Graspop Metal Meeting: Day One

The Graspop Metal Meeting festival, held annually in the small Belgian town of Dessel, has become one of the highlights of the metal calendar, along with such festivals as Wacken Open Air and Hellfest and this year, the event proved how successful it is by celebrating it's twentieth edition. It was certainly a special way to mark the occassion, booking a number of bands who had never played the festival before but who fans had been clamouring to see. It has always traditionally catered to head bangers of all ages, bringing in bands from the early days of metal to the stars of today, as well as up and comers. Before we go any further, it should be noted that due to scheduling conflicts, some big names either will not be covered in this review, or only mentioned briefly, so don't be disappointed if your favourite band doesn't get the treatment you want, if at all. So, with all that said, just how good can a metal festival in the Flemish region be? Read on, MacDuff.

Arriving on the Thursday, the camp site seemed to be smoother than ever to get in to than previous years. Whether this is because the staff have further improved the planning of the grounds, metal heads have become friendlier over the past four years, or because I've been put on medication since my last visit, we'll never know. Anyway, the general atmosphere at Graspop was, as per usual, a very relaxed one, with people from all over the world coming to listen to and celebrate the music they love so dearly. There are some bands performing on this day too, mostly cover acts such as The Art of Pantera and Diolegacy. It's a good way to get introduced to the festival grounds, get some tokens (imagine Disney money but with skulls on,) and familiarise yourself with the stages, food stalls and the cafe, which is more of a pub with Warlock on full blast.

On to the most important thing however, the music. Kicking off the main stage, or rather, the second main stage as the festival now has two, was hard rock supergroup, The Dead Daisies. The band features a collective of solid names such as Marco Mendoza, Dizzy Reed and former Motley Crue vocalist, John Corabi. Looking at the bands on the members resume such as Guns N Roses, Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake, their good time, hard rocking sound was pretty much what one would expect. This does not, however, stop them from doing their job of getting people on their feet, putting smiles on faces and generally bringing a great vibe to the event that is so vital in making sure a festival gets off to a good start. They're not just a party act either, they've got some genuinly good songs and a number of people seemed to be a little surprised how much they enjoyed the set. Bottom line: If you want to party like it's 1985, go see the Dead Daisies. You'll be glad you did. More...

Texas Independence Fest Day 3: Cavalera Conspiracy

Day three of Texas Independence was the day I looked forward to the most. The headliners included Corrosion of Conformity-Blind, Death Angel and Cavalera Conspiracy.

This day was by far the most stacked for talent. Bands as well known as Allegaeon played early in the day. I didn’t make it to the club until 2:30. The Agonist was the first band I caught. I wasn’t able to see the band with Alissa White-Gluz before she left for Arch Enemy, so it’s difficult to compare her to her replacement Vicky Psarakis. Psarakis’s vocals seemed fine, but she appeared to have lost the monitor. Her band mates were in fine form, though.

Cavalera Conspiracy Issues Album Update

Cavalera Conspiracy, the band featuring legendary metal brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, is in the final stages of working on a third album (and first for new label home Napalm Records).

The band is working with producer John Gray (Soulfly) and plans on having the record ready for release in Fall of 2014. Frontman Max Cavalera checked in from the studio to give an update.

On working with his brother: "It has always been some kind of killer magic whenever I play with my brother. We have a special connection that comes out through the music and the crowd reacts to it in an insane way."

On the recording process: "Pretty much I have to get into Cavalera Conspiracy mode. I wanted the new album to be faster and thrashier with the concept of Old Babylon. As far as recording equipment, we use everything! We don't rely too much on Pro Tools like other bands. All Iggor's tracks are live drums. The energy is all there and we play all the guitars and sing of top of it, so in a way, it's like the old ways of recording."

On feelings of pressure regarding the band's third album: "There's pressure but I also like the challenge. I think it is the Cavalera Conspiracy's most and intense and fastest record yet. I am very proud of it."

More updates and news on the band's new album will be released in the coming weeks.

Cavalera Conspiracy Issues Album Update

Cavalera Conspiracy - the band featuring metal brothers Max and Igor Cavalera - is currently in the mixing stage for a third album and the band's first for new label home Napalm Records.

