The Final Day Of Mystic Festival Was Bittersweet

The day I was dreading had arrived, that day being the last day of Mystic Festival 2025. Another bummer was that there was more rain today. Lots of it. It’s an expected risk and there’s nothing you can do about it other than soak it all in, literally. Rain jackets and ponchos were ever-present today and if you were one of those that thought you could hold out not wearing rain gear during the first 3 days of the festival, today was your true test.

Fortunately for me the first band on my must-see list was going to be indoors. When I arrived, the stink of humidity permeating the venue but that would be a distant memory once Death Angel tore into “Mistress of Pain” from their debut album, “The Ultra Violence.” That surprised me because that last few times I’ve seen Death Angel, they rarely play material from their early releases. When the second song turned out to be “Voracious Souls,” my mind was blown. This is how you win back your OG fans Death Angel! Bravo!

Death Angel
Death Angel

Because Polish death metal legends Vader was starting only fifteen minutes after Death Angel’s set began, I could only stay around the halfway point of “Voracious Souls.” The rain was falling steadily by the time I exited the venue. Between dodging crisscrossing poncho clad metalheads, random rain puddles and putting on my own rain jacket, I made it just in time for Vader’s first song. When I arrived, all the photographers were told that we would have to wait until the start of Vader’s second song to enter the photo pit because Vader was going to deploy a ton of pyro during their opening song.

This Vader set was going to be special. They were going to play the whole “Litany” album. The album released in 2000 and was recorded right here in Gdansk. It garnered massive acclaim throughout the metal cosmos and death metal circles. The crowd that gathered for this special set was massive. I’ll do my best to give you a visual. The Park Stage area is about 50 yards long and then it butts against a circle of food trucks. When this stage area gets packed, the crowd spills out into the asphalt roadway that in turn is the main artery walkway for the festival. During Vader’s set, that walkway was jam packed with onlookers. It was practically impossible to navigate in either direction if you wanted to go to the Main Stage area or the Desert and Shrine stages.

As the final notes of the opening song “Wings” faded out, we were allowed to enter the soggy mud laden pit area. The first thing I noticed was the fans standing on the other side of the security barriers. These were the hardcore fans. There were numerous Vader logo adorned banners draped over the barriers and one of front row fans had a giant Vader band logo tattooed over his whole back. I grabbed a shot of this and you can see it in Day 3 photo gallery HERE.

Between the rain, Vader’s unforgiving playing, the overzealous crowd energy and copious amount of fire pot blasts, it felt like I was in a war zone and I loved every second of it. Most of the press at Mystic Festival are from Poland, so to say there wasn’t much room to move about the photo pit was an understatement. In addition to playing the whole “Litany” album, Vader played several more songs and closed their fantastic set with “The Imperial March” of Star Wars fame.

Vader
Piotr Wiwczarek of Vader

After a wild (an understatement) Vader set, I was looking forward to something a little more subdued. I know what you’re thinking, what is subdued at a metal festival?, Well, that would be Apocalyptica. The rain was still drizzling, but at least it wasn’t heavy. This was going to be another 15-minute turnaround set. I could only stay for about a song or so before I had to run across festival grounds to catch Pentagram. Apocalyptica opened their set with Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning” and that was all I was able to see since that song is over six minutes long. It was going to take me at least 7 minutes to get to the Desert Stage. The minutes math didn’t have much wiggle room.

Apocalyptica
Apocalyptica

This was my second time seeing Apocalyptica live and I was a lot closer this time so I could really see all the intricacies of their playing. It’s quite impressive how three cellos and a drummer can layer and mix so many complex melodies without stepping on each other. I made it to right around the dual guitar solo part of the song and then I had to haul ass (See professional journalism nomenclature) to the distant Desert Stage.

Bobby Liebling, the frontman of the historic doom metal band Pentagram, just about broke the internet earlier this year. A video surfaced showcasing his trademark death stare and his wispy white hair billowing like a geriatric lion’s mane on a windblown plain. The video went massively viral on social media platforms such as TikTok and Reddit which in turn caused renewed interest in the Black Sabbath doom inspired band that reached the apex of its popularity during the 1970’s.

