Pit Stories: The Drunk Drummer Gets Home Aloned

Every time the glory of New Release Tuesday rolls around we also share show stories provided by metal bands from across the globe.

Usually these stories take place right in the pit, but sometimes the shenanigans metal musicians get into aren't constrained to the performance itself. This week Raven shares a tale of accidentally Home Alone-ing the band's drummer at the Wacken festival:

In 1997 we started a European tour with Tank & Hammefall as opening bands. The 1st show was the Wacken festival (which was a good bit smaller in those days). All 3 bands were travelling on one bus...

So, in Hamburg we picked up the backline at some crazy warehouse. Joe went to the bathroom and since no one did a head count.... the guy locked up the place and the bus left without him! We did not notice for about 30 mins, and freaked! Meanwhile Joe is smashing shit up trying to reach someone – the guy finally heard him before he left... and stuck him in a cab (about 400 euro) along with a bottle of whisky!

So our very drunk drummer turned up just in time for a 10 hour fight with the organizers who wanted us to play in this tent while our opening bands played the main stage....but that's another story...

Raven's new album "ExtermiNation" (reviewed here) is set for release on April 27th (Europe) and April 28th (USA) via SPV/Steamhammer Records. Check out a clip taken from the release below. More...

Boss Kong Announces Record Store Day Release

Magic Bullet Records just released the following statement about an upcoming album from Boss Kong:

"Exactly what is, or who are, the back-alley primates that created this beastly outfit known as Boss Kong you may ask? And the answer is: don't write a check your ass can't cash, Jack. Go ahead and dig around if you have some kind of desire to get jacked-up in the end, or if you're in Columbo's bloodline of trenchcoat wizardy, but otherwise, I'd just take it for what it is and go about your goddamn business.

"That said, bio fodder be damned, as these tunes speak for themselves, and all are invited to get slaughterhouse crunked-up and blaze the latest from the Boss Kong pact on the latest excursion into a demented rendition of the past.

"As a crossover/tie-in with the brand new Image Comics series 'The Humans,' Magic Bullet Records is proud to present 'The Humans Soundtrack Vol. II' by Boss Kong. Set in the late 1960s/early '70s, 'The Humans' is a book about an all-simian biker gang from Bakersfield, California, drinking, fighting, and fucking their way through the turbulent world around them.

"Boss Kong is one of the book's more popular, interesting characters and this installment of the soundtrack series tells tales from the perspective of an ape that's seen inhumanities both abroad and on the home front. Voiced by a mystery metal figurehead and performed by a cast of mystery stoner rockers, part of the fun of this 7" is trying to figure out who's behind the music itself. Once revisiting the glory days, two new hash-pipe nightmare rocker jams await, spreading the rampaging demoralization of the Tet Offensive onto coked-up mullet debauchery on 'The Humans Soundtrack Volume II,' like Ponyboy Curtis ten years after he went from gold to crushed Milwaukee aluminum, now leading the outcasts from the Planet Of The Apes into full-on bar-brawl burnout turf of the metal underworld. Deez Nuts Posts Music Video

Following the "Face This On My Own" video (still available here), Deez Nuts just released the "What I Gotta Do" music video, which is the third track to be released from forthcoming album "Word Is Bond."

JJ Peters comments about the track and video: "I'm really excited to release 'What I Gotta Do' - it's by far the furthest we've stepped out of our comfort zone, but still somehow sounds 110% DN. I can't wait for the world to hear it and I'm very curious to hear what y'all's vibe on it is.

"We have actively avoided doing a 'party' clip like the plague in the past as it seemed way too obvious for us, but with 'What I Gotta Do' being the furthest thing from a party song vocally and lyrically, the juxtaposition of the frenzied party vibe video along with the track makes for a damn near sensory overload. If by watching it you have a thousandth of the fun we had making it, you'll have a hangover."

Nightrage Stares Into Infinity

Greek/Swedish melodic death metal band Nightrage has teamed up with Revolver Magazine to launch a music video for the new track "Stare into Infinity." Check it out below.

The song comes from the band's upcoming sixth studio album, "The Puritan," set to release on April 24th through Despotz Records.

"'Stare into Infinity' is one of my favorite songs on our new album The Puritan," guitarist Marios Iliopoulos told Revolver. "It has all those elements that are Nightrage - heavy riffs, emotional melodies and brutal vocal hooks. The whole arrangement of the song is very simplistic and in your face. The verses are very thrashy with straightforward riffs and pounding drums, creating that feeling of power and metal mayhem. The chorus is where the song really lifts up with those signature Nightrage melodic guitars and big '80s metal riffs played with a thrashy and more modern approach. And Ronnie´s vocals, singing with such a great passion and old school melodic death metal vibes, makes for a really cool contrast on that part.