The band is working with producer John Gray (Soulfly) and plans on having the record ready for release in Fall of 2014. Members of the band and producer John Gray took some time to give an update on the recording process. Gray comments:

"This is by far the fastest and heaviest record I have ever had the pleasure of working on with Max Cavalera. Max, Igor and Marc were on the same page musically from the moment they walked in the door, and recording this album was a very smooth process. I had never worked with Igor Cavalera before and I was very impressed with his ability to work out the arrangements with Max and get some extremely complex drum parts done live with hardly any re-takes necessary.

"Marc Rizzo, as always, was spot-on and a true guitar virtuoso. I love to work with Marc because he always pushes himself to perfection, but he is very down to earth and keeps things light when he's under pressure. What can I say about Nate Newton- he killed it on the bass tracks with very little back and forth. I'm really impressed with his talent, and I look forward to meeting him someday." More...

Max Cavalera Talks Highlights Of 2012

Roadrunner Records asked a variety of the label's artists to fill out a brief survey explaining the highlights of their year.

Exceprts from Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera's responses can be found below (or read the full interview right here).

Best show you played: Soulfly live in Sao Paulo. The show was put together by fans. They demanded to see Soulfly live and the energy in the building was unbelievable. They sang every song so loud and I had my son, Zyon, playing drums and he stage dived into the crowd at the end of the show. What a great night!

Favorite song of 2012: Deftones, "Poltergeist," from their new album. Wicked!

Graspop Metal Meeting: Day Three

After the grey and miserable weather the day before, it was nice to awake on the final day of Graspop and be greeted with plenty of sunshine. While that may not have been the most metal sentence I have ever written, the roster of bands on display may well have been the most extreme of the weekend.

Like the previous day, we wasted a little time in the campsite before heading into the main area to catch the second main stage band, in today's case, Canadian heavy metal heroes, Anvil. Of course, everyone knows the story of Anvil by now, and perhaps that's made this set such a special one. From the opening guitar shrieks of "March Of The Crabs/666" there were smiles all around, not least from frontman Steve "Lips" Kudrow. The fact that everyone could see how much fun the band were having made the fans enjoy it all the more, which I'm sure in turn only fueled the smiles on the faces of Anvil. It might seem a strange word to use to describe a performance from a metal band, but Anvil are a really fun live experience. It's impossible to watch them and not headbang or raise the horns. Kudrow's interaction with the crowd is simply great, not least because he doesn't patronise the audience with cliche lines like "Are you ready to party?" I was also impressed by his ability to perform his guitar duties flawlessly, while still singing. Drummer Rob Reiner and bassist Glenn Five also deserve alot of credit, as their skills were on full display today, particularly Reiner's during, "White Rhino." Having only a fairly short set, only three songs from the group's new album, "Juggernaut Of Justice" were performed today, namely the title track, "On Fire" and "New Orleans Voodoo," but they all went down well with the crowd, who did their best to sing along to the latter. Another highlight came during Kudrow's guitar solo, which he did by playing his axe with a vibrator. An unorthodox method, but effective. As one might expect, they closed their set with the anthemic, "Metal On Metal," which went down a treat for all viewing. While they may not be the greatest heavy metal band to ever grace the Earth, they might well be one of the most enjoyable and were a great way to start the day.

It was then over to Marquee 2 for a little crossover thrash from D.R.I. (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles.) There were plenty of old school thrashers in attendance for them, complete with upturned caps and white shoes, and they all seemed to enjoy what they were witnessing. As much as I've always liked the band and crossover in general, I found watching them for as long as I did to be a little much, as most songs follow a similar formula, resulting in the performance getting a little boring after a short while. It seems I was not alone in this opinion, as there were plenty who came in to watch, then left after a couple of songs. D.R.I. are, like Anvil, all about having fun, but they don't possess the same stage presence. Songs like "Snap/I'd Rather Be Sleeping" and "Asleep At The Wheel" are always good to hear, but they felt rather tame today. Perhaps it would be better to catch them in a small club setting, because they weren't able to make it work in the Marquee. More...

Lazarus A.D. Kicks Max Cavalera’s Ass in Chicago

This is the story of why I left a metal show early for the first time in my life.

While I’m not a serial show-goer, I have easily been to dozens, if not over a hundred, metal shows since my metal-loving life got going back in the mid-1990s, and I have always had a rule that I followed more closely than the ins and outs of “Debbie Does Dallas” – don’t leave early. Even if I was tired, drunk, pissed or the band(s) sucked, I stayed until the house lights came on and the roadies started taking the drum kit apart. Well, tonight, I broke that rule. Why?