Fast forward to 2011, a biopic titled “Last Days Here” showcased Bobby Liebling’s struggles with drug addiction. The indie film garnered a lot of attention and renewed some interest in the mostly forgotten doom legends. More doom and gloom would fall upon Pentagram. In 2017, Bobby Liebling was arrested for "abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult custodian” and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Most everyone thought that this was the end of the road for Bobby and Pentagram until “the video” surfaced and spread like a pandemic through the metal interwebs and obviously caught the attention of several festival and concert organizers. That brings us to the current moment where I was arriving just in time for Pentagram’s second only appearance in Poland and their first time at Mystic Festival. More...

Pentagram To Release New Album In January 2025

American doom metal pioneers Pentagram has announced a brand new studio album, entitled "Lightning In A Bottle." The record is scheduled to be released through Heavy Psych Sounds on January 31st. In anticipation of the release, the band has released a new song, "Thundercrest," which premiered earlier today at Metal Sucks.

The band states: "This is our brand new single after long years. It's called 'Thundercrest' and it follows in the intensity and heavyness our passion to play heavy music. We hope that the song gives you the intensity like driving straight through a brick wall."

The 10th Pentagram album sees founding frontman and doom figurehead Bobby Liebling leading a new cast of players that includes guitarist/producer Tony Reed (Mos Generator, Big Scenic Nowhere, etc.), drummer Henry Vasquez (Legions of Doom, Saint Vitus, Blood of the Sun, etc.) and bassist Scooter Haslip (Mos Generator, Saltine). It would be hard to overstate the energy the new band brings to songs like "Live Again," "Solve The Puzzle" or "In The Panic Room," but Lightning in a Bottle is unmistakably a Pentagram record, of course in Liebling’s unremittingly charismatic performance and the groove conjured to back it.

Recorded with Reed at the helm, Lightning in a Bottle recalls the best of what has allowed Pentagram to cast an influence across decades and generations of musicians, bands, and worshippers of Riff, and as just their third studio release in the last 15 years, it’s not a moment to neglect as they dig into a cut like "Dull Pain" or "Lady Heroin," the latter of which is a naked reconciliation on the part of Liebling with a lifelong addiction to opiates that’s become an inextricable part of the Pentagram story. As he wonders in the lyrics, “Lady Heroin, have I seen the last of you?” it becomes difficult to know whether the separation would be through sobriety or death, and that ambiguity becomes part of what makes the song so striking.

It’s not all brooding, even if it is doom. "Thundercrest" is brash and the nodding title-track brings to mind past glories without actually reliving them. The central message, any way you want to look at it, is that no matter how much the band has been through over the last half-century-plus, they remain a singular force. "Lightning In A Bottle" might not be the first Pentagram reboot, but it brings fresh ideas and dynamic to one of doom’s most classic, formative acts, and as soon as you hit play, the band absolutely own the moment of their own making.

Tracklisting:

1. Live Again
2. In The Panic Room
3. I Spoke To Death
4. Dull Pain
5. Lady Heroin
6. I'll Certainly See You In Hell
7. Thundercrest
8. Solve The Puzzle
9. Spread Your Wings
10. Lightning In A Bottle
11. Walk The Sociopath
12. Start The End (Digipak and deluxe edition bonus track)
13. Might Just Wanna Be Your Fool (Digipak and deluxe edition bonus track)

As I Lay Dying Show Cancelled After Uproar

Memphis, Tennessee based venue Growlers has announced that they have decided to cancel an upcoming concert by the reactivated As I Lay Dying, after a number of patrons, friends and local acts spoke out against the band's vocalist Tim Lambesis, who previously was incarcerated for attempting to arrange the murder of his wife. A statement from the venue reads:

"After hearing the combined voice of disheartened friends, local bands, and patrons, locally owned concert venue and bar, Growlers, has cancelled their scheduled show with As I Lay Dying, previously set for April 5th, and will replace it with a local show to benefit victims of domestic violence. Growlers has also canceled a show with the band Pentagram, previously set for March 24th.

