Ross The Boss Passes Away Aged 72
Ross Friedman, better known to fans of metal and punk rock as Ross The Boss, has sadly died at the age of seventy two. The guitarist announced last month that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and unfortunately succumbed to his illness yesterday. The news was broken by the Metal Hall Of Fame, who posted the following statement:
"It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of legendary guitarist, our dear friend, Metal Hall of Fame Inductee, and Global Metal Ambassador Ross “The Boss” Friedman.
"Ross was a pioneering force in both punk and heavy metal, best known as a founding member of The Dictators and Manowar. His powerful playing, unmistakable tone, and uncompromising spirit helped shape generations of musicians and fans around the world.
"Earlier this year, Ross publicly shared his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), facing it with the same courage and honesty that defined his life and career.
"Ross’s impact on music is immeasurable. From the raw energy of early punk to the epic scale of heavy metal, his work left a lasting mark on the genre and on everyone who experienced it.
"Beyond his achievements on stage and in the studio, Ross was deeply respected by his peers and beloved by fans across continents. His legacy will live on through his music, his influence, and the countless lives he touched.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, bandmates, and fans worldwide during this difficult time. Further details will be shared as they become available."
Friedman initially found fame as a member of the punk rock band The Dictators, who released their debut album, "The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!" in 1975. He would also perform with Shakin' Street, with whom he was supporting Black Sabbath when he met bassist Joey DeMaio in 1980. The two would join forces to form Manowar and would release six albums before DeMaio fired the guitarist. Ross would eventually rejoin The Dictators and perform with such bands as The Hellacopters and Manitoba's Wild Kingdom, before launching a solo career.

Pit Stories: Napping In The Bass Bin
Every week we chat up musicians from throughout the heavy music scene to get their favorite Pit Stories from the mayhem of metal shows.
Today David Defeis of Virgin Steele shares the following tale of a fan who found a rather odd place to take a nap:
Virgine Steele played a place in Staten Island called The Paramount Theatre a couple of times with Manowar. On this one particular evening, during our set I noticed that a kid had passed out inside the bass bin of one of the PA stacks. I asked security to check on him, they said they would, and I assumed that they did and I went about my night doing all the things that one has to do at a gig.
When I finally had a moment to catch a view of the stage once again, somewhere near the end of Manowar's set, I noticed that this same kid was still passed out in the bass bin. I don’t know what happened to him, his hearing or his reproductive capacity… but it could not have been a terribly good thing for him to have been held in the grip of that sonic onslaught for all those hours from 2 very loud groups!
Virgin Steele is gearing up to release "Nocturnes of Hellfire & Damnation" on June 22nd in Europe and June 23rd in the USA via SPV/Steamhammer. Check out the lyric video for "Lucifer's Hammer" below. More info on the album can be found at this location. More...
