Today, heavy metal and rock and roll has lost one of it's greatest icons. Motorhead frontman Ian Fraser Kilmister, better known to the world as Lemmy, has passed away, just days after celebrating his seventieth birthday. A message from the official Motorhead Facebook page reads as follows:

"There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it’s way down the street, with his family.

"We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words.

"We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD.Have a drink or few.Share stories.
"Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.

"HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT.

"Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister
1945 -2015
Born to lose, lived to win."

Lemmy was born on Christmas Eve 1945 in Stoke on Trent in Staffordshire, England, later growing up in Wales. He first took to the big stages as a roadie for such names as Jimi Hendrix and went on to find success with The Rocking Vicars and Hawkwind, before he was fired and went on to form the band which revitalized rock music and were perhaps more influential in heavy metal than any other, Motorhead. The band released twenty two studio albums in addition to numerous live and compilation albums. He released his autobiography, "White Line Fever" in 2003. In a tragic coincidence, his passing follows on one month from the death of former Motorhead drummer, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor.

Tributes have already begun pouring in for the singing bassist, with a post from Ozzy Obsourne's Twitter feed reading: "Lost one of my best friends, Lemmy, today. He will be sadly missed. He was a warrior and a legend. I will see you on the other side."

Ozzy's wife, Sharon, also Tweeted: "My dear friend, Lemmy, passed away today. I’ve known him for 38 years. He will be so missed but he will never be forgotten."

Sepultura were amongst the many bands to pay tribute collectively, saying, "Today, we were caught by surprise with the death of the incomparable Lemmy Kilmister. Dancing On Your Grave was the song which inspired us in the choice of our name, Sepultura (grave in Portuguese). In an official statement, the band asks the fans to "play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD." We hear and we obey, master! Thank you for everything! R.I.P."

Metallica also chimed in, saying: "Lemmy, you are one of the primary reasons this band exists. We are forever grateful for all of your inspiration. Rest In Peace." While fellow metal titans Judas Priest posted: "Words about Lemmy can never be enough so we will simply say farewell Lord Lemmy thank you for the music, the shows, the tours we did and the laughs and stories we shared - all of these and more will be cherished."

DJ Eddie Trunk appeared to break the news first, Tweeting: "Sorry to report that I have confirmed Lemmy has passed away just now at the age of 70. RIP to a true original icon of rock."

WWE wrestler Triple H, whose theme song, "The Game," was penned by Lemmy and performed by Motorhead, also paid tribute saying: "Sorry to report that I have confirmed Lemmy has passed away just now at the age of 70. RIP to a true original icon of rock."

RIP to a true Heavy Metal icon. Today is a day of sadness, but also one of fond remembrance. We all shall be reminded of his no compromise attitude in each and every Motorhead song.
God bless you Lemmy and may all your family, friends and fans be comforted with the knowledge that you lived a long life and lived it to the fullest.

Eloquence, intelligence and humour were as much a part of Lemmy as were his uncompromised views of life and music. His wisdom, as well as Motorhead's music, will endure. Lemmy is Dead, Long Live Lemmy! RIP.
