The work of JRR Tolkien has long been a favorite muse of rock and metal artists. This year's Bloodstock bands Megadeth, Amon Amarth, and Dimmu Borgir all have used Tolkien references in their work, along with many others (Nightwish, Gorgoroth and even the likes of Led Zeppelin to name but a few).
Now Bloodstock’s co-founder, fantasy artist Paul Raymond Gregory, is thrilled to bring the two themes together and launch a major art exhibition at Bloodstock this year.
Christened the Rock and Metal (RAM) Gallery, the exhibition is to be a permanent addition to the festival and will provide a showcase for a changing selection of rock-related art and memorabilia. Paul Raymond Gregory’s extensive body of work includes many famous album sleeves and monolithic pieces inspired by the writings of JRR Tolkien. Paul’s first ever album cover commission was in 1984 for Saxon’s "Crusader," so launching the RAM Gallery on the 30th anniversary of Paul’s artistic debut in the metal world is fitting indeed.
This year’s first showing will include all the original Bloodstock festival artwork, going right back to the first indoor event in 2001, plus a wide range of Paul’s album art including the sleeve of Saxon’s latest release "Sacrifice." Representing Paul’s Tolkien work, there will also be a large triptych inspired by The Silmarillion opus (from whence Marillion derived its name). The painting will be mounted in a bespoke hand-carved frame created by framer John Davis. Although John has framed much of Paul’s other work, the triptych features the first frame actually designed by Paul himself. In addition, Paul will be signing copies of his book "Beyond Time And Place," which showcases artwork from the breadth of his career.
The exhibition will also include a small selection of bespoke handmade guitars created by young artist/musician Cynosure who is working to re-define the guitar, not just as a functional instrument, but as a working, playable piece of art.
The current Bloodstock Festival 2014 lineup is shaping up as follows: More...

Century Media Records has issued the following announcement about re-issuing "Wolverine Blues" from Entombed:
"Where 'Left Hand Path' and 'Clandestine' helped define a genre and launch a sound, 'Wolverine Blues' was the foundation that Entombed laid down for a new style in extreme music altogether.
"Here we can hear the beginnings of what would be coined as Death & Roll. Forever influential and chock-full of that sought after guitar tone, 'Wolverine Blues' is a must-have for anyone who considers themselves a fan of underground music.
"This classic album has been re-envisioned, pressed on blood red wax with black marbling and spread across two 10" LPs, with side four being an etching of the now iconic Skull & Bones symbol. Inside the double gatefold jacket, there is also an array of bonus material, including: (1) the album lyrics, (2) a classic collage of photos from this era of Entombed, and (3) a collectible 20"x20" double-sided poster.
Original Entombed members Alex Hellid (guitar), Ulf "Uffe" Cederlund (guitar), and Nicke Andersson (drums) will rejoin forces to perform the band's classic second album, "Clandestine" (1991).
The event takes place on February 1st, 2014 at Gävle Konserthus in Gävle, Sweden. They will be backed by the 65-piece Gävle Symphonic Orchestra and a 40-piece choir. Comments Alex Hellid:
"We will be performing 'Clandestine' as arranged by Thomas Von Wachenfeldt and it will be the first time in 17 years that me, Uffe and Nicke play together again as Entombed."
Entombed, which was covered in our Sunday Old School series earlier this year, has inked a deal with Century Media. The label comments:
"We are happy to announce the signing of Swedish death metal legend Entombed!
"Their 10th studio album 'Back To The Front' will be out on October 28th in Europe and October 29th in North America and don’t be afraid that it will sound like Abba – it’s 666% true to the Entombed everybody loves.

Going through the Sunday Old School archives, it’s notable that most of the death metal we’ve covered tends to focus on American bands such as Obituary, Morbid Angel and Deicide, but the country that arguably has one of the most respected death metal scenes in the world, is the northern European country of Sweden, and one of their most notable contributions was Entombed. Entombed began life from the ashes of another acclaimed extreme metal group, Nihilist, who formed in the Swedish capital city of Stockholm in 1987 and quickly established themselves as one of the most important names in the then burgeoning death metal in Sweden. After bassist Johnny Hedlund left to form, Unleashed, the rest of the band carried on as Entombed and soon signed a deal with Earache Records, who had recently released such seminal works from Napalm Death, Carcass and Godflesh, through which they released their debut album, "Left Hand Path" in the spring of 1990.
The album was an instant favourite among the extreme metal crowd, and has gone on to be described as the blueprint for Swedish death metal, thanks primarily to the guitar tone used and is now regarded as one of the best death metal records in history. This tone was used once more on their sophomore album, "Clandestine," which again received rave reviews from the metal media and established the group as one of the most exciting, in a genre that was at the top of it’s game. "Clandestine" was also seen as more accessible than "Left Hand Path," and as a further step towards the unique Swedish take on death metal.
Despite receiving acclaim for their first two albums, Entombed took the surprising step of changing their sound somewhat, incorporating a more rock and roll vibe into their death metal roots, to create a genre known as "death and roll." This change in direction resulted in the 1993 album, "Wolverine Blues," which caused a rift between the band and Earache after the label agreed a deal with Marvel Comics to use images of their famous character of the same name, to help Entombed reach a broader audience, without consulting the band. This included featuring the Wolverine character on the front cover of the record, and even including a mini Wolverine comic inside the album. The Marvel version of "Wolverine Blues" was also heavily censored, going as far as to remove the song, "Out of Hand" completely. The album itself received a very mixed response, with some fans not to keen on the change in direction, while publications such as Guitar World hailed it as the best death metal album of the year.
