Autopsy Reveals New Album Details

Autopsy will release their new album, "Ashes, Organs, Blood & Crypts," via Peaceville Records on October 27. In anticipation of the record, the band has released a trailer, which can be seen below.

One of the longest running death metal acts active today, and an inspiration for whole generations of depraved metal maniacs the world over, Autopsy formed in 1987 in San Francisco (with drummer/vocalist Chris Reifert originally being a part of the genre-defining Floridan act, Death), and released four albums on Peaceville Records - beginning with the classic debut "Severed Survival" in 1989 - before disbanding in 1995, with members going on to form the equally disturbed Abscess.

Autopsy officially returned after a fifteen year hiatus with the 2010 EP, "The Tomb Within," followed closely by fifth studio album, "Macabre Eternal" in 2011, which set them on a new bloodthirsty trail, with the reinvigorated intent of creating more of the sickest and most twisted and uncompromising music ever to grace a turntable, and the band has remained prolific ever since.

Hot on the heels of 2022’s universally lauded opus, "Morbidity Triumphant," which was also the first release to feature new bassist Greg Wilkinson (also currently joined by Chris in death doom duo Static Abyss), the US death metal greats now return for a new sermon of sickness, with "Ashes, Organs, Blood & Crypts"; brutal bouts of riffery marked by the feral attack of the undisputed master poet of everything macabre, Chris Reifert.

Eleven tracks of pure audial attack, punctuated by frenzied soloing courtesy of guitar maestros Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles amid classic all-out death metal fury going straight for the jugular, interspersed with brooding doom-styled descents into delirium.

"Ashes, Organs, Blood & Crypts" was recorded at Sharkbite Studios by Scott Evans and Greg Wilkinson, with additional tracking and mixing carried out at Earhammer studios by Greg Wilkinson. Mastering work was once more carried out at Ken Lee mastering.

Carrying on with recent tradition, the cover artwork was created by the suitably morbid mind of Wes Benscoter (Bloodbath/Slayer). More...

Autopsy To Release New Album In September

Since first bursting onto the death metal scene with the now genre classic "Severed Survival" back in 1989 and following up with the equally revered "Mental Funeral" album, the influential US quartet has carved an unwavering legacy over three decades as masters and purveyors of the vile sides of the extreme metal spectrum. And now, Autopsy marks its reinvigorated return, presenting the first new full-length studio opus since 2014’s "Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves" with "Morbidity Triumphant;" a savage offering of brutal death, showing the US legends still have an unbridled hunger for the sadistic, never reluctant to step beyond the threshold of decency.

"Morbidity Triumphant," the band’s eighth album, is truly a dark delight for seasoned and new listeners alike, with a raw organic sound perfectly encapsulating what makes Autopsy so distinguishable among its peers, for what could easily be considered one of its strongest offerings to date.

The driving force of Autopsy as ever is the virtuoso guitar pairing of Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles, effortlessly trading off their schizophrenic leads and switching from all-out death metal madness to groove-laden heavy doom, with unmistakable drum/vocal legend Chris Reifert being master of proceedings, spewing his own infinitely creative maniacal musings. ‘Morbidity Triumphant’ also notably marks the first album to feature new bassist Greg Wilkinson, currently also seen in Static Abyss along with Chris “working with Greg on the Autopsy record was totally different than the Static Abyss one, mostly since Autopsy is a complete band with their own pre-established ways of doing things - we just abducted him into the band and had him roll with our ways, which he took to like a fish to gasoline so much so that he contributed a song musically which fit in perfectly with the rest of the sickening anthems on the album.”

‘Morbidity Triumphant’ was recorded at Opus Studios, with long-associated engineer Adam Munoz at the helm. Mastering was completed by Ken Lee.

The cover artwork appears courtesy of Wes Benscoter (Slayer, Bloodbath), with a new work of twisted and sinister genius. Chris exclaims "Wes delivered another stunner. What a maniac!" he explains "We didn’t give him much to work with as usual. I think, maybe, just a couple of song titles and themes maybe and his imagination did most of the work. The album title came along after the fact. After having our minds blown by Wes’ art we arrived at “Morbidity Triumphant” which seemed to fit the theme of the painting as well as the way we feel about the state of the band in general. We’ve been working hard at our sick craft with zero compromise and it seems we’re still hitting our stride somehow."

Turn out the lights, crank it up until your speakers puke and see where it takes you. You might be surprised at the thoughts and visions that enter your head. Get the ticket, take the ride and be prepared for your mind to eat itself alive.

"Morbidity Triumphant" will be released on 30th September through Peaceville Records on the following formats – CD / black vinyl LP / ltd edition violet coloured LP – exclusive to the Peaceville label stores / other colours available in various territories / cassette / digital.

"Morbidity Triumphant" tracklisting:

1. Stab The Brain
2. Final Frost
3. The Voracious One
4. Born In Blood
5. Flesh Strewn Temple
6. Tapestry Of Scars
7. Knife Slice, Axe Chop
8. Skin By Skin
9. Maggots In The Mirror

Unearthing the Metal Underground: Static Abyss

For this weekly column, I typically like to dig into the underground for either undiscovered, new talent or bands that have been around but have remained under the radar in spite of their high-caliber music. Once in a while, however, I’ll spotlight familiar underground faces who have congealed into formidable new entities. Case in point: A couple of members of the pioneering death metal beast Autopsy have banded together to create Static Abyss, a paradoxically primal and majestic expression of death/doom metal. Peaceville Records will release their debut album, “Labyrinth of Veins,” tomorrow on multiple formats. More...

1985-1995: The Golden Age of Death Metal

Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.

Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...

Housecore Horror Film Festival 2015 Day Three

Day Three of Phil Anselmo’s Housecore Horror Film Festival in San Antonio, Texas started like day two at the Holiday Inn where the film portion of the festival took place. Just like the last two years, I made sure to watch at least one film. It’s difficult to take in a film as there are so many great bands to catch, but having to be over at the hotel for interviews, I figured get there early and catch a film, so I checked the schedule and saw that a showing of Gwar’s home video “Skulhedface” was playing. Don Drakulich, aka Sleazy P. Martini, provided commentary.

Short (the heals he wears as Sleazy really boast his height, not to mention his ten-pound hair piece) and wearing glasses and short brown hair, Drakulich started the film off with a slide show presentation where he talked about how he created many of Gwar’s costumes with the help of other members. In fact, most of the celebrities were his creations. He detailed how most of the characters/props were made with silicon. He also told how the story of how Sleazy P. Martini, Gwar’s “fucking manager,” came to life. There were two Sleazys before him known as Sluggo P. Martini that didn’t work out. Tony Clifton and Jersey cops with disco hair were the inspiration for this character. He lent commentary on “Skulhedface,” a hilarious film based on the music of “This Toilet Earth,” that also starred Jello Biafra and Sabastian Bach. Drakulich left after the presentation and returned in full costume for fans to get autographs and pictures. More...