"In 2014, Tim Lambesis, singer of metal band As I Lay Dying, was sentenced to up to six years in prison after being convicted of hiring someone to kill his wife. While the plot never unfolded, Lambesis spent the next two years of his life incarcerated. Just a couple of years later, and he’s back on stage, but with a remorseful attitude.

"From Lambesis, "I stand against who I became in my past… People who support AILD are not supporting the person I once was, because part of my life’s work is to undo the hurt I’ve caused. I will never be able to undo my greatest mistake, but I believe it’s better to do something rather than give up. AILD collectively condemns all forms of domestic abuse and violence. Our mission is to continually seek and implement ways to facilitate positive, meaningful change in the world around us."

"However, not everyone was ready to give Lambesis a second chance, and Growlers has created controversy in Memphis for booking his band in Memphis.

"While we believe in the justice system and the ability for rehabilitation, we are against domestic violence and will always listen to those that have gone through the pain that it has caused. Since As I Lay Dying returned to performing we’d had several requests to bring them to Memphis, despite the singer’s past. When the show was first announced, hundreds of people bought tickets right away. However, we’ve since heard the input of several people in the local community that we have the utmost respect for, and we want them to know that their voices are heard. Growler’s vehemently denounces all forms of physical and mental domestic abuse, and we’ll be replacing the As I Lay Dying show with a benefit show featuring all local bands. 100% of the proceeds will go to helping local victims of domestic abuse.”

"As a locally owned small business, supporting our community is the single most
important thing to us. In this instance, we’ve heard the community loud and clear, and we are going to do everything we can to ensure that we continue forward in providing an enjoyable entertaining environment that all of our patrons feel comfortable in. And to the people who's comments were erased we sincerely apologize, just know we stand with you."

Pentagram's touring plans have also been met with controversy following the release of frontman Bobby Liebling from Montgomery County Detention Center, where he was serving an eighteen month sentence after pleading guilty to "abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult custodian," who is believed to have been his elderly mother.

Pentagram Frontman Jailed For 18 Months

Bobby Liebling, frontman and sole constant member of American doom metal pioneers Pentagram, has been sentenced by a court in Maryland to spend eighteen months in prison for abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult, upon completion of which, he will be placed on supervised probation for three years. He was arrested in May for his actions and also charged with first degree assault, to which he pleaded not guilty, though he plead guilty to the charge of abuse/neglect of a vulnerable adult, which is believed to be his 87 year old mother. A statement from Pentagram bassist Greg Turley reads as follows:

"2015/2016 were the busiest years ever for Pentagram. New album and a full tour cycle kept us busier than ever and taking us to places we’ve never been and playing bigger shows than I ever imagined. November 2016, Gothenburg, Sweden I knew something was ending, I just didn't know what.... Dealing with Bobby and his reoccurring demons was bringing us all down. Same story from the past, I know. Honestly, I thought Bobby would end up dying before we played another show. Turns out, he didn’t die, just went off the rails and ended up assaulting his mom. Pretty much the worse thing someone could do in my opinion. He assaults the one and only person that has always taken up for him? Wow! Just horrible.

"He’s now serving time in prison. Looks like he’ll be there for the next 18 months. That’s a lot of time to reflect on bad decisions and bad habits.

"The last six months have been quite a ride, continuing on without Bobby was an easy decision. Fans, investments and commitments all needed to be satisfied so we marched on. The positive support we received, especially from those who have attended the live shows has been truly amazing. Sucks to be put in this situation but we've made the best of it and exceeded even our own expectations.

"Don't know exactly what the future holds BUT the music of Pentagram is much larger than the individuals. Just look at the list of people that have been involved!!! Not only have I had the opportunity to be a part, I’m also one of the biggest fans. I mean, I truly never get burned out on these songs, from Forever My Queen to The Ghoul to City Romance to the last note on Curious Volume. I love them all…

"The "Bobby IS Pentagram" argument baffles me. There is and has always been a great team behind him pushing forward. Sorry to disappoint everyone who thinks Bobby steers the ship... I've been fortunate to be the constant for the last 8 years and involved since 1993. There still is an inner drive to move forward and bring the music to whoever will listen. I would love to have Bobby at the front of the stage more than you know, but by his own actions/mistakes, he's removed himself. I've been to see him and keep in regular contact with him and he seems to understand that he "messed up". Now, he's got some time to work out his demons and try to make things right.

