic bands and one that Rolling Stone called "a dynamic articulated hell, like the Tokyo-Blue-Cheer crush of Boris but grounded in the British white-blues nightmares of early Seventies Black Sabbath."
The tour will include special Church of Misery appearances in Austin (as part of the 2012 Chaos in Tejas Fest) and Baltimore (as part of the 2012 Maryland Deathfest). Formed in 1996 by bassist Tatsu Mikami and guitarist Tomohiro Nishimura, the Tokyo-based Church of Misery's formidable sound melds early-era Black Sabbath style doom with powerful psychedelic rock. Deepsend Records has issued the following announcement about re-releasing the "Suffer No Guilt" album from The Gates of Slumber:
"We're proud to announce the reissue of The Gates of Slumber's 'Suffer No Guilt' album. This reissue features the original album and artwork in a glorious 6-panel, matte finished digipak.
"The Gates of Slumber should be a household name to all lovers of true doom metal. To the uninitiated, their magnum sophomore album 'Suffer No Guilt' is the perfect place to start your journey. A brilliant mixture of Sabbath, Vitus, Pentagram, and prime era Celtic Frost. A genre-defining statement of true doom metal, 'Suffer No Guilt' is a testament to what metal can and should be if pillaged and conquered at will.
"Vintage currents of crushing doom pulsate through like a plunging sword from the mighty Conan himself. Experience the sensation of being epically elevated and sonically crushed."

The Gates Of Slumber Comments On New Album
The Gates of Slumber will unleash a fifth full-length album titled "The Wretch" on May 10th, 2011 via Rise Above Records / Metal Blade. The cover artwork is available here. The new song "Coven of Cain" is also still available for streaming through Decibel Magazine.
"This record is frustration and disappointment put to music," said The Gates of Slumber frontman and founding member Karl Simon. "No heroics this time, no swords; no sorcery. No fantasy. That stuff is OK; it's fun...whatever, but we don't feel it these days. This one is all about others let you down almost as much as you let yourself down.