"Lyrically, it´s a song that has to do with leading you out of dark times, reaching the light at the end of the tunnel and leaving everything that's troubling you behind - searching to find your inner self.

"The production and sound that Daniel Bergstrand and George Neranzis did for the song made all the difference in the world; they really gave the song the needed power and loudness to create such a strong and beautifully loud brutal/melodic sound."

New album "The Puritan" can be pre-ordered online through the Desptoz web-store at this location. More...

Max Portnoy's Band Releasing Debut Album

Teen prodigy progressive band Next To None announces its signing today to InsideOut and the imminent release of debut album, "A Light in the Dark." Prior to the album's release, the band will be opening shows for English labelmates Haken on a U.S. tour.

Based in Pennsylvania, Next To None features Max Portnoy on drums, Ryland Holland on guitar, Kris Rank on bass, and Thomas Cuce on keyboards and lead vocals. The band has been honing its craft for several years, recording a self-released EP and playing various live gigs, including a slot at the Progressive Nation At Sea 2014 cruise. Later that year, the band went into the studio to record this debut album.

At the ripe young ages of 15 and 16, they emerged with an album they and producer Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic, Flying Colors, ex-Dream Theater) are extremely proud of. "A Light in the Dark" also features guest appearances by Bumblefoot (Guns N Roses) and Neal Morse.

Drummer Max Portnoy says, "It's so exciting to be signing with InsideOut...the home of the greatest prog bands in the world! We are honored to be part of the family."

Says producer Mike Portnoy, "Producing the Next To None album was like a trip back in time for me. I couldn't help but be reminded of recording my very first album with Dream Theater back in 1988. These boys have talent and maturity way beyond their years. It's obvious in their playing abilities, but I was most impressed with their writing and creative abilities. Six of the songs spread across the album tie together to create a conceptual piece...for a group of 15 & 16-year-olds to be thinking in big master strokes like that is absolutely incredible. They are doing things musically and thematically as teenagers that I wasn't exploring until I was in my mid twenties and thirties!

"I must point out that THEY wrote all of the music and performed all of their instruments on the album. I do not want people to think that my role as producer had anything to do with those areas...it is all THEM! My main role was to help them explore the studio for the first time and help them learn the ropes in that department. I couldn't be prouder of this album and think that Next To None represents the next generation of progressive metal." More...

GWAR Responds To Lawsuit

Style Weekly recently reported that William Brockie, father of GWAR member Dave Brockie who passed away last year, is suing the band over Dave's remains. GWAR has now issued this statement about the situation:

"We have not yet seen the actual lawsuit papers, and thus cannot comment on the substance of the lawsuit brought against GWAR by Dave Brockie's father, William Brockie, but we can say that the claims in the Style Weekly article are false. We did not steal Dave Brockie's ashes, or anything else that belonged to him. In fact, all of the items mentioned in the article, including Dave's ashes have been available to his attorneys for weeks. At all times, and under very trying circumstances, we have acted in good faith to honor the wishes of our dear friend. Dave left no will or instructions for final arrangements, and so we have done the best we could to honor what we believe Dave Brockie would have wanted.

"The accusation concerning Dave's ashes is particularly troubling for us. Following Dave's passing, the first thing we did was notify his father, who signed over Dave's body so we could have him cremated. We were told by Dave's father that he did not want to be involved in making Dave's final arrangements. For this reason, Slave Pit assumed that responsibility, paying for his cremation, arranging two memorial services (one public and one private), and purchasing a plot for Dave in Richmond's famed Hollywood Cemetery. Dave's father did not attend either of the services held for his son in Richmond.

"Over 30 years of working and living with Dave, several of us had heard him say that he wished for his ashes to be kept at Slave Pit, so he could 'keep an eye on GWAR' while we worked. In the weeks following his death, we developed a plan for a memorial fund that would raise money to honor Dave's memory with a statue in Hollywood Cemetery and work to continue his passionate support of the arts. We felt strongly that a portion of his remains should live at the site of his proposed monument in Hollywood Cemetery. When William Brockie later approached us, we released a portion of the ashes at his request, so he could spread them in the location where Dave's brother and mother's ashes were dispersed. More...