"What’s next for us? I look to keep moving forward…Thanks for reading and THANKS for your support.

Bobby Liebling Reportedly Arrested

Pentagram has issued a statement about heading out on tour without Bobby Liebling, which can be read below.

Although it wasn't mentioned in the statement, it appears Liebling was arrested last month for assault and "physical abuse of a vulnerable adult" according to court records.

The records site is currently crashing due to high traffic, but a screenshot can be seen below. Pentagram posted this message online about the situation:

"As was the case for the recently completed US shows, vocalist Bobby Liebling will not appear with Pentagram for previously booked European dates this summer.

"To elaborate, Bobby called on April 17 saying he had been admitted to the hospital. He called again on April 19, this time after being transferred to a Maryland detention facility. He's now awaiting a preliminary hearing at which time it will be determined if a follow-up on any alleged charges are necessary. An update will be published when information is available. The band will be fulfilling all currently booked appearances with 36-year mainstay guitarist Victor Griffin performing all vocals.

"A personal note from the band: the outpouring of support on our recent US dates was outstanding! Your energy was matched ten-fold and encouraged us to carry on and deliver what many have called, even by skeptics, some of the best Pentagram performances they've seen. Thank you!

"We have the best fans in the world and if not for you, the legacy of this band would have died long ago. We won't let you down now. The music lives on and as we move forward, we reiterate the lyrics of Curious Volume: 'In this venture death waits in the shadows, but in survival the volume won't die!'

"Sincerely, Victor, Greg, & Pete." More...

Pentagram Releases First Music Video

45 years into its career, Pentagram is ecstatic to announce a first ever promotional video for the title track from latest album "Curious Volume" - check it out below.

The video for "Curious Volume" was produced by David Hall, known for his work with The Melvins, Pig Destroyer, Phillip H. Anselmo and the Illegals, Venom, Brutal Truth, Ken Mode and more, with the live footage shot on tour March - April 2016 by Jerry Moore, Chris Navarro, Joe Shuerger and Dan Lively.

Pentagram frontman Bobby Liebling said of the video: "We wanted our first ever video to, in-a-way, be a connection to the past as well as the present. The song can be interpreted as a personal and collective journey that we've been on for close to half a decade. It's a trip that's both physical and mental and I feel that Dave's end result illustrates that for us and everyone. The video stands as both an escape and an introduction to us as artists and people. You can feel the rigors and rewards of tour life through the visuals. We love the stardust and psychedelics as well as the raw rock-n-roll energy felt throughout the song and video alike. We hope you connect with it like we do." More...

Pentagram Comments On Problems Entering Canada

Canadian fans hoping to see Pentagram during this upcoming tour cycle are in for a disappointment, with the band commenting:

"Pentagram deeply regret the current inability to enter Canada, a country we have all longed to play for over the band’s near 45 year existence. With hired legal counsel we attempted to connect the many dots that would legally allow a certain member(s) in the country.

"We strongly believed we had a fair chance at clearing immigration. This proved to not be the case as costs piled up along with the elusive and exhaustive required elements / proof and paperwork and an untried recent charge. The prospect of clearing immigration versus the probability of rejection at the border and all the expenses that go with that grew too great.

"The band was forced to make an educated judgement call. With the chance of entry slim, the band felt it best to cease continuing to put promoters, agents and fans on hold and keep up any false hope. This by no means should reflect on The Agency Group or promoters in Toronto, Alberta or Montreal who all tried their best to assist the band in this unfortunate dilemma.

"As the band prepares for the touring cycle of 'Curious Volume,' the new album out on August 28th, we also will continue to work on Canadian entry. Thanks are in order for all who have believe in and assisted us with against these great odds. With apologies, and a glimmer of hope, Pentagram." More...
