As a kid, Fieldy spent much of his adolescence "standing around in dirt fields, drinking beer, watching other kids fight." At some point, Fieldy and some friends decided their time would be better spent taking out their frustrations on musical instruments instead. And rock music would never be the same.

So Fieldy, James "Munky" Shaffer, David Silveria, Brian "Head" Wetch, and eventually, an assistant coroner with a troubled past named Jonathan Davis left Bakersfield for Los Angeles and collectively became known as Korn. It helped that they all had common influneces - the angry, urban stylings of hip-hip, the heavy, riff-driven angst of metal. But the sounds emanating from this band's Huntington Beach rehearsal space would soon set an entirely fresh musical precedent and set off a wave of imitators that eventually threatened to engulf the band itself.

After touring for nearly two years, Korn was signed by Immortal and released their now-classic eponymous 1994 debut. Korn opened with the prophetic, gravel-throated challenge "Are you ready?!" before kicking into the heaviest guitar sound yet heard in rock, thanks to the team of Shaffer and Welch, who tuned their already-low 7-string guitars even lower and played with no regard for the traditional harmonic consonance. The sound was metallica sludge, but tempered oddly by bassist Fieldy and drummer Silveria, who added a mix of porn-soundtrack funk and hip-hop rhythms tha was puzzlingly aggressive and chill. Next, nursery rhyme-like melodies were woven into the dark mix, helping make Korn the creepiest, heaviest debut since Black Sabbath. But Davis had no desire to sing about devils and witches; he was busy exorcising real-life demons. Songs such as "Faget" and "Shoots and Ladders" were discomfortingly personal confessions of shattered childhood, and by album's end Davis was literally in tears in the harrowing "Daddy."

And so they began to amass a following that would send their next album, 1996's brutal yet cheekily titled "Life is Peachy," into platinum sales. Years of touring followed again as the band fortified its fan-base to the degree that their next album, 1998's "Follow the Leader," would debut at No. 1 on the Billboard's Top 200, as would "Issues."

Korn Premiere New 'Diablo IV'-Inspired Single

Korn have surprise-released a new track titled “Reward The Scars,” created in collaboration with the upcoming “Lord Of Hatred” expansion for the 2023 action RPG “Diablo IV,” which is due out April 28th. The song marks the pioneering nü-metal band’s first new material in roughly five years and was written specifically with the game in mind.

For the track, the band reunited with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Deftones, Evanescence), who previously worked with them on their 2019 album “The Nothing.” Frontman Jonathan Davis—long known to be an avid gamer—hasn’t confirmed his personal connection to the Diablo series, but the collaboration fits naturally given his interests.

The release also comes just days before Korn’s return to the stage. Their first show since last October is set for this Saturday, April 25th, as part of the returning “Sick New World” festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their current live schedule is as follows: More...

Korn Officially Premiere New B-Side Track

Korn’s seventh studio album, See You On The Other Side, is nearing its 20th anniversary, having first arrived on December 06, 2005. To mark the occasion, the band have rolled out a new expanded reissue on both vinyl and digital formats. As part of this edition, the former b-side “Last Legal Drug (Le Petit Mort)” has been made officially available for streaming for the first time.

See You On The Other Side closed the door on several eras for the nü-metal giants. It was Korn’s first full-length without guitarist Brian “Head” Welch, who exited to confront addiction and pursue his faith, and also the last album to feature drummer David Silveria. The record additionally marked their transition from Epic/Immortal to Virgin Records.

Despite a mixed critical response, the album became a commercial success—certified gold just one month after its release, and achieving platinum status by March 2006 for a band navigating major change.

Just For Fun

I Went Back In Time & Covered The Wrong Woodstock

It's a question everyone gets asked. "If you could go back in time and see anyone, who would it be?" Well, being a metal site, we were eager to be at the event that inspired countless bands, stories and legends, Woodstock! So when a bearded, funny but antitheist man appeared outside the Metal Underground office with an offer to take one of us back in time to rock, I had no hesitation about pushing other staff members out of the way to witness some true icons, screaming "Woodstock!" Little did I know however, just how limited the fuel was and so, clad in tie dye, a bandana and with fifty sheets of acid sewn into my denim jacket, I was somewhat taken aback when instead of hearing the dulcet tones of Richie Havens, I was confronted by The Offspring with plastic baseball bats.

Realising that something was very wrong, I backed into another tent where two rapping clowns, confused by the workings of magnets, kicked beach balls with $100 bills stuck to them into the crowd. Still thinking it was the late sixties, I was bowled over by the giving away of such a large sum of money and figured that with a hundred bucks, I could eat like a king at the hot dog stand and sure enough, after having my head stamped into the ground by men with names like Kush Kronik, I was able to spot a note the face painted muggers missed. My head spinning, I made my way to enjoy an assortment of animal parts in a bun, only to find my plan had backfired spectacularly. My eyes stinging from the array of advertising boards, I handed over the $100 to the vendor and was perplexed when only $95 was handed back. More...
