Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.

On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.

More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Man Pleads Guilty To Urinating On Metallica Fans

The Cape Cod Times has reported the following story about a former police officer urinating on fans at a Metallica concert:

In a plea deal, former Brewster police officer Joseph Houston pleaded guilty yesterday in Boston Municipal Court to several charges associated with his actions at a Metallica concert in January.

Houston was in court for two separate cases stemming from the Jan. 18 incident. He was scheduled for trial for trespassing because he re-entered TD Banknorth Garden after being thrown out of the concert by security personnel and MBTA Transit Police. He was also to be arraigned on assault and battery and a felony charge of open and gross lewdness.

According to a Brewster Police Department investigation, witnesses said Houston consumed a half-dozen beers at a bar before the concert. He then physically and verbally harassed a family that had traveled to Boston from out of state and were seated in the row in front of Houston and his brothers.

Houston pulled down his pants, exposed his penis and urinated on a man's shirt, seat and the floor beside him, according to what the family told police. With his penis still exposed, Houston lunged at the man's sister, according to the Brewster police investigation.

Yesterday, Houston agreed to admit to sufficient facts and a finding of guilty on the trespassing charge and the assault and battery charge, but he avoided the felony charge of open and gross lewdness and pleaded to a lesser charge of assault and indecent exposure.

Jason Newsted Talks Metallica HoF Induction

As previously reported, the Metallica guest list for the April 4 induction includes staffers from the band's previous labels, Megaforce and Elektra, journalists and photographers who have been supportive over the group's career, producers and musician friends.

It was also reported that Dave Mustaine would not be able to attend. However, what wasn't reported [here] are some vital details that Metallica Blog Magnetic reported: that Dave Mustaine will not be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the rest of the band, including all three bassists. Perhaps it goes without saying, but Jason Newsted cleared things up.

"There's three bass players getting inducted, and James, Lars and Kirk," former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted said. Former guitarist Dave Mustaine will not be inducted. "Its not my decision. I have nothing to do with that. It was decided by the band, and I think it was just a hard-and-fast rule… anyone who has recorded on any Metallica recordings that have been released to the public as an official release were invited to the induction. So, that's kind of that."

Ray Burton, father of Cliff Burton, who was Metallica's bassist from 1982 until his death in 1986, will accept on behalf of his son.

That excludes Ron McGovney from the three bassists as well, for those who were counting.

Newsted plans to perform with Metallica during the ceremony. For the first time in nine years, "the Black Album band will be back together and mow the shit down," as Jason Newsted puts it.

"I talked to Lars, and it's all good," Jason Newsted said. "I was happy to hear from him. I hadn't talked to him for a long time, so it was nice to hear his voice. It was basically as if no time had passed, as far as the conversation went. We picked up right where we left off. It was just absolutely positive. It was like, there we were, getting ready to get a beer some place. And Lars is ready to rock. He sounded like a kid again talking about the induction, and I felt pretty much like that, too. Getting fired up to rock after that many years… it's pretty special."

Metallica To Reunite w/ Newsted for HoF Induction

Billboard.com reports: Metallica is using its upcoming Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction to stage what drummer Lars Ulrich calls "a sort of family reunion."

"I don't think there's a better time to come together than when it's about celebration," Ulrich tells Billboard.com. "I think everybody is proud of their association (with Metallica), so we're reaching out to everybody who's been a part of this, both inside the band on and on the periphery of the band over the years. And there's a big group of people coming to Cleveland for the weekend, so I look forward to seeing a lot of people I haven't seen for a long time."

The Metallica guest list for the April 4 induction includes staffers from the band's previous labels, Megaforce and Elektra, journalists and photographers who have been supportive over the group's career, producers and musician friends. Metallica also invited founding guitarist Dave Mustaine, who is unable to attend, and former bassists Ron McGovney and Jason Newsted, who will. Newsted is also planning to perform with Metallica during the ceremony. Ray Burton, father of the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, will accept on behalf of his son.

Guitarist Kirk Hammett says Metallica was inspired to be all-inclusive after it witness Blondie's acrimonious induction during the 2006 Rock Hall ceremony. "There was so much politics and so much drama," Hammett recalls, "that we collectively said to each other that if that ever happens and we get inducted...we don't want any of that, because it kind of really puts a whole bad, sour note on the celebration itself. We said to each other, 'Let's celebrate the fact and let's not turn it into something negative."

Metallica Rocks SXSW As Volsung

Metallica Blog Magnetic has posted a firsthand account of Metallica's "secret" SXSW performance:

Metallica pulled out all the stops during their spectacular set at Austin's South by Southwest Festival. Metallica was a surprise guest; on SXSW's official schedule, they were listed as Volsung, a metal band from "Somewhere, Norway."

Droves of die-hard fans, catching wind of the rumors, lined up all day outside Stubb's, where Metallica 18-wheelers parked outside.

Just before 10pm — after sets by the Silversun Pickups and a bunch of dudes who played Metallica's "Fuel" on "Guitar Hero" — the stage lights dimmed, and the speakers began to rattle the famous instrumental intro. A steady cheer began to build through the capacity crowd (and outside Stubb's, too, where hundreds of badge-less Metallica fans watched from a nearby parking garage), growing with intensity with each orchestral swell. It eventually reached a full roar, and then, lo and behold, the music stopped and there they were — Metallica, in the flesh.

Shortly after the band took the stage, frontman James Hetfield shouted "Surprise!," sarcastically referring to the not-so-well-kept secret that the band would be performing at the Guitar Hero Metallica party, celebrating the launch of their version of the popular video game next week.

"We're a young band from Norway and we want to get signed," Metallica frontman James Hetfield told the audience at the heavy metal band's SXSW performance. "This is the best kept secret in rock and roll. We thought we'd come join you for your party." James Hetfield of Metallica told a sweaty crowd of 2,000 or so at Stubb's. "Is that all right?" The roar came back affirmative.

"James here, alive, at about 80% but getting better. I want to say sorry for missing the second Stockholm gig on Sunday due to illness. The cause/diagnosis at the hospital was narrowed down to either a 24 hr virus or a bad oyster...yes, hate to admit, an oyster could have taken me down.

"I acknowledge and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused fans who had travelled near and far for the show. I had done everything possible to make it, and was at the point of falling if I stood up. On a lighter note since my illness, the support band 'Swedish Oyster Cult' will be thrown off the tour.
